Welcome to Forgiveness Day!

Has someone wronged you over the past year? Did they do something so bad that it almost seemed unforgivable? Have you done something that you think you can't be forgiven for? Today is for forgiving others who have wronged you, and for being forgiven. The day is about true forgiveness—it's about an inward opening of the heart, not just an outward display. If everyone would pause and celebrate Forgiveness Day, the world would be a better place.

2024 NBA mock drafts: Where is Judah Mintz? And which other Syracuse player is generating first-round buzz? (PS; Waters)

The NBA held its 2023 draft on Thursday, and while fans are anxiously anticipating Victor Wembanyama’s pro debut, some analysts are already looking ahead to the 2024 draft.

Syracuse hasn’t had a player selected in the NBA since 2020 when Elijah Hughes was the 39th player taken. The last Syracuse player picked in the first round was Tyler Lydon in 2017.

A round-up of some early mock drafts indicates that both of those things could change in 2024.

As expected, Judah Mintz, who entered his name in this year’s draft before deciding to return to Syracuse for his sophomore year, is mentioned in several of the mock drafts. However, another Syracuse player is also generating some buzz in the ‘24 draft.

ESPN.com’s 2024 mock draft lists both Mintz and JJ Starling as likely second-round picks. Mintz averaged 16.3 points per game as a freshman last year. He also led the ACC in steals and led the conference’s freshmen in assists. The ESPN.com mock draft slots Mintz as the No. 42 selection, going to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Starling, a 6-foot-4 guard, transferred to Syracuse after spending his freshman year at Notre Dame. Starling, a Baldwinsville native, is predicated to go to the Houston Rockets with the No. 35 pick.

ESPN.com has five ACC players in its first round; three from Duke and two from Virginia. The Duke players are Kyle Filipowski (No. 10), Tyrese Proctor (No. 12) and Mark Mitchell (No. 27). The two Virginia players are Ryan Dunn (No. 21) and Reece Beekman (No. 30).

Mintz, Starling Both Projected Second-Rounders (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

The 2023 NBA Draft has come and gone, and a popular name among Syracuse fans was not selected. Over the course of this past season, Judah Mintz found himself on several Mock Drafts, the majority of which had him going in the second round. But a few weeks ago, the point guard decided to play one more year on the hill, seeking a higher positioning in the 2024 draft class. In the wake of the 2023 draft coming to a close, ESPN released a mock for next year’s class, and Mintz isn’t the only familiar name listed. The Worldwide Leader has both him and JJ Starling as second round picks come next June.

First and foremost, that gives belief that this could be the most dynamic 1-2 punch we’ve seen on the hill in a long time. Regardless of where in the draft they go, having two players projected to go from your school says a lot- ESPN gave that distinction to just seven other schools.

From Mintz’s perspective, this isn’t quite what you want to see yet. If we’re being honest with ourselves, he probably could’ve been picked in the second round the other day or, at worst, signed with a team as an undrafted free agent. That being said, he came back in part because he knows there’s plenty of work to be done. A good three-point shot is a necessity if you’re going to be a successful point guard in today’s NBA, it’s no secret that’s a work in progress. Late-game awareness also needs to see some improvement. If Mintz elevates those two aspects of his game, propelling himself into the first round is a legitimate possibility.

Mookie Jones: His SU suspension, food stamps and mentoring kids (podcast) (PS; podcast; Waters)

Mookie Jones last played for the Syracuse Orange in the 2011-12 season, but he can still be found launching his familiar jumper in the Elite Basketball League this summer in Camillus.

In the summer league, Jones goes up against opponents who are closer in age to the players he coaches at Syracuse’s OnTech High School than they are to him.

Jones recently joined the Inside Syracuse Basketball podcast to talk about his love of the game that brings him back to area courts and also helped him get through some difficult times.

Jones, once a highly regarded recruit out of Peekskill, New York, saw his college career come to an end when Syracuse officials suspended him from the university. He struggled with his circumstances, eventually having to apply for government assistance.

He reapplied to SU but was denied twice before finally being readmitted. He talked about his motivation to earn his college degree.

Jones also discussed how he uses his experiences today in dual roles as head coach and athletic director at OnTech.

It’s a very personal and revealing conversation, one that shows Jones in a light most Syracuse fans have never seen him in.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star wing with ‘Cuse in top 7 heads to Georgetown (itlh; Adler)

Another Syracuse basketball recruiting target is heading to long-time rival Georgetown.

