Welcome to Pumpkin Pie Day!

The main season for eating pumpkin pie begins with the fall harvest and ends with Christmas. During this time it is often eaten on Halloween and Thanksgiving. Pumpkin Pie Day takes place right before Thanksgiving, making it the perfect time to bake a pie to take to your holiday gathering.

Pumpkin pie consists of a pumpkin filling that is a sweet, orange to brown pumpkin-based custard, made with fresh or canned pumpkin or a packaged pumpkin pie filling. It is commonly flavored with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. Packaged pumpkin filling usually already has these spices in it. Pumpkin pie shells tend to be flaky, and usually don't have a top crust.

Pumpkins are native to the Americas. They were brought back to Europe by explorers in the sixteenth century and began being cultivated there. Some of the Pilgrims who came to America in 1620 may have already been familiar with pumpkins, but if not, some form of pumpkin food was served at the harvest celebration the following year, and they would have learned of them then.

Syracuse, No. 11 Gonzaga seek to bounce back in Honolulu (oanow.com; FLM)

Gonzaga coach Mark Few is no stranger to a box score.

Few quickly assessed the reasons the 11th-ranked Bulldogs lost Monday in the first round of the Maui Invitational -- and he hopes to correct those issues Tuesday when Gonzaga takes on Syracuse in Honolulu.
Gonzaga (2-1) took its first defeat Monday against No. 2 Purdue as the Boilermakers rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to top the Bulldogs 73-63.

Few's team shot just 6 of 32 from 3-point range (18.8 percent) as part of a 37.7 percent shooting display overall, and the Bulldogs finished with more turnovers (14) than assists (13).

"I think if you look at the threes we took, they were all good shots," Few said. "I don't know that we took any bad ones during that stretch. Obviously, that was a fairly big factor. I thought the bigger factor was that we just turned the ball over too much."

Nolan Hickman led the team with four turnovers and also shot just 5 of 14 from the field while scoring 11 points. Ryan Nembhard hit 5 of 17 overall, including 1 of 9 from long distance, and turned it over twice while also finishing with 11 points.

The Bulldogs' backcourt hopes to regroup against an Orange defense that gave up 43 second-half points to No. 7 Tennessee a first-round loss on Monday. Yet, first-year Syracuse coach Adrian Autry wasn't upset with his team's defensive effort.

"I thought we played well for a big part of the game defensively," Autry said. "Overall, I thought we competed and battled. We've got to get better rebounding the ball."

Indeed, Syracuse was outrebounded 48-33 by the Volunteers and allowed 13 offensive boards in the 73-56 defeat.

Chris Bell led the Orange with 16 points, while Judah Mintz chipped in 15 points. Syracuse shot only 35 percent from the floor and 30 percent (6 of 20) from beyond the arc. An 8-of-17 effort from the foul line didn't help matters, either.

ACC Roundup - Virginia, Syracuse Bullied, But Florida State And Louisville Are Coming Along (DBR; King)

In Monday’s ACC Action, Tennessee popped Syracuse 73-56, Wisconsin punked Virginia 65-41 and Louisville fell to Indiana 74-66.

Only Florida State won, beating UNLV 83-75 in the Sunshine Slam. The ‘Noles basically led the entire game although Vegas cut into that on several occasions, but a late 16-5 run sealed the deal. Jamir Watkins led the way with a career high 19 points and an impressive eight assists.

Cam Corhen shot 6-7 and kicked in 14 points. Overall, FSU shot 62.7 percent and 41 percent from deep.

Also worth noting - last season, injuries would not allow Leonard Hamilton to go deep into his bench. So if you want to get an idea of how things are going, look at minutes played.

He used 10 guys and everyone got at least 10 minutes except for Tom House, who got just two.

Here’s a nice stat: prior to Tennessee’s win, Syracuse was 9-0 in Maui. Not bad.

And they weren't too far off in this one in the end, down five with three minutes to play.

But the Vols rattled off 12 points in a vicious closing kick.

When you play a Rick Barnes team, you know you’re going to take a beating. Chris Bell shot 7-13 but the rest of the starters combined to shoot 8-31, which works out to just under 26 percent.

It’s nothing new - Barnes has coached that way since he was at Clemson and before that, Providence. As Jon Scheyer said last season after Duke lost to the Vols, you have to be better than they are, which in this case means more physical.

Virginia’s night was similar: Wisconsin traditionally has a huge roster and this year, Greg Gard has six guys 6-9 or taller. Virginia by contrast has two big freshman and a skinny grad student transfer over 6-9.

MBB: Size Matters (Arena, that is)

(Because it's HUGE!)

Who has the biggest basketball venues? the smallest?

WHO HAS THE BIGGEST HOOPS ARENAS?

Size may (or may not?) be everything, but as we jump into hoops season, I thought we should do a quick update on who has the biggest basketball arenas.

Here are the 13 confs that y'all ask for most:

Any surprises?

What this tells me: the ACC needs Syracuse, Louisville, North Carolina and NC State to be good at basketball. Duke can focus on basketball as well (despite their small arena). Everyone else needs to focus on football.

Defense contractor HII has moved its regional office and 100 jobs from Salina to the City Center development in downtown Syracuse. HIIHII

Fast-growing defense contractor makes former downtown Sibley’s Department Store its home (PS; Moriarty)

A former downtown Syracuse department store is the new home of a defense contractor making the sophisticated electronics that help control missile launches from U.S. Navy ships.

Just across the street from the Landmark Theatre and on the same block as Salt City Market, HII is employing 100 people working on military contracts.

Among the contracts they are working on: an $87 million Department of Defense contract to conduct research and development on the electronics for the Navy’s vertical launching system, a system for storing and launching missiles from ships.

Inside the old Sibley’s Department store -- now rebuilt as an office building -- HII workers on two floors focus on radars, electronic warfare, communications, and the design and redesigning of sensors, processors and processing.

HII (formerly Huntington Ingalls Industries) recently moved its offices from the Salina Meadows Office Park to the newly opened City Center project.

The operation, part of HII’s Mission Technologies business, occupies the fourth floor and basement of the former department store at 400 S. Salina St.

Dino Cencetti, vice president of operations for Mission Technologies’ C5ISR business group, said growth in the company’s business over the last 10 years meant it needed more space.

He said the company chose City Center for its new home because the location in the heart of downtown, adjacent to Armory Square, appealed to its workforce, which consists of many young engineers.

Areas shaded in purple will be under a winter weather advisory late Tuesday and early Wednesday. The areas shaded in tan are under wind advisories.National Weather Service

Parts of Upstate NY under winter weather alerts as Thankgiving travel starts (PS; Coin)

Winter weather advisories have been issued for the North Country and Adirondacks as the Thankgiving travel weekend kicks into gear.

The National Weather Service says those drivers in those areas could hit a mix of ice and rain that could make roads slippery.

“Plan on slippery road conditions on untreated surfaces,” the weather service said.

High winds, with gusts up to 40 mph, could also make for difficult driving.

The storm is expected to hit late afternoon Tuesday and last into Wednesday.

For most of Upstate, the storm will bring rain and wind, but little snow and ice.

After the storm moves out early Wednesday, weather for the rest of the travel weekend should be mostly clear. There could be some light snow over the weekend, but mostly in the North Country again.
