Sacagawea (also spelled Sacajawea and Sakakawea) is believed to have died on today's date in 1812, and today we honor her contributions and courage. The daughter of a Shoshone chief, and part of the Lemhi band of the Shoshone tribe, she was born in May 1788 in the Lemhi Valley, near the Salmon River and the Rocky Mountains, in present-day Lemhi County, Idaho.
The Hidatsa tribe was enemies of the Shoshones, and they kidnapped Sacagawea in 1800 and brought to a Hidatsa-Mandan settlement in North Dakota. In 1803 or 1804, she became the property of fur trader Toussaint Charbonneau, who took her as one of his wives. Sacagawea's name means "bird woman" in the Hidatsa language—"sacaga" means bird and "wea" means woman. But, the Shoshone and some others claim that her name means "boat pusher" in the Shoshone language.

Syracuse Basketball: How to watch Orange play Greg Paulus-led Niagara at Dome (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball, which has won three straight and five of its last six games, will wrap up its 2023-24 non-conference docket on Thursday evening when the Orange hosts fellow Empire State team Niagara.
This past Sunday, in South Dakota, the ‘Cuse (8-3) notched a solid non-conference victory on a neutral floor. Syracuse basketball put the clamps down on the defensive end, and the Orange defeated Pac-12 Conference school Oregon by 20 points.
Now the ‘Cuse is set to play Niagara (3-6) out of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, a program that is located in the Buffalo, N.Y., region.
The Purple Eagles, winners of two contests in a row, are led by head coach Greg Paulus, a Central New York native who played one season as a graduate student at quarterback for Syracuse football.

The Orange and the Purple Eagles will face off on Thursday, Dec. 21, beginning at 5 pm. Coverage will be available on the ACC Network Extra as well as on fuboTV.
To make matters more fun, Syracuse football will play in its bowl game later on Thursday night, as the Orange looks to close out its 2023 season at 7-6 overall.
In their all-time series together, per SU Athletics, Syracuse basketball is 55-28 against Niagara, and the ‘Cuse has captured 10 straight successes in this series.
Assuming that the Orange can get past the Purple Eagles, that would give the ‘Cuse a more than credible 9-2 record during its relatively challenging non-conference calendar.
Here is Niagara’s resume so far in 2023-24. It has wins versus Saint Francis (Pa.), Buffalo State and NJIT, while the Purple Eagles have fallen to Notre Dame, Bucknell, Hawaii, Saint Peter’s, Quinnipiac and St. Bonaventure.

Adrian Autry Deserves a lot of Credit (ornagefizz.net; Frank)
When Adrian Autry was announced as Jim Boeheim’s successor as the head coach of Syracuse basketball, there was a lot of excitement and positives, but also some significant questions about how he would play stylistically, recruit, and rotate his players. Boeheim was obviously known for his zone, but also his very short leash with players and having a tight rotation. Autry has adapted to some of those qualities, but as he said in his opening press conference, he’s a new face with new ideas but wants to uphold the Orange standard and culture.
Through 11 games, Autry has played some games with only eight guys, and others where 10 players have gotten game action. Managing minutes and egos is always one of the most difficult things a basketball coach has to do, and on a team where a lot of the guys are a similar age, level of experience, or caliber of recruit, that could breed competition within the team, but it seems to have a positive affect, and that is due to Autry.
Furthermore, he inherited a team that had its top two scorers enter the transfer portal as grad students, its star freshman guard enter his name in the NBA Draft and not announce his return until the very last second, and had to deal with the scar tissue of players who did not have great early returns playing for Boeheim. So, he retained all of the talent from last year’s roster in terms of underclassmen and hit the transfer portal to bring in four players with some college experience at big programs.
Early on, it was clear that this team was still learning how to play with each other, like when they were down by 24 in the second half to Colgate or fell apart in the second half against Tennesse, Gonzaga, and Virginia. But, they’ve been steadily improving, and have gotten contributions from different parts each night. Lately, it’s been Quadir Copeland off the bench who has provided a constant spark on both ends of the floor. Some nights, it’s Chris Bell who looks like he cannot miss no matter how close a defender is to him. Others, JJ Starling has the hit hand and is getting to the basket, finding his teammates, and hitting jumpers from everywhere. It’s a group that is deep and versatile.

The Purple Eagles are 1-3 on the road. Niagara is eighth in the MAAC with 12.3 assists per game led by Henderson averaging 2.1.
Syracuse averages 7.4 made 3-pointers per game, 1.2 more made shots than the 6.2 per game Niagara gives up. Niagara has shot at a 46.7% clip from the field this season, 4.9 percentage points higher than the 41.8% shooting opponents of Syracuse have averaged.

ACC lands 5 teams in NCAA Tournament in Joe Lunardi's latest bracketology update - Saturday Road (saturdayroad.com; Davis)
The ACC has five teams projected to make the NCAA Tournament this year, according to the latest bracketology update from ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.
It’s been a year of mixed results so far for the ACC, but there are a few teams who are having solid seasons at this point in the campaign. Clemson, who has been one of the biggest surprises in the country to this point, is currently projected as the ACC’s automatic qualifier.
Here’s the ACC’s tournament outlook according to Lunardi as of Dec. 19:
North Carolina and Duke both entered the season as highly-ranked teams, but are struggling to meet lofty expectations. Duke is 7-3 with losses to Arizona, Georgia Tech and Arkansas. Carolina is also 7-3 and has dropped contests to UConn, Villanova and Kentucky.
Clemson, on the other hand, is 9-1 this season. The Tigers won 9 games to start the 2023-24 season before losing to Memphis earlier this week. The Tigers have not made the NCAA Tournament since 2021.

Billy Strings proves a bluegrass band can fill an arena (review) (PS; $; Baker)
Saturday night, just before 7:30 p.m., throngs of people filled the sidewalks wrapping the War Memorial to wait in long lines in the unseasonably warm December air. Next door, the symphony was hosting its annual “Home for the Holidays” concert. A few smart-dressed folks in nice coats found themselves wading through the crowd of tie-dye and smoke and bearded dudes, bewildered.
“Is this all for the symphony??” one woman asked.
Most certainly, no. It was not.
The crowd of nearly 6,000 people shuffling into the sold-out War Memorial was there to see Billy Strings, the Grammy-winning bluegrass prodigy who has breathed new life into a generations-old genre steeped in tradition.
It’s unusual to see a crowd that size for a band with no electric guitar, no drums, no wardrobe changes and no gimmicks. Strings doesn’t have a chart-topping song, or a viral TikTok video or a celebrity beau. What he’s got is a once-in-a-generation talent, a voice full of soul that belies his age and a flair that blends old music with new style to find an audience that transcends age.
Billy Strings, born William Apostol, performed two sets over the course of three hours Saturday. He covered Led Zeppelin with banjos and fiddles. He played Ralph Stanley and some Grateful Dead-adjacent tunes. He revived traditional mountain songs and Prohibition protest numbers.
Strings carries the baton in a long tradition of handed-down, finger-picked music, including modern artists from David Grisman to Alison Krauss to String Cheese Incident to Old Crow Medicine Show to Mumford & Sons.
