In 2001, Bob Palais published π Is Wrong, where he said pi (π) should not be used for the circle constant—the geometry of a circle expressed in a single number. Instead, he called for tau (τ), which is equal to 2π, or roughly 6.28318, to be used instead. Whereas π compares a circle's circumference to its diameter, τ is defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its radius. This means the measurement of the circumference of any circle is about 6.28318 times its radius. 2π is used quite often in mathematics, and proponents of tau say it would be much easier to simply replace that symbol with τ. In general, mathematicians write equations about circles using its radius as well, not its diameter.
On June 28, 2010, Michael Hartl published the Tau Manifesto, which stood behind Palais and expanded on his ideas. Like Palais, he called for tau to replace pi, saying pi is a "confusing and unnatural choice for the circle constant." He believed tau is a better way to describe the relationship between the circumference and the radius of a circle. With the release of his manifesto, he also created Tau Day. Just as 3/14 is Pi Day, 6/28 became Tau Day. It is an anti-Pi Day of sorts, and Hartl even called for Pi Day to be known as Half Tau Day. A growing number of mathematicians and physicists agree tau should replace pi, although this is not yet widely accepted.

Syracuse basketball guard Kyle Cuffe Jr. suffers broken hand (PS; $; Waters)
Syracuse basketball player Kyle Cuffe Jr. has suffered a broken bone in his right hand and will be out of action for most of the summer.
Syracuse coach Adrian Autry confirmed Cuffe’s injury, adding that he hoped the Kansas transfer would be assume to resume basketball activities by the end of July. That would give Cuffe the opportunity to participate in the last couple of weeks of summer workouts with the rest of the SU players.
Autry did not say when or how the injury happened.
Cuffe Jr., a 6-foot-2 guard, transferred to Syracuse in May after spending the previous two years at Kansas. Cuffe is a native of New York City, who attended Blair (N.J.) Academy.
When he was in high school, Cuffe attended SU’s Elite Camp for high school players.
Cuffe took a redshirt in his first year at Kansas. He had to take a medical redshirt this past season after suffering a knee injury just two games into the 2022-23 season.
Cuffe is one of three guards that transferred to Syracuse since the end of the 2023 season along with JJ Starling of Notre Dame and Chance Westry of Auburn.

Head coach Adrian Autry confirmed the injury Tuesday and said he hopes Cuffe Jr. will return to the court at the end of July. Autry did not mention how or when the injury occurred.
Cuffe Jr., a New York City native, transferred to Syracuse in May after spending two seasons at Kansas. Coming out of high school, Cuffe was a four-star recruit before choosing the Jayhawks. Cuffe Jr. redshirted during his freshman season in Lawrence, playing just two games during the 2022-23 season before a season-ending knee injury.
After committing to Syracuse, Cuffe Jr. told syracuse.com his knee is “perfect” and wouldn’t be a problem for the upcoming season.
Syracuse hit the transfer portal hard this offseason with Cuffe Jr. becoming the fourth transfer and third guard to commit to SU. Cuffe Jr. joins a class of J.J. Starling, Chance Westry and Naheem McLeod. Cuffe Jr. adds to an already deep backcourt with Judah Mintz deciding to stay in college another season after previously declaring for the NBA draft.

Stoudamire has brought in six transfers while also having a large amount of last year's team enter the portal. This is going to be a new-look team when the season starts and Stoudamire tries to bring Georgia Tech back to winning.
So which transfers are going to be the best this season? 247Sports analyst Kevin Flaherty has Abram and Reeves as two of the ten best transfers coming into the ACC this season.
Flaherty ranked the top ten transfers in the ACC entering this season and Abram comes in at No. 5 while Reeves is No. 7.
Kowacie Reeves has a chance to be one of the most impactful transfers for Georgia Tech.
Here is what Flaherty had to say about both additions for the Yellow Jackets:
"The No. 39 transfer arrived at Ole Miss as the No. 65 recruit in the 2022 class, then averaged a solid eight points and two assists per game while starting 22 of the 33 games he played in and logging 21.0 minutes per contest. It’s not unusual to see a player take a step forward as a shooter in his second college season, and Abram already made a solid 36.4% of his 3-point attempts on more than six outside shots per 40 minutes. That kind of shooting could come in handy for first-year Georgia Tech coach Damon Stoudamire, who knows a thing or two about the importance of making shots from deep.
Reeves arrived at Florida with a sterling reputation as a wing shooter enforced by his recruiting ranking as the No. 31 player in the 2021 class. And while that didn’t play out at Florida, with Reeves making 2.5 3-pointers per 40 minutes but only shooting 29.2% from deep over his two seasons, that’s what Georgia Tech will hope Reeves is able to tap into. The No. 45 overall player in the transfer portal, Reeves has 17 starts over the last two years and set career highs in points (8.5 per game) and rebounds (2.6 per game) last year. More bear sightings in Upstate NY town, residents encouraged to put away bird feeders (PS; Hernandez)
A bear is making one Central New York area a regular picnic site.
According to News Channel 2 WKTV, a small black bear has been seen twice in the past two weeks in the town of Ilion.
The first sighting happened in the parking lot of the Barringer Road School and then a bear appeared again in the yard of a local resident. Neither time did the bear appear to be a threat to others.
The hungry bear was photographed this week on its hind legs trying to grab a snack from someone’s bird feeder.
The Ilion PD asks residents who spot the bear to not approach it and instead contact authorities at 315-894-9911.
Last month a large black bear was spotted in the neighboring town of East Herkimer, foraging for some easy food from a resident’s chicken coop.
In both foraging incidents, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was consulted and residents were told to remove food sources, such as bird feeders.
Here are the NYS DEC’s tips for clearing outdoor food sources that could attract bears:

No swimming at Oneida Shores beach until further notice due to high levels of E. coli bacteria (PS; Dowty)
Swimming will be banned at Oneida Shores county park in Cicero until further notice due to high levels of E. coli bacteria in Oneida Lake.
Onondaga County announced the closure Tuesday afternoon, adding that the water would be tested daily until the bacteria returned to acceptable levels.
Most E. coli is harmless or only causes brief diarrhea, the county said in a news release. However, the presence of E. coli signals a high level of bacteria in general. Anyone with concerns about symptoms after swimming at Oneida Shores should contact his or her health provider.
The rest of the county park will remain open as usual. More information on the beach’s water quality can be found on the county’s health website.
