This is a day for the American Chinese dish, chop suey. It usually consists of a meat—such as pork, beef, shrimp, chicken, or fish—and eggs, which are quickly cooked in a sauce with vegetables like cabbage, celery, and bean sprouts. It is usually served with rice, but stir-fried noodles may be added. In Cantonese, a Chinese language, its name literally means "odds and ends". There are so many conflicting stories of its origin, that no one really knows where it came from. Most believe it was invented by Chinese Americans. Some say it was made by those working on the transcontinental railroad, or for miners by a Chinese cook in San Francisco. Some claim it was made by the chef of a Chinese official who was visiting the United States in 1896, or that the official wandered into a Chinese restaurant and the chef there came up with it for him using leftovers. A few have also claimed that it is based off a dish from Taishan, a Chinese county in Guangdong province. No matter where it got its start, it is now a prominent food in American Chinese cuisine.

A look at the high school recruits who received scholarship offers at Syracuse’s Elite Camp (PS; Waters)
On Saturday, a dozen or so high school recruits arrived on the Syracuse University campus for the Orange basketball program’s annual Elite Camp.
By the end of the invite-only camp, six of those recruits walked out of the Carmelo K. Anthony Center will scholarship offers from Syracuse.
This year’s Elite Camp was notable for three reasons. It was the first since Adrian Autry took over as Syracuse’s head coach. The numbers of prospects attending was down slightly due to a Chris Paul camp for highly-regarded recruits, which also ran this past weekend. As a result, the Syracuse camp focused on younger prospects in the 2025 and 2026 classes.

Here is a look at the six high recruits who are known to have received a scholarship offer from the Syracuse coaches this past weekend. (Note: This story has been updated as more scholarship offers became known.)
Nigel James
James, a 6-foot point guard, attended Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Mass., last year, but the Huntington, Long Island native will transfer to Long Island Lutheran for the upcoming academic year.
James is currently rated No. 102 in the 2025 class by 247Sports. He has four stars on ESPN.com’s rating system.
He gained a lot of attention for his play with Expressions Elite, a Boston-based AAU team, on the Nike EYBL circuit this past summer.
He has received offers from over a dozen schools. The list includes Seton Hall, Iowa, Marquette, Providence, Rutgers, St. John’s, Southern California and Wake Forest.
Keyshaun Tillery
Tillery is an Albany, N.Y., native who played with the Albany City Rocks on the Nike EYBL circuit this summer. He attends New (N.H.) Hampton Prep. He is part of the 2025 recruiting class.
He has a 124 ranking on 247Sports’ national composite. Among his offers are ones from Georgia Tech, Washington, Temple and UMass.

Syracuse MBB recruiting: Orange will have some big-name visitors this Fall (TNIAAM; Wall)
The Adrian Autry era of Syracuse Orange men’s basketball has yet to tip-off but Autry’s staff is engaged with some big-time recruits.
Five-star SG Jalil Bethea has narrowed his list to five schools and he’ll be visiting Syracuse next month. Bethea’s other finalists are Villanova, Kansas, Miami and Alabama. He’s a consensus top-20 player in the 2024 class and with plays like this you can see why the Orange are making a big push to bring him from Archbishop Wood to the JMA Dome.
Class of 2025 recruit Kiyan Anthony will also be returning to Syracuse for an official visit this fall. Anthony has yet to set a date, but in addition to the Orange he’ll be visiting Florida State, Indiana and Michigan. He’s rated the top recruit in New York in his class and obviously Syracuse would like to land the legacy recruit.Jalil Bethea windmill slam

Another highly-ranked 2025 NY recruit just received an offer from Syracuse over the weekend. Nigel James will be teaming with Kiyan this season for Long Island Lutheran so it will be easy for the Orange staff to keep tabs on both players.TALK YOUR KIYAN ️

The Syracuse staff also extended offers to 2025 PG Keyshaun Tillery, a three-star out of New Hampton School, 2025 three-star Matt Gilhool, a 6’10 forward out of Penn Charter and 2026 PG Anthony Brown from Paul VI high school in Virginia.

