Welcome to National Meteor Day!

Heads raise upwards and eyes scan the sky, keeping watch for meteors, for it is National Meteor Day, also commonly known as National Meteor Watch Day. Meteors, sometimes called shooting or falling stars, glow brightly as they fall through the Earth's atmosphere. They start out as meteoroids, a small piece of space dust made of rock or metal, which may be as small as a particle or as large as a rock, and which has broken off from an asteroid or planet. Meteoroids come up against air particles, which creates friction. They then heat up and burn to the point of vaporization. The glow they produce is the hot air that remains as they burn.

What’s the ceiling and the floor for Syracuse’s starters and the Orange? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

The college basketball season may be more than four months away, but it’s never too early to start making some predictions.

That’s what one reader asked me to do in this week’s Mailbox, but in a form that offers some much-needed leeway.

Not fearing any prediction that might come back to haunt me, I took on the challenge.

We’ve got that plus a lot more, so let’s get to those questions.

Q: What are your ceiling and floor predictions for Syracuse’s starting five and for the team in general?

Caleb

Mike:
This is an interesting exercise. It’s a prediction with a little wiggle room. What would be the sky-high expectations for some of Syracuse’s players individually and the team as a whole? Conversely, is there a reasonable level of lowest results?

First, there is the matter of a starting five. Obviously, SU coach Adrian Autry and his staff will take the summer and early fall to evaluate their players before determining the starters, but I’ll go out on a limb, pick five guys and then go from there.

Judah Mintz: I think Mintz’s ceiling is very high. He could improve his shooting numbers, score a little more than his 16.3 points per game average as a freshman, become a ball-hawking defensive force as SU goes man-to-man and potentially vie with Duke’s Kyle Filipowski and North Carolina’s Armando Bacot for the ACC’s Player of the Year award.

The floor? I don’t think Mintz’s production drops below his freshman year numbers. Perhaps his scoring average dips as Syracuse gets more offense from JJ Starling, Chris Bell and Benny Williams.

Speaking of whom:

JJ Starling: Starling averaged roughly 11 points per game as a freshman at Notre Dame despite shoulder and knee injuries. I’m predicting a break-out year with a scoring average in the 15-16 points per game range.

Syracuse Basketball: Change is good for the Orange this coming season (itlh; Nutting)

The Syracuse basketball team these past few seasons has not been the same team we have been used to seeing.

Under the direction of head coach Jim Boeheim, the Orange has missed the NCAA Tournament these past two seasons, playing lackluster basketball and losing games that they should have never lost. This would force Syracuse to make a change.

Now under the direction of new head coach Adrian Autry, can this team see a new future?

Change is good for Syracuse basketball.

Making Adjustments

Syracuse basketball has already made moves this off-season in the transfer portal, picking up guys such as guard J.J. Starling from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and guard/wing Chance Westry from the Auburn Tigers. This shows that the new Orange head coach is effectively rebuilding this team, even after Syracuse basketball lost two key pieces in shooting guard Joe Girard III to the Clemson Tigers and center Jesse Edwards to the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Syracuse basketball is slowly looking to get better and with point guard Judah Mintz coming back after backing out of the NBA Draft this year, this Orange team might be looking to make a run for the tournament this year.

Defensive Changes

As Syracuse basketball fans have always remembered, the 2-3 zone defense has been the staple for years, as this defense was one of the many factors that would help Jim Boeheim and the Syracuse Orange win the 2003 NCAA National Championship.

Former Syracuse basketball player Elijah Hughes joins Orlando Magic’s summer league team (PS; Waters)

Eljah Hughes, the former Syrause basketball star, has signed to play for the Orlando Magic in the NBA’s 2K24 Summer League in Las Vegas.

Hughes played at Syracuse from 2018 to 2020 after transferring to SU from East Carolina. He was the 39th player picked in the NBA’s 2020 draft, selected originally by the New Orleans Pelicans, but then traded to the Utah Jazz.

Hughes appeared in 18 games with Utah in the 2020-21 season. The Jazz traded him to Portland midway through the 2021-22 season. He played in a total of 26 games that season.

Last year, Hughes played with the Wisconsin Herd, the G-League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Orlando will open play in the Las Vegas Summer League on Saturday, July 8th, against the Detroit Pistons. That game will serve as a Syracuse reunion for Hughes and his former Orange teammate Buddy Boeheim.

Boeheim spent last year on a two-way contract with Detroit, allowing him to play for both the Pistons and Detroit’s G-League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise.

Syracuse basketball: ACC-SEC Challenge roundtable (TNIAAM; Staff)

Now that we know who the Syracuse Orange will face in the inaugural ACC-SEC Challenge, let’s find out what our staff thinks about the match-ups.

What are your initial thoughts about the Syracuse men facing the LSU Tigers?

Kevin:
No Paul Skene for the Tigers right? Good. Honestly both teams are looking to rebound and LSU brought in a number of transfers so I think it’s a good challenge for the Orange coming off their Maui trip. It’s weird, but before we get to December we’ll have a good idea of what this Syracuse season’s post-season hopes will look like.

Dom: Regardless of how good LSU is, playing the Tigers as part of the non-conference schedule could still provide value. After falling by 29 points in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge last year, Syracuse rattled off five straight wins and won nine of their next 11. Was it the the most difficult schedule in the world? No, but this is a competitive matchup that Syracuse should be comfortable playing against.

Mike: It’s another OOC home game, which they desperately needed to counter trips to Maui, South Dakota, and D.C. (Yes, that is the oddest combination of road games I can think of.) It might not be the “resume builder” that some other SEC foes could have been but it’s a chance for a new head coach to get his team comfortable early in the season.

What are your initial thoughts about the Syracuse women facing the Alabama Crimson Tide?

Kevin:
Hosting a game against a NCAA Tournament team is a great opportunity for the Orange to land a resume-building win. Expectations are raised after last season and Syracuse needs to capitalize while they have Dyashia Fair on the roster.

Dom: Felisha Legette-Jack and company are eyeing the NCAA Tournament prize with Fair and most of the core players back in the fold. Syracuse’s resume showed promise but lacked consistency. A home game versus Alabama (20-11, 9-7) provides an early resume builder and a tough matchup heading into the brutal winter.

The JMA Wireless Dome is barley visible in the distance as wildfire smoke from Canada once again blankets Central New York. This photograph was taken from Upstate Community Hospital, in Syracuse. N. Scott Trimble

Even a change in the winds won’t clear wildfire smoke from Upstate NY skies yet (PS; $; Coin)

Smoke from Canada wildfires that is making the air unhealthy to breathe in Upstate New York is likely to hang around another day or two.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an air quality alert for Friday, the third day in a row. Air quality will be similar to today’s, the state said, with smoke thick enough to reach the “unhealthy” stage in Western and Central New York.

Meteorologists had hoped earlier today that a projected shift in the winds, from the west to the south, would push the smoke out and clear the skies. But the latest forecasts shows that while the winds will shift, they’ll just drag in a new batch of smoke that had previously drifted down to the mid-Atlantic states.

“Winds will become light and variable this evening, eventually shifting to the south tomorrow, which will likely just recirculate smoke over the Mid-Atlantic back up over the area again tomorrow,” the National Weather Service said.

That’s essentially what happened Wednesday and today, when winds from the west and northwest recirculated smoke that had descended from Canada into the Midwest. On Tuesday, Chicago and Detroit had the worst air quality of any major city in the world.

The DEC projects that the air quality index, a composite number of several pollutants, will reach 160 tomorrow. Those levels are considered unhealthy, and everyone is encouraged to stay indoors as much as possible.