On Sunday, 2024 four-star wing Caleb Williams from Washington, D.C., said via Twitter that he has verbally committed to the Hoyas and its new head coach, former Providence boss Ed Cooley.

Since replacing Patrick Ewing as the Georgetown head coach in March, Cooley has done a lot of positive things on the recruiting trail. Besides landing the 6-foot-7 Williams, for example, in mid-May, the Hoyas picked up a verbal commitment from 2024 four-star center Thomas Sorber from Philadelphia.

— Caleb Williams (@calebwill1ams) June 25, 2023

Sorber, like Williams, held a scholarship offer from the Orange. Williams chose Big East Conference member Georgetown over other finalists Syracuse basketball, Villanova, Michigan, Indiana, Virginia and Miami. The top-100 national prospect had officially visited Michigan, Indiana, Villanova, and Georgetown.

Syracuse basketball has missed out on 2024 four-star wing Caleb Williams.

The ‘Cuse coaching staff offered a scholarship to Williams in late April. He is a standout rising senior at the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.

In grassroots basketball, Williams competes for the 17U squad of the D.C.-based Team Takeover in Nike’s EYBL league, which is one of the favorites to win the prestigious Peach Jam tournament early next month.

Syracuse Loses out on Four-Star 2024 DMV Recruit (orangefizz.net; Gotkin)

One of Syracuse’s top targets in the 2024 recruiting class has made his decision. Caleb Williams, the 6’7 Power Forward, committed to Georgetown earlier today. Instead of following fellow Washingtonian Donnie Freeman to the 315, the four-star will travel less than three miles from his high school to his new home with the Hoyas.

While one player not committing to the Orange isn’t a reason to sound the alarms, Williams’s decision does stand out for one big reason. It shows that Georgetown is once again a true player when it comes to DMV recruiting. The DMV is a hotbed for college basketball talent and one that Adrien Autry has recruited heavily so far.

The two powerhouse DMV programs, Maryland and Georgetown have both struggled in the recent stretch of years. However, both seem to be roaring back. Under Kevin Willard, the Terps amassed the 21st best 2023 recruiting class, consisting of all players originally from the DMV.

Under new Head Coach Ed Cooley, the Hoyas are hoping for a similar revitalization and are off to a good start. The last time the Hoyas brought in a four-star from the DC area was in 2017. If Georgetown becomes a competitive program again, and Maryland continues its rise, things will get a lot harder for Autry and co.

Budweiser Clydesdales parade through Baldwinsville (video) (PS; Trimble)

The King of Beers jingle was on a loop Friday as the massive Budweiser Clydesdale horses paraded through the village. Thousands came from all over Upstate New York to see them and all had the same look of wonder in their eyes.

As the Anheuser-Busch team hooked up the horses one by one at St. Mary’s Church, people gathered around. Then when it was time, the crowd made an opening like a corral gate. Hitch drivers Dave Thomas and Kenzie Rondeau guided the beer-laden carriage through town with Lily, the Dalmatian, panting in anticipation.

Or maybe it was the heat.

A look at some of the items on the popular restaurant's menu (Dave's Hot Chicken)

Celebrity-backed restaurant chain selling hot chicken proposes 1st Central NY location (PS; $; Doran)

A fast-growing franchise restaurant chain that specializes in Nashville hot chicken is proposing to open a location in Cicero.

Dave’s Hot Chicken, which offers chicken tenders and sliders, wants to open a restaurant at 7915 Brewerton Road (Route 11) in Cicero. The franchisee would renovate the former AT&T building in the plaza. It’s right near Jersey Mike’s and Red Wing Shoes in the plaza with Metro Mattress. KFC is across the street.

The restaurant would have seating for about 55 people.

The chain started in 2017 and has more than 100 locations, with hundreds more in the pipeline, according to its website. They opened a restaurant in Toronto in 2021, and in Dubai and Doha, Qatar in 2022.

Celebrity investors include former California First Lady Maria Shriver, Red Sox owner Tom Werner, actor Samuel L. Jackson, and Good Morning America anchor and retired NFL player Michael Strahan, according to the company.

It was founded by a group of four friends, including Dave Kopushyan, a chef who trained in Thomas Keller’s French Laundry organization. The other three founders are Arman Oganesyan, and Tommy and Gary Rubenyan.

They started in an East Hollywood parking lot with Nashville hot chicken, with each piece topped with a mix of signature spices.

Along with their chicken tenders and sliders, they offer sides of kale slaw, macaroni and cheese, french fries and a variety of milkshakes.
