Today is devoted to suspenders, an accessory made of straps of fabric or leather that cross over a wearer's shoulders and hold up their pants. Suspenders usually form an X or Y shape on the wearer's back, and attach with clips or buttons. In Britain they are known as braces, and in the nineteenth century they were sometimes called galluses. Outside the United States the term suspenders refers to a garter belt.
Modern day suspenders were invented in 1820 by Albert Thurston, and their popularity has waxed and waned since then. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries they were almost universally worn, because most people wore high cuts pants, which made belts impractical. Samuel Clemens, better known by his pen name, Mark Twain, received an early patent for suspenders in 1871. Suspenders lost some popularity following World War I, where men had become used to wearing belts with their uniforms. Up until the mid-twentieth century suspenders were still considered an undergarment, and were covered by vests, waistcoats, or cardigans. Thus, as men wore vests less in the 1930's, they also wore suspenders less. In the 1940's fuller cut trousers came back into fashion, helping revive suspenders a bit. Now it is considered acceptable for suspenders to be seen, and that is often the preferred way to wear them. Although suspenders have not rivaled the belt for decades, there has been some resurgence in recent years. The film Wall Street may have helped contribute to this, and other prominent figures such as Larry King and Annie Lennox from the Eurythmics have also sported them.

Syracuse Basketball: Quadir Copeland, vastly underrated, a ‘Cuse X-factor (itlh; Adler)
Sophomore guards Judah Mintz and J.J. Starling are getting much of the preseason attention from national media outlets, and understandably so, but the Syracuse basketball backcourt’s depth and talent extends way beyond those two stars, and a guy to monitor in the upcoming season is sophomore guard/wing Quadir Copeland.
On Friday night, the 6-foot-6, 200-pound Copeland from Philadelphia stole the show at SU’s Orange Tip-Off event. When the men’s team conducted a scrimmage, he paced all scorers, with 11 points, according to cuse.com.
Quadir Copeland displayed his versatility at Orange Tip-Off, according to media reports. He has improved his long-range stroke, his head coach has said, he gets after it on the defensive end, he facilitates well for others, he’s a high-energy player, and he’s not shy about driving the lane against taller defenders.
In the 2023-24 season, which gets underway in early November for Syracuse basketball, Mintz and Starling are the expected starters in the backcourt. But the team’s guard group is filled with athleticism, depth and versatility.

Autry Adds Detail & Intensity To Syracuse Orange Preseason (1045theteam.com; Voelker)
Syracuse University men's basketball coach Adrian Autry knows that he will be under the 'Orange microscope,' as he tries to fill the shoes of Jim Boeheim. For 47 seasons Boeheim was the voice of Syracuse hoops, leading the Orange to 33 NCAA tournament appearances, including 5 Final Fours.
Autry's team has been working hard together since the summer. At least for the first few years, the 51-year old head coach will be facing comparisons to his predecessor. Donna Ditota of syracuse.com, broke down some early evaluations from Autry's players.

Syracuse Basketball Enters The Autry Era (cbbreview.com; O'Sullivan)
As Syracuse head coach Adrian Autry stood at the podium Friday, he seemed to still have some first-year jitters when it came to addressing the media.
“It is weird,” Syracuse basketball coach Adrian Autry said when asked how he felt being front and center. “This is the loudest and clearest this speaker has ever been… I’m [still] getting used to stepping in and speaking on behalf of the program.”
While public speaking may still be on his list of “things to improve on” (for him, anyway, he sounded fine to me), we knew going into this season that Autry was seemingly the perfect fit for the job.
Jim Boeheim was Autry’s coach back in the 90s, but also his mentor since 2010 when he joined the Syracuse basketball coaching staff. “Coach Red” is an outstanding recruiter, he’s known for his developmental skills, and he’s in tune with the culture in Salt City. If there was a perfect candidate to replace the great coach Boeheim, Adrian Autry certainly makes a strong case.
I ended up next to the newly minted head coach shortly after he ended the press conference and got a chance to speak with him candidly. Autry was very excited about this year’s Orange and about getting the chance to lead them. But what specifically was he excited about?
Here are three things you should know about the 2023-24 Syracuse Orange.
Depth in the backcourt
Judah Mintz is definitely the most recognizable name on this Syracuse basketball roster to anyone who follows the ACC.Mintz shined as a freshman, finishing the season with 16.3 PPG, was the conference leader in steals, and was an All-ACC Honorable Mention. He’ll reprise his role of starting point guard but Syracuse loses Joe Girard III, the team’s two-guard and leading scorer. This is where Autry has already showcased his recruiting abilities in the transfer portal.
Syracuse has three guards coming in that you’ll want to keep an eye on – JJ Starling, Kyle Cuffe, Jr., and Chance Westry.
Starling, a Notre Dame transfer, is a Central New York native and has known coach Autry since he was in grade school. On the court, he was an All-ACC Freshman Team selection, finishing with 11.2 PPG on a struggling Irish team.
Starling now gets the chance to represent his hometown team, and he says he didn’t have to be sold on the idea.
“It feels amazing having this opportunity. I’m beyond blessed,” Starling said with a grin. “I think I look good in white and orange.”

