July 17 was chosen for the date of the holiday because the ? calendar emoji has that date on it. The calendar has July 17 on it because it was on that date in 2002 that iCal for Mac was announced. World Emoji Day was created in 2014 by Jeremy Burge, the founder of Emojipedia, a site that keeps track of all emojis and their definitions.

Yes, Syracuse-Georgetown Still Matters. A Lot. (orangefizz.net; Griffin)
Even though it’s been a decade since Syracuse bolted the Big East for the ACC, there shouldn’t be any doubt that SU vs. Georgetown is still a marquee matchup. When “it’s *insert time* and Georgetown still sucks” is still a very common adage among the Orange faithful, what more proof do you need? The 99th installment of the rivalry was confirmed earlier this week, and it would be a major disappointment if games number 100 and beyond weren’t scheduled.
Ever since the conference move, the word “rivalry” hasn’t exactly been synonymous with SU. With the exception of Pittsburgh and maybe Boston College, there just isn’t a ton of animosity between the Orange and various ACC schools. The hatred Syracuse fans feel toward the big dogs in the ACC is not mutual. That was, is, and always will be the case when it comes to Georgetown. Hoya fans look forward to this showdown just as much as Orange fans. It’s the only true rivalry SU has, killing it would be an awful look for both sides.
The rivalry certainly had more juice when the two schools were in the Big East, but there have been plenty of captivating moments since Syracuse left. Before this past December’s clash in Central New York, each of the previous seven installments had been decided by 10 points or fewer. An overtime victory in DC in 2017 (that team went to the Sweet 16), Tyus Battle’s game-winner, and Marek Dolezaj losing a tooth are some moments that come to mind. Why would you want to stop facing Georgetown when memories like this come from this matchup?
Finally, new blood being injected into the rivalry could really reinvigorate it. On the SU side, there’s a new head coach in Adrian Autry along with Central New York native JJ Starling getting a taste of the animosity after spending his first collegiate season at Notre Dame. As for the Hoyas, a name that should be familiar to Syracuse fans has taken over for Patrick Ewing as head coach- Ed Cooley. He coached at Providence for 12 seasons, including SU’s last two in the Big East. The Orange beat the Friars in all four games with Cooley at the helm, but in his tenure, Providence became a perennial Big East contender. Fresh faces should make these matchups more intriguing on a local and national scale.

Syracuse Basketball: Allen Griffin high on transfer center Naheem McLeod (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball assistant coach Allen Griffin is bullish on the potential of Philadelphia native Naheem McLeod, who transferred to the Orange this off-season from fellow Atlantic Coast Conference squad Florida State.
The 7-foot-4, 255-pound McLeod, who will be a junior in the upcoming 2023-24 campaign, officially signed with the ‘Cuse in May, according to SU Athletics. A season ago for a sub-par Seminoles group, McLeod appeared in 28 games, starting 11 of them.
In 2022-23, he averaged 13.1 minutes, 3.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per encounter, while connecting on 54.7 percent from the field. Notably, last February, when Syracuse basketball beat FSU on the road, 76-67, McLeod collected a season-high 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, to go along with eight rebounds, two blocks and one assist, in 26 minutes off of the bench.
This coming term, McLeod is expected to start at center for the Orange, and he has some big shoes to fill in replacing Jesse Edwards, an All-ACC performer last year as a senior who transferred to West Virginia.
McLeod is one of four centers on the Syracuse basketball 2023-24 roster, and none of them have the experience that Edwards possesses. Still, in a recent radio interview, Allen Griffin had some positive things to say about Naheem McLeod.

A few days ago, Griffin, who works with the ‘Cuse big men, caught up with the fabulous Steve Infanti and Paulie Scibilia on their ESPN Radio Syracuse program, “Orange Nation.”
For a little context, college basketball insider Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports recently published his off-season breakdown of the Atlantic Coast Conference, where he discussed his projected order of finish in the league in 2023-24, as well as handed out some superlatives, including a list of 10 ACC breakout players.

