National Drive-Thru Day was started by Jack in the Box restaurant to recognize all drive-thru businesses and to express appreciation for the availability of convenient meals that can be picked up with a vehicle. Drive-thrus are generally thought of as being for restaurants, but they also are used for banking, to purchase liquor, to gamble, and even to get married. Prior to the holiday's first observance in 2002, Jack in the Box asked California Governor Gray Davis for support. His response was to issue a commendation to recognize the day in the state. In past years, Jack in the Box has given out free milkshakes on the day.
Motorists were first served from their vehicles in 1921, when the first drive-in, the Pig Stand, opened outside of Dallas on the highway to Fort Worth. Diners ate on the premises in their vehicles, after carhops hopped on their running boards to take orders and clipped trays with food to their windows. Beginning in 1931, Pig Stand Number 21 in Los Angeles allowed orders to be made at a window, although it is unknown if diners had to get out of their vehicles to use it. Although the Pig Stand is known for being the first drive-in, they also have laid claim to having the first drive-thru window. As of 2020, there is just one Pig Stand still in operation: Pig Stand Number 29 in San Antonio, Texas. Following the opening of the first Pig Stand, more drive-in chains followed, like Maid-Rite and Carpenter's Sandwiches. Drive-ins were particularly popular in the late 1920s and early 1930s and were the precursor to the drive-thrus of the mid-twentieth century. In the 1930s, drive-thrus at banks, known as "motor banks," got their start. These drive-thrus offered bankers convenience and security and were another precursor to drive-thrus at restaurants.

Boeheim’s Army players coming and going: Roster moves ahead of Monday’s TBT opener (PS; $; Ditota)
Matt Morgan is out, Tyus Battle is out for at least one game and Boeheim’s Army has added a guard as it prepares to play Team Gibson Monday night in its first 2023 game of The Basketball Tournament.
Morgan, the former Cornell star who was in the conversation for French pro league MVP last season, signed what has been described as a lucrative deal to play for the London Lions next season. Because of that, said Boeheim’s Army general manager Shaun Belbey, Morgan will not play for Boeheim’s Army.
Morgan was the most valuable player on the Boeheim’s Army roster last season.
“Matt was planning on playing and then signed his new contract in London,” Belbey said. “About 30 minutes later, the GM of the team in London called me and said ‘We’re not allowing Matt to play. We’re paying him too much money and we can’t afford to get him hurt.’
“He wanted to play,” Belbey added. “He tried to get them to let him play and they just weren’t having it. He’s disappointed and obviously we’re disappointed.”
(These edicts are always weird. As if Morgan will play no basketball from now until the time the London Lions begin their season.)
Battle is currently playing in China. There has been much speculation about whether he will actually play in TBT because of the deal he struck to play overseas during the summer. Battle has been a Boeheim’s Army spectator over the years; last summer he was unable to play because of a foot injury.
“Tyus won’t be at the game on Monday,” Belbey said, “but we’re still planning on him hopefully meeting the team in Syracuse next week. Just trying to work out some stuff with his agent and will go from there.”
To replace Morgan, a scoring point guard, Boeheim’s Army has added Justin Robinson from Monmouth University. Robinson, a 5-foot-8 point guard, was a two-time MAAC Player of the Year during his college career. At 28, he has extensive overseas experience.
Boeheim’s Army will use Grant Riller, a College of Charleston grad, at point guard. Riller, 26, was a scorer and facilitator during Boeheim’s Army’s Saturday morning practice. Belbey said Riller and Robinson will split point guard duties, with Dwight Buycks, the former Marquette guard, moving to the shooting guard spot.