The connections between Syracuse basketball and the DMV have been strong for a few years now, and Adrian Autry is trying to solidify them further. With a top 10 class early in the 2024 cycle and plenty of offers already pouring in for 2025, SU has thrown its hat into the 2026 ring.
Syracuse has offered Anthony Brown, a 6’1 point guard from Fairfax, Virginia. Brown is a member of the Team Takeover program based in the DMV and formerly coached by new Syracuse assistant Brendan Straughn before he became an assistant at George Washington.
Team Takeover is the same program that has produced Donnie Freeman, Syracuse’s top recruit in the class of 2024. Freeman will play his senior year of high school at IMG Academy and the power forward is a top 50 player in the nation.
He combined with New York City native Elijah Moore are two top 100 four star players. They’re SU’s only commits in this recruiting cycle. The Orange are trying to add to what is already an outstanding 2024 group, with 247Sports ranking them as the 10th best class in the country.
Even in today’s NIL era, connections are still incredibly important when it comes to recruiting, and Syracuse has plenty in the DMV. As an assistant, Autry earned a reputation as a good recruiter, especially in that part of the country.

You may have noticed that every so often we discuss how Syracuse tends to get in on a recruit early only to see bigger schools move in later and steal them away.
Is it happening again?
It’s a bit early to say, but the pattern is repeating, or at least the first part of it is: Syracuse identified Jalil Bethea early on and has focused on him for some time now.
But he has, in recruiting parlance, blown up, and Duke and Kentucky are now looking at the rising star.

Onondaga Lake Parkway lane reductions to start Tuesday (PS; Coin)
Beginning Tuesday morning, a portion of the Onondaga Lake Parkway will be reduced to one lane in each direction, the state Department of Transportation announced today.
The lane reductions will start after rush hour Tuesday and continue indefinitely, the state said.
It’s part of the state Department of Transportation’s efforts to stop trucks from striking the low railroad bridge over the busy roadway that connects Syracuse with Liverpool..
Half a dozen trucks have hit the 152-year-old bridge so far this year, according to the DOT. More than 22,000 people drive on the parkway on average each day.
Lanes will be reduced from two to one in each direction for about 1,200 feet on either side of the CSX bridge. The state said the lane reductions “will remain in place until further notice as (DOT) assesses their effectiveness and impact on local traffic conditions.”

Florida Georgia Line singer plays pop-up show in Syracuse before NYS Fair concert (PS; Herbert)
Surprise! Florida Georgia Line singer Tyler Hubbard performed a pop-up show in Syracuse the night before his solo New York State Fair debut.
Hubbard played an intimate, acoustic concert at Orange Crate Brew Pub near Marshall Street on the Syracuse University Hill Tuesday night. The set featured songs from his new solo album, including “5 Foot 9″ and “Dancin’ in the Country.”
Chris Taylor, leader for the local Custom Taylor Band, said on Facebook that Hubbard performed six songs in total and then signed autographs for fans.
“What a great pre-show,” Taylor said.
Hubbard is best known as one-half of Florida Georgia Line, the Grammy-nominated country duo behind hits like “Cruise” (feat. Nelly), “Dirt,” “Round Here,” “This Is How We Roll” (feat. Luke Bryan), “H.O.L.Y.” and “Meant to Be” (with Bebe Rexha). FGL drew 31,500 fans to Chevy Court in 2013, one of the 20 largest shows in NYS Fair concert history.

‘Eggbert’ the talking egg vs. ChatGPT: A NYS Fair face-off (PS; Featherstone)
There’s been a lot of handwringing lately over the rise of artificial intelligence and its potential impact on everything from education, to entertainment, to the future of the human race.
Few realize that one of the earliest forms of A.I. debuted 70 years ago at the 1953 NYS Fair in the form of a balding, anthropomorphic egg named Eggbert. Today you can find Eggbert in the Youth Building, next to the chick hatchery, but only for the run of the Fair.
Eggbert’s origins are shrouded in mystery. Mary Ann Whipple, one of Eggbert’s custodians, said his arrival at the Fair is linked to the first years of operation of the recently departed Baker’s Chicken Coop, where Dr. Bob Baker sold his now famous Cornell chicken.