Syracuse basketball has big-time new competition for 4-star, 5-star recruits (itlh; Adler)
In recent weeks, Syracuse basketball four-star and five-star targets in the 2024, 2025 and 2026 classes have landed a bunch of new scholarship offers from a range of high-major programs.
In the 2024 cycle, where the Orange already has two four-star verbal commitments, the ‘Cuse continues to pursue a pair of other highly rated guards in this class. At this juncture, I’m aware of 11 scholarship offers doled out by Syracuse basketball coaches to prospects in the 2025 class.
And in the 2026 cycle, I’ve seen two offers made by the Orange at this point in time. If we’re talking about the 2025 class, on June 15, college coaches could start initiating direct communication with players in this cycle, and Syracuse basketball 2025 recruits have seen a lot of offers come in since that time.
Below, I’m listing various offers that I’ve seen out in the public space given to ‘Cuse targets in these three classes, according to recruiting services such as Verbal Commits, 247Sports and , along with prospects’ own Twitter pages.
This list isn’t meant to be fully exhaustive, as these targets could have secured other offers for which I’m not aware. Additionally, the offers noted below have come more recently, and all of these Syracuse basketball targets have additional earlier offers that I’ve likely noted in separate stories about these recruits.
Let’s review how the competition has grown for Syracuse basketball as it relates to targets in several cycles.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Kiyan Anthony, 5-star recruits ball out in AAU (itlh; Adler)
In recent days, various Syracuse basketball recruiting targets, including Kiyan Anthony, have put forth some impressive performances at AAU events in Las Vegas and elsewhere.
I haven’t come across a lot of full box scores from these various showcases, however, social media posts and media reports from recruiting experts have provided a bit of insight into how these Orange recruits have fared.
Among the AAU events that have transpired lately are the Las Vegas Big Time, the Sportradar Showdown in Henderson, Nev., the Ultimate Club Championship in Las Vegas, the DMV Summer Finale in District Heights, Md., and the Hoop Group Summer Finale in Manheim Pa., among others.
Some of the ‘Cuse targets playing in these events, at least as far as I can tell, have included Anthony, a 2025 four-star shooting guard, 2024 five-star guard Jalil Bethea, 2025 five-star point guard Tyler Jackson, 2026 five-star shooting guard Jordan Smith Jr. and 2025 five-star wing Joson Sanon, along with Orange 2024 commit Elijah Moore, a four-star shooting guard.

Syracuse Basketball: Boeheim’s Army has deep roster, tough draw in TBT (itlh; Adler)
We’re fewer than two weeks away from the first game for Boeheim’s Army, a collection of former Syracuse basketball players and other stars seeking to claim the 2023 The Basketball Tournament (“TBT”).
Boeheim’s Army, which won the 2021 TBT and the cool $1 million that came along with that victory, will again serve as a host team, as the Syracuse area will hold a TBT regional site from July 24 to July 28 from the Upstate Medical University Arena at the Oncenter War Memorial.
In this summer’s TBT, which features 64 teams spread across eight sites, Boeheim’s Army has received the No. 2 seed in the Syracuse regional. Per the TBT Web site, Boeheim’s Army will first suit up on Monday, July 24, beginning at 7 pm on ESPNU against No. 7 seed Team Gibson.
I took a look at the Team Gibson roster on the TBT Web site, and it’s an interesting mix of players who played college ball at schools such as Auburn, St. John’s, Michigan, Clemson, Iona and Marquette, among others.
Boeheim’s Army, with its former Syracuse basketball standouts, aims for another TBT crown.

It’s important to note that the No. 1 seed in the Syracuse regional, Blue Collar U, won the TBT championship a summer ago. Blue Collar U is a Buffalo alumni team, and Boeheim’s Army could potentially have to knock off the defending champs to get out of this regional and reach the quarterfinals of the 2023 TBT.

Classic cars rumble in for Syracuse Nationals at the NYS Fairgrounds (96 photos) (PS; $; photo gallery; Schild)
The rumbling of straight pipes, the whining of super chargers, and eye-watering exhaust returned to Central NY this weekend. The Syracuse Nationals, the largest car show in the Northeast, packed the New York State Fairgrounds’ 37-acre complex.
With temperatures approaching 90 degrees, pop-up shade tents were by far the most popular way for car owners to escape the blazing sun while chatting with attendees. There were even a few inflatable pools next to campers, providing a refreshing diversion for some car owners and their families.
For attendees, the Empire Expo Center is the place to go to cool off. Water bottle filling stations and fountains greet visitors inside the doors. An oasis of cool air, top show cars, and new cars for sale fill the building.
Syracuse Nationals was the brainchild of the late Bob O’Connor of Brewerton. Excited by the National Street Rod Association’s decision to hold their 1995 annual car show at the New York State Fairgrounds, he set out to create what we know of today as the largest car show in the east.

Another air quality alert issued for Syracuse area for Canada wildfire smoke (PS; Doran)
Another air quality alert has been issued for the Syracuse area starting at midnight tonight and lasting through midnight Monday night as smoke from Canadian wildfires drifts into Upstate New York again.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an quality health advisory warning for fine particulates, noting that the level is expected to higher than 100. That’s considered unhealthy for everyone. Those particles are so small they can burrow into the lungs and even the bloodstream.
The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects, especially children and those with respiratory problems.
The smoky haze the area may experience is due to ongoing wildfires in western Canada.
