Welcome to Heimlich Maneuver Day!
Dr. Henry Heimlich came up with the Heimlich Maneuver in 1974. Also known as abdominal thrusts, this procedure is used to dislodge food and objects from the throat of a choking person. As the American Red Cross claims over 3,000 deaths are caused by choking each year, celebrating Heimlich Maneuver Day is an important way to raise awareness and help save lives. The origin of the day is unknown.

Mintz withdraws from NBA draft, will return to SU for sophomore season (PS; Waters)
Syracuse point guard Judah Mintz is going to run it back with the Orange.
Mintz, who started every game for Syracuse as a freshman last season, has withdrawn his name from the NBA draft ahead. The move allows him to return to Syracuse for his sophomore year. The NCAA’s deadline for underclassmen to remove their names from NBA draft consideration and retain their eligibility is May 31.
Mintz announced his decision to return through Syracuse University’s social media account along with a video.
Mintz had entered his name in the NBA draft following a stellar rookie season at Syracuse. He participated in the NBA’s pre-draft combine in Chicago on May 15-19.
The dynamic guard averaged 16.3 points per game to lead all ACC freshmen. He also led the conference’s freshmen with 4.6 assists per game. His 1.8 steals led the entire ACC.
Mintz’s return is a huge boost for the Orange, which went 17-15 last season but lost senior starters Joe Girard and Jesse Edwards to the transfer portal. Girard transferred to Clemson, while Edwards bolted for West Virginia.

Axe: Mintz made the right call coming back to Syracuse (PS; $; Axe)
The four words every Syracuse basketball fan wanted to hear: Judah Mintz is back.
Mintz tested the NBA draft waters and found them too chilly for his liking, so he’ll return to be the face of Syracuse basketball for the 2023-24 season.
That’s stimulating news for program in transition under new head coach Adrian Autry.
Mintz is the sure thing on a team that, on paper, excites with its potential but also is clouded in mystery with many new faces to acclimate.
Mintz averaged 16.3 points per game last season, leading all ACC freshmen. He also led the conference’s freshmen with 4.6 assists per game. His 1.8 steals led the ACC.
On their own, those are ACC rookie of the year numbers had it not been for a dynamic season from Duke’s Kyle Filipowski, whom Mintz finished second in voting to.
Mintz brings a flair, tenacity and excitement to the court. He’s the one your eyes gravitate to most. As the kids say these days, “he’s got that dog in him.”

Syracuse basketball received huge news on Wednesday as Judah Mintz announced he is returning for his sophomore season. This completes the Orange's roster for the 2023-24 season, which will be the first under new head coach Adrian Autry. The transfer portal has played a pivotal role in shaping this roster, both with its additions and subtractions. Here is a look at the player movement as well as the roster and potential rotation.
ADDITIONS

C Naheem McLeod (Florida State transfer)
C William Patterson (high school recruit)
G JJ Starling (Notre Dame transfer)
G Chance Westry (Auburn transfer
SUBTRACTIONS

CURRENT ROSTER

Judah Mintz
JJ Starling
Chance Westry
Forwards
Chris Bell
Maliq Brown
Quadir Copeland
Justin Taylor
Benny Williams
Centers
Peter Carey
Mounir Hima
Naheem McLeod
William Patterson
ANALYSIS
Both Justin Taylor and Quadir Copeland can play in the backcourt, but they are listed as forwards based on where they played last year. They certainly provide depth at guard as well. The starting lineup and rotation is still to be determine based on training camp, but I could see Adrian Autry playing as many as ten guys. He says he wants to play fast paced and get out in transition. Running a lot could mean more play in order to keep everyone fresh.

Forbes Announces Addition of Nichols to Coaching Staff - Wake Forest University Athletics (godeacs.com)
Wake Forest men's basketball head coach Steve Forbes announced the addition of assistant coach Demetris Nichols to the program on Wednesday (May 31).
Nichols comes to Winston-Salem after being a part of the coaching staff within the Toronto Raptors organization. Prior to his stint with the Raptors, he spent a year at his alma mater, Syracuse University, as a graduate assistant for the men's basketball program.
"Demetris Nichols brings a vast array of experience to our staff ranging from playing in the NBA to coaching in the NBA. He was an outstanding college player at Syracuse, leading the Big East in scoring his senior year.
"In 2007, Demetris was drafted in the second round by the Portland Trailblazers and played in the NBA for three years before finishing his career overseas playing in the EuroLeague. He was highly recommended by Nick Nurse, who coached Demetris in the G-League and hired him this past year as a Player Development Coach with the Toronto Raptors and as an assistant coach with the Raptor's 905 G-League team. He also served as the interim head coach of the 905 this past year as well.
"Everyone I spoke to in the NBA, the G-League, and at Syracuse raved about how much the players respect Coach Nichols and how dedicated he was to their development on and off the court. I am so excited to welcome Demetris, his wife Stacey, and their daughters Gabrielle and Sydney to our basketball family." - head coach Steve Forbes

Everything you need to know about Taste of Syracuse 2023: music, food samples, map (PS; Miller)
Before you ask, the answer is no. The Bonefish Grill and its crowd-pleasing Bang Bang Shrimp samples will NOT be at this weekend’s Taste of Syracuse festival downtown. But another local favorite will likely surpass those long lines.
The Bold Coast Lobster Co. will park its popular food truck at the corner of South Salina and Washington street, a block away from the main music stage.
“No Bonefish Grill, although they’ve been out for a few years now,” said organizer Carrie Wojtaszek. “We know that Bold Coast Lobster has been known to draw big lines at other festivals, so we have our eye on them.”
The line to buy lobster rolls from Bold Coast at the recent Food Truck Battle at the State Fairgrounds reached well over 100 people deep, almost nearing the main entrance.
The 25th annual Taste of Syracuse is 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The free food and music festival usually draws 200,000 people to Clinton Square and the surrounding blocks. National bands include Eve 6 and the Spin Doctors. More than 100 local musicians will perform in 26 acts over the two days.
This year’s Taste has nearly 150 vendors, more than last year’s event and even with pre-pandemic participation levels.
Beer and spiked seltzers will be available at all of the beer booths. Four beverage ticket booths will be spread throughout the festival. Customers purchase tickets for alcoholic drinks at those stands and redeem them at any of the beer tents
Drink tickets are normally three for $25, but a happy hour special this year reduces three tickets to $20 on Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular draft beers are 16 ounces; craft beers and seltzers are 12 ounces.
Because Franklin Street will will eventually be off-limits to the festival once the Interstate 81 construction starts, this year’s Taste of Syracuse will avoid the area altogether, expanding the event down Clinton instead of down Water Street.

Common Council to vote on ReZone Syracuse after one more public hearing (PS; Knauss)
Syracuse lawmakers are poised to vote on a new citywide zoning code they hope will help spark widespread development to revive city neighborhoods and counteract an ongoing housing crisis.
The new code, dubbed ReZone Syracuse, is intended to make zoning more consistent and predictable for developers and to diversify the kinds of housing allowed.
During a final committee meeting on ReZone Wednesday, several Common Council members expressed hopes that it would contribute to an urban resurgence in Syracuse.
“Now’s the time, right?” said Councilor Jimmy Monto. “We want people to stay in the city of Syracuse. … Let’s do it.”
Councilor Pat Hogan, who chairs the economic development committee, said developers have been “waiting and waiting’' for ReZone to be implemented.