Syracuse guard JJ Starling was considered one of the best transfers in college basketball this offseason, leaving Notre Dame after their coaching change. Two national college basketball reporters, however, did not include Starling as one of their top impact transfers.
Andy Katz of NCAA.com listed his top 10 transfers as follows: Hunter Dickinson (Kansas), Ace Baldwin (Penn State), Ryan Nembhard (Gonzaga), Max Abmas (Texas), Harrison Ingram (North Carolina), Caleb Love (Arizona), Grant Nelson (Alabama), LJ Cryer (Houston), Jahvon Quinerly (Memphis) and Steven Ashworth (Creighton).
In addition, CBS Sports/College Hoops Today's Jon Rothstein listed his top 30 impact transfers and left Starling off his list. Syracuse men’s basketball: Planning some Jim Boeheim Day activities (TNIAAM; Wall)
The Syracuse Orange will honor Jim Boeheim during the 23-24 season by hosting “Jim Boeheim Day” when Syracuse plays the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on February 24th.
Boeheim had originally stated that he wasn’t going to attend games after seeing the attention Coach K drew at his first game as a fan at Duke. However, it’s great to see that the Hall of Fame Coach has agreed to this event so that Orange fans can express their gratitude to the legend.
As it was pointed out yesterday by commenter Orange&P, the dedication of Jim Boeheim Court happened on February 24, 2002, but let’s not repeat the outcome of that one shall we.
Now onto our thoughts about how Syracuse should celebrate Jim Boeheim Day:
- Hand out rally towels or t-shirts with 1,116 wins. Make them unauthorized. Have students hand them out before fans enter the Dome. Tell the NCAA you’ll appoint an Independent Committee to get to bottom of these allegations.
- Jacket Toss Contest obviously. Competitors will be judged not only on distance, but artistry as well.
- Chicken parm specials at Dome Concessions.
- Yell at a student reporter. (Note: It’s going to cost you money to yell at anyone from the TNIAAM staff)
- Jim Boeheim Masks for all fans. Good luck shooting into a sea of these faces.

Syracuse men’s basketball: the x-factor players who will make or break the 2023-24 season (TNIAAM; Chiappone)
There’s plenty of excitement surrounding the upcoming season for the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team as the program turns the page from the Jim Boeheim era to Adrian Autry.
Autry will have some on-court questions he’ll need to find some answers for as he and the rest of the Orange prepare for their 2023-2024 campaign, and part of that involves sorting through the current roster amid all the additions from the offseason.
The program will need to count on some of its returning players and incoming transfers to step up to the plate if the goal for Syracuse is to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2020-2021.
With that in mind, here are the most important x-factor players who will define the Orange’s season this year:
Naheem McLeod
McLeod was the Orange’s biggest add (literally) from Autry’s acquisitions through the transfer portal. The 7-foot-4 center played 28 games as a sophomore last season for the Florida State Seminoles and averaged 3.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game in 13.1 minutes per contest.While his playing time (12.3 MPG across 46 collegiate games) is incredibly limited, you can’t deny McLeod’s height and overall size translating to some success on both ends of the floor.

After a storied career at Syracuse University, Hall of Fame men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim is reportedly transitioning into his second career.
Per CBS' Jon Rothstein: Boeheim is finalizing an agreement to join ESPN for the upcoming college hoops season and will also work for Westwood One as a radio analyst during next year's NCAA Tournament.
Fans reacted to Wednesday's news on social media.
"HEARTWARMING: retiree goes from yelling at student journalists to yelling at full-time ones instead," tweeted Crimson Quarry.
"Another Syracuse grad ventures into the world of broadcasting …" Rich Cimini winked.
"I want Boeheim in a little booth commenting on the action just like on the Muppets. But who would be the Waldorf to his Statler?" asked Howie Lindsey.
"True Basketball Knowledge Will Be Spoken During These Games!" commented Joseph Girard III.
"International Nosepicking Tournament on ESPN+ now closer to being a reality," replied Casual Hoya.
"Maybe hiring an old, condescending personality will be a good thing for ESPN! If anyone knows how to find gold it’s definitely this guy!" said Oakland Zoo.