Chukwu missed 2021 Boeheim’s Army bounty because of Covid. He makes TBT debut tonight (PS; $; Ditota)
Two summers ago, when Boeheim’s Army won The Basketball Tournament and the $1 million in riches that accompanies that feat, Paschal Chukwu was stuck in Switzerland.
The former Syracuse basketball big man played two professional seasons in Switzerland. Covid kept him there the second year, when the virus essentially paralyzed world travel.
A native of Nigeria, he had hoped an American travel ban on most European countries would be lifted that summer so he could fly to the United States and play for Boeheim’s Army.
That did not happen.
“I was in the process of getting my green card,” Chukwu said Saturday morning at Liverpool High School. “Covid halted everything. Nobody was traveling. I wasn’t a U.S. citizen and that was a priority. So, I just couldn’t come back in.”
This year, Chukwu arrived in the U.S. in May, after his season in the French NM1 league ended. He has stayed in Connecticut with his host family, the Featherstons. And he has been working out in anticipation of 2023 TBT.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star recruit from D.C. area is vastly under-ranked (itlh; Adler)
Cam Ward, a 2025 four-star guard/small forward from the talent-rich Washington, D.C., market who received a scholarship offer from Syracuse basketball this spring, was sensational in his sophomore high-school term and followed that up with a ton of strong performances during the most recent AAU season.
All of the primary recruiting services, of late, have refreshed their national rankings for the rising-junior cycle. More updates will come in the future. But at present, the 6-foot-7 Ward is only rated in the top 50 by one recruiting Web site, and another recruiting service has him currently outside the top 100.
I get that these sorts of rankings are somewhat subjective, and they do ebb and flow throughout the course of high-school and AAU seasons. I also acknowledge that I’m not a recruiting analyst or a scout.

However, based on how this talented wing has played in recent months, to me, it’s an absolute joke that he’s not a consensus four-star, top-50 overall player in the 2025 class, if not higher than that. Naturally, that could end up happening. For now, though, Ward is supremely under-ranked.
Syracuse basketball offered a scholarship to 2025 four-star prospect Cam Ward in late April.
Ward is a highly athletic player who scores and rebounds with prowess. As a sophomore for Largo High School in Upper Marlboro, Md., during the 2022-23 stanza, he averaged 25.4 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per contest, according to media reports.

Syracuse Basketball: Prolific-scoring, 4-star guard from D.C. is rising fast (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball coaches have a lot of strong recruiting ties to the talent-rich Washington, D.C., market.
The Orange has a verbal commitment from 2024 four-star power forward Donnie Freeman, who hails from our nation’s capital. In the 2024 and 2025 classes, the ‘Cuse coaching staff has doled out scholarship offers to numerous players who play high-school and AAU ball in the D.C. area.
Multiple guys on the current Syracuse basketball roster, including junior forward Benny Williams, sophomore point guard Judah Mintz, sophomore wing Justin Taylor and sophomore forward Maliq Brown, have connections to the Washington region.
Another D.C.-area prospect to monitor is Acaden Lewis, a 2025 four-star point guard/shooting guard who had a strong sophomore year and has played well on the AAU circuit this spring and summer.
I’m not aware, to date, of the Orange showing interest in Lewis, or having offered him a scholarship. However, he’s a player in the rising-junior class who I’d love to see the ‘Cuse eventually begin pursuing.
Syracuse basketball should offer 2025 four-star guard Acaden Lewis.
The 6-foot-3 Lewis attends the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., and he runs with the Oxon Hill, Md.-based Team Durant in Nike’s EYBL league.
It’s worth noting that one of Lewis’ teammates at Sidwell Friends is 2024 four-star wing Caleb Williams, who had the Orange in his top seven before verbally committing to Georgetown last month.

Ice Cream Nachos? 5 places to get this hard-to-find trendy dessert in Central NY (PS; Miller)
Thanks a lot, TikTok. Because of you, ice cream nachos are hard to find in Central New York.
Ice cream nachos? Yep, that’s right, and they really are a thing.
Think of these as a sweetened-up version of the chips and dip that you get at Syracuse University’s dome. Instead of tortilla chips, you get thin circles that resemble waffle cones used to carry ice cream. Instead of that yellow cheese product, you get a swirl of soft-serve ice cream, usually just vanilla or chocolate. The salsa here is now hot fudge or smooth caramel. And the jalapeño peppers are swapped out for Heath Bar chips, crushed peanut butter cups, M&Ms or maybe KitKat chunks.
This dessert has be around for a few years, but it suddenly became popular this year because ice cream baristas throughout the country posted videos of their creative recipes.
“We saw the TikToks and said, ‘We should do that.’ So we did,” said Paige Keeler, whose cousins own Jen & Kerri’s Ice Cream Station in Jamesville. “The nachos became pretty popular.”
They became so popular that there’s now a waffle chip shortage. Mineo Wholesale Co. in East Syracuse sells goods to area restaurants. This was the first year they stocked the sweet chips, but their supply was depleted in early spring.
