Welcome to Asparagus Day!

Asparagus, from the genus family Asparagaceae, is made up of more than 200 species. The most common and economically important is garden asparagus, which is cultivated to be eaten, and is celebrated today! It is usually green with a purple-tinged top, but white asparagus is another common variety and is often grown in Europe. In particular, in France's Argenteuil, asparagus is grown underground so that chlorophyll does not develop. This white asparagus is thick, is smoother than green types, and is known for its tenderness and delicate flavor. There is also a purple variety of asparagus called viola.

Asparagus was a delicacy of the ancient Romans and Greeks, and its name comes from the Greek word "asparagos." The name first appeared in print in English around 1000 CE. Native to the Eastern Hemisphere, it is not known exactly when it came to America; there is record of it growing in New Jersey by at least 1740. It was being grown in California by the 1850s, and 70 percent of the national crop is still grown there.

Syracuse basketball announces date, opponent for second exhibition game (PS; Waters)

Syracuse University has announced the date and opponent for the men’s basketball team’s second exhibition game ahead of the 2023-24 season.

The Orange will host the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at the JMA Wireless Dome. The school had previously announced that the SU men’s basketball squad would debut with an exhibition game on Friday, Oct. 27, against Daemen University.

The Orange will be under the guidance of new head coach Adrian Autry next season. Autry succeeds Jim Boeheim, who retired at the end of last season after a 47-year head coaching tenure.

The College of Saint Rose will also have a new coach on the sidelines. Sort of.

Brian Beury is returning to the bench after a four-year absence. Beury had coached the Golden Knights for 32 years, compiling a 643-226 record prior to his 2018 retirement.

The College of Saint Rose, a Division II program that competes in the Northeast-10 Conference, went 9-20 last season.

Syracuse is coming off a 17-15 campaign. In addition to its coaching change, the Orange has undergone a multitude of changes to its roster since the end of the 2022-23 season.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star PG hears from 3 teams the most, including SU (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball coaches appear to be prioritizing 2024 four-star point guard Mikey Lewis, who has proven one of the top all-around performers this spring across all of the shoe-sponsored AAU circuits.

The 6-foot-3 Lewis, a fast-rising prospect in the junior cycle, received a scholarship offer from the Orange coaching staff in late April. The ‘Cuse also reportedly was in attendance for him amid NCAA live periods late last month during grassroots basketball events.

Lewis has received a lot of high praise from national analysts and scouts for his play in recent weeks for the Oakland, Calif.-based Oakland Soldiers in Nike’s EYBL league.

The junior at Accelerated Prep in Lakewood, Colo., has also seen his offer sheet expand of late. Lewis, in recent interviews, has spoken highly of the Syracuse basketball program and says he wants to take a visit to the Orange at some point.

Four-star junior point guard Mikey Lewis discusses Syracuse basketball.

In a recent interview with 247Sports national analyst Brandon Jenkins, Lewis says that, lately, he is hearing the most from the ‘Cuse, Big Ten Conference member Illinois and Southeastern Conference squad LSU.

Can Carmelo Anthony's son, Kiyan, shine in his father's spotlight? (247sport.com; London)

On Monday morning, NBA superstar and Syracuse legend Carmelo Anthony announced his retirement from the NBA. In the official video, Anthony decided to make the subject of the announcement his son, Kiyan Anthony.

Thank you #STAYME7O pic.twitter.com/4au8cOd13s
— Carmelo Anthony (@carmeloanthony) May 22, 2023

"My legacy, my son, it’s in you. I will forever continue through you because the time has come for you to carry this torch," Anthony said in the video with his son looking on. "My legacy now and forever lives on through you and I will always be proud of all that you do."

Currently, the younger Anthony is a 6'5 rising junior who holds a four-star rating as the No. 62 player in the class of 2025. Up until now, Kiyan's recruitment and evaluation has been largely overshadowed (possibly on purpose) by his iconic father's career.

Despite it still being early in his development and recruitment, Anthony has made massive strides over the past months. After having more of a reserved role at for his high school team, Anthony is showcasing his ability to make plays, shoot and scoring the ball and his increased athleticism during this year's grassroots season. At this point, his grow is so evident that not even Carmelo's Hall of Fame career could hide it.

It also seems like Kiyan is now ready to step into the spotlight his father has cast on him. In February, Anthony announced that he would be transferring from the New York's famed Christ the King High School to Long Island Lutheran. Here, he will be looking to stand out at a program that is quickly becoming a national powerhouse by displaying the skillset he's honed during the spring.

TNIAAM roundtable: reflecting on Carmelo Anthony’s illustrious basketball career (TNIAAM; Staff)

Ten-time NBA All-Star, six-time All-NBA selection, and Syracuse Orange legend Carmelo Anthony on Monday announced his retirement from the NBA after 19 seasons.

Anthony served as the best player on the SU men’s basketball team in the 2002-2003 season, guiding the Orange to the program’s only NCAA championship against the Kansas Jayhawks.

He was selected third overall in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets. ‘Melo made a name for himself as a franchise cornerstone in Denver for 7.5 seasons before finishing up the prime of his career for 6.5 seasons with the New York Knicks. He currently ranks ninth all-time in points per game in NBA history - sandwiched in between legends Shaquille O’Neal and Moses Malone - after 1,260 career NBA games.

Texas group buys shuttered Syracuse country club, plans housing to meet Micron demand (PS; Moriarty)

Less than two months after Micron Technology announced plans to build a mammoth semiconductor plant in Clay, a Texas group scooped up a closed Syracuse country club for more than $3 million in hopes of cashing in on the project’s impact on Central New York’s housing market.

The Frisco, Texas, group bought the former LaFayette Hills Golf & Country Club from local real estate investor Mike Muraco on Nov. 22, according to records filed with the Onondaga County Clerk’s Office.

That was just seven weeks after Micron picked Central New York as the future home for thousands of expected computer chip-making workers.

John Christopher, the listing broker on the LaFayette Hills transaction, said the buyers are investors who acquire land around the country and then sell it after preparing the properties for redevelopment.

The group bought the 158-acre former country club along Lafayette Road after learning of Micron’s plans for the region, Christopher said. They see the hillside property as an ideal location for homes and apartments that could help meet the housing demand Micron is expected to create in Onondaga County, he said.

“They jumped right on it as soon as they heard about Micron coming here,” he said.

Already, the group of out-of-state investors is looking to cash in by getting the land ready for residential development and flipping it to a developer or builder. They have listed the site for sale, with a heavy focus on Micron’s expected impact on demand for housing.

“MICRON COMING TO CENTRAL NEW YORK !!! Demand for housing will be HUGE. Rare opportunity to purchase one of the largest tracts of land in Onondaga County,” a listing on LoopNet states.

Are you an asparagine smeller? Asparagine is an amino acid found in asparagus. It passes through the system and comes out in the urine with a distinctive smell. If you have the genetic capability to smell it, you will understand this. If you are not genetically capable of smelling asparagine, this will make no sense.
