Squid and Cuttlefish Day—which also goes by Squittle Day and Squidturday—celebrates squid and cuttlefish. It is part of Cephalopod Awareness Days, which sprang from a forum on the TONMO, The Octopus News Magazine Online.
Squid and cuttlefish have a number of similarities. They are invertebrates with eight short arms and two long tentacles. Both are cephalopods, types of mollusks—along with the nautilus and octopus—that do not have hard shells. They both have a body cavity called a mantle that covers their organs. They both use jet propulsion to move, and both have a beak.
There are over 300 species of squid, which are in the Teuthida order. They live in every ocean, alone or in schools. They range in size: The giant squid may grow as long as 59 feet, while the pygmy squid is about the size of a pinky fingernail. They have a sleek, torpedo-like body, and are much quicker than cuttlefish. They use jet propulsion to move: They fill their mantle with water from small openings in their head, then shoot it out a funnel called a siphon, which they can move to change the direction they want to go. Squids have a pen, a flexible, feather-like structure, and a type of internal shell that supports the mantle and allows it to keep its shape.

Syracuse Basketball: New rating has 4-star who eyes official visit in top 40 (itlh; Adler)
Four-star Sadiq White is one of the top forwards around the country in the 2025 class, and reports suggest that the 6-foot-8 White is high on Syracuse basketball.
In mid-September, he took an unofficial visit to the Hill. As I noted in another recent column, White told SyracuseOnSI publisher Mike McAllister that he will “definitely” go on an official visit to the ‘Cuse at some point down the line, which is terrific to hear.
The Orange coaching staff appears to be prioritizing White in the junior class, as assistant Brenden Straughn also was in attendance for White not too long ago during an open gym at his North Carolina high school amid the fall recruiting period.
White is a standout for an excellent program, Myers Park High School in Charlotte, N.C. According to some high-school hoops experts, Myers Park is expected to contend for a top-25 national ranking in the 2023-24 season, when White is a junior.
Syracuse basketball is recruiting 2025 four-star forward Sadiq White hard.
The Orange coaching staff offered a scholarship to White in late April. During the most recent AAU season, he earned high praise from national analysts and scouts while competing for the Charlotte-based Team United in Nike’s EYBL league.
White’s full offer sheet also includes Ohio State, Georgetown, N.C. State, Tennessee, Texas, Cincinnati, Florida State, Georgia, Illinois, LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Alabama, among others.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star D.C. area guard in top 50, but way underrated (itlh; Adler)
In new rankings from one of the primary recruiting services, 2025 four-star guard/small forward Cam Ward, who holds a Syracuse basketball offer, arrived just inside the top 50.
However, I continue to contend that the 6-foot-7 Ward, who hails from the talent-rich Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, is being vastly undervalued in the junior class.
The Orange coaching staff offered a scholarship to Ward in late April. More recently, amid the fall recruiting period that began about a month ago, the ‘Cuse coaching staff was in attendance for Ward during an open gym at his school in Maryland.
When On3 updated its top 150 for the 2025 cycle, Ward arrived at No. 47 across the country, No. 14 at small forward and No. 1 in Maryland.
Syracuse basketball faces steep competition for 2025 four-star wing Cam Ward.
At present, ESPN appears to be the most bullish on Ward, placing him at No. 39 overall. Most of the other recruiting services have him outside of the top 50, and respectfully, I don’t get that at all.
As a sophomore at Largo High School in Upper Marlboro, Md., during the 2022-23 season, Ward averaged more than 25 points per game. In 2022-23, he was named to The Washington Post’s All-Met first team and received an All-America honorable-mention nod from MaxPreps.
This spring and summer, Ward was excellent on the AAU circuit while suiting up for the Oxon Hill, Md.-based Team Durant in Nike’s EYBL league. So for several recruiting services to him have outside the top 50 in the 2025 cycle is something for which I respectfully disagree.

Firefighters work at a fire at TK Tavern, 5600 Newport Road, Camillus on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2023. (Anne Hayes | ahayes@syracuyse.com)
Local gas station and deli chain proposes new store where a fire damaged Camillus tavern (PS; $; Doran)
A new Byrne Dairy & Deli convenience store and gas station is proposed in Camillus on the site where the TK Tavern restaurant operated before a fire heavily damaged the building.
An early-morning fire in January ripped through the TK Tavern restaurant/bar on Newport Road. The owners first thought they’d rebuild on the site, but later announced they would open a new location instead called TK on the Hill.
It will be at 3855 Split Rock Road, formerly home to a bar called DannO’s, about five or six miles from the tavern’s former location.
The property at 5600 Newport Road in Camillus is under contract to be sold to Sonbyrne Sales Inc., also known as Byrne Dairy stores. Sonbyrne needs a special permit to demolish the existing building and rebuild a new retail store with gas pumps.
The new shop would be about 4,300 square feet and be open 24 hours a day. It also would have eight fueling stations for passenger vehicles.
The site is a perfect location for a shop, said Christian Brunelle, senior executive vice president of Sonbyrne Sales.