Syracuse, things are looking up: We might be getting a Taco Bell that sells beer (PS; $; Doran)
A twist on a fast-food restaurant may be coming to Manlius.
A developer wants to turn the former Manlius village firehouse on Stickley Drive into a Taco Bell Cantina, complete with an expanded menu, beer and frozen alcoholic drinks, and entertainment.
The two-story, 10,000-square-foot fire station on Stickley Drive was built in 1968 and closed in 2017 when a new, more modern station was constructed.
The proposal for a Taco Bell Cantina came after Onondaga County planners and Manlius village officials frowned on the idea of tearing down the existing fire station and building a new Taco Bell. That proposal called for a traditional Taco Bell with a drive-thru.
Planners suggested reusing the old Stickley Fire Station, and the developer went back to the drawing board, said Mike McCracken, director of development for Hospitality Restaurant Group.
“We came up with this larger Taco Bell Cantina idea that has a larger sit-down area but still has a drive-thru,” he said. “This would be a blend of the two.”
Taco Bell opened its first Cantina in 2015, and now has more than 60 of these restaurants across the U.S. One location in Las Vegas has a wedding chapel, DJ booth and Twisted Freezes that can be made with alcohol.

New Yorkers celebrate opening of first Wegmans in Manhattan (PS; TCA)
Tailgaters. TV crews. Cheering fans.
The unusual buzz on Astor Place in the East Village Wednesday morning was for Wegmans, the Rochester-based supermarket chain making its long-awaited Manhattan debut.
The brand is famous for the particular enthusiasm of its fans, who have been known to show up in their thousands on opening days.
Casey Whyland, 27, one of dozens waiting in line, was hard to miss in a Wegmans cap and sweatshirt. She brought a group of high school friends with her for the occasion, all of whom grew up going to the Wegmans in upstate DeWitt.
“The culture, the fandom, the community — it’s a gift,” said the actor, who lives on the Upper West Side. “It’s so much more than a grocery store.”
The new site is 87,500 square feet, making it one of the largest grocery stores in the borough. It takes up two floors in the historic Wanamaker Building, previously home to the Astor Place Kmart before it shuttered in 2021. The location has over 600 new employees.
Wegmans has more than a hundred stores along the East Coast. Its only other New York City location opened at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 2019.
Jeff Pollock and Brad Orego remember the occasion well. The pair showed up to tailgate that day, a tradition they were happy to revive.
“That time around it was pouring rain, about 45 degrees out I think. So it seemed like better weather (and I figured) why not?” said Pollock, 35, who works in marketing.
The Buffalo natives were decked out in full Buffalo Bills gear on Wednesday morning, presiding over a table of fresh breakfast food they prepared with ingredients from the Brooklyn location.
The Astor Place store manager, Matthew Dailor, remembered the pair from four years ago.
“You guys were in Brooklyn too, right?” he asked them. “That’s insane!”
Dailor is a 30-year Wegmans veteran and touted the same thing as many of the fans, namely the friendliness of its staff.

Cheers! ‘Frasier’ star Kelsey Grammer to serve his Upstate NY beer at Turning Stone (PS; Herbert)
“Cheers” and “Frasier” star Kelsey Grammer is set to serve his beer at another Central New York event next week.
Grammer will give guests the chance to sample and buy different beers from his Upstate New York-based Faith American Brewing Company on Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Upstate Tavern at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona. Guests will be able to meet and mingle with Grammer during the event from 6-8 p.m.
No reservations are required; attendees must be 21 or older.
The event almost immediately follows an appearance by Grammer at Moe’s Tavern, a pop-up bar inspired by “The Simpsons,” at 16 Stone Brewpub in Utica. Grammer, who voiced Sideshow Bob on the animated TV series, will pour his Faith American Ale from 3-5 p.m. Thursday; tickets are required.
Grammer, 68, is an Emmy-winning actor best known for his role as Dr. Frasier Crane on “Cheers” and “Frasier.” A “Frasier” revival series recently launched on Paramount+, showing the character moving back to Boston (but not visiting the bar where everyone knows your name); fans can watch the first episode for free on YouTube.
His acting credits also include “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Down Periscope,” “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “The Last Tycoon,” “The Expendables 3,” “Anastasia,” “Toy Story 2,” and “30 Rock.” He’s next set to appear in the TV series “Paper Empire” with Denise Richards, Robert Davi, and Helena Mattsson.
