Welcome to National Ginger Ale Day!

March 13th is National Ginger Ale Day. We’ve been drinking ginger ale since early childhood—Mom gave it to us not as much as a soft drink, but as a palliative for stomach aches. It still works! In fact, ginger tea has been brewed for centuries, if not millennia, to aid with everything from indigestion to arthritis (it’s an anti-inflammatory). Just steep slices of fresh ginger root in hot water. Here’s more from Web MD. But back to ginger ale: Fortunately for those of us who reserve our sugar calories for dessert, ginger ale manufacturers make no sugar added* versions in addition to the classic sugar-sweetened (or in the case of the three largest brands, high fructose corn syrup-sweetened†).

SU basketball vs NC State in ACC tournament: 5 Key Things to Know (PS; $; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange will test the axiom that it’s hard to beat a team three times in a season when it faces North Carolina State in the second round of the ACC tournament on Wednesday.

Syracuse swept the season series with N.C. State, taking a 77-65 win on Jan. 27 at the JMA Wireless Dome and then beating the Wolfpack on its home floor 87-83 on Feb. 20.

Syracuse finished the regular season with a 20-11 overall record and an 11-9 mark in the ACC. That earned the Orange the No. 7 seed a first-round bye in the conference tournament.

N.C. State, the No. 10 seed, had to beat Louisville 94-85 in Tuesday’s opening round in order to get its third shot at the Orange.

N.C. State might be without DJ Horne, who led the Wolfpack in scoring this season. Horne sat out N.C. State’s win over Louisville. N.C. State coach Kevin Keatts said Horne would be a “game-time decision’' for the contest with the Orange.

The SU-N.C. State game is scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2.

Here are 5 Key Things to Know about the matchup:

How motivated will Judah Mintz be?

The ACC’s media might have taken on the role of Knute Rockne with Judah Mintz as George Gipp. Mintz appears to be using a perceived slight in the media’s voting for All-ACC teams as motivation heading into the conference tournament.

Mintz was left off the All-ACC first team. He and a few family members expressed their frustration with the voting on social media.

In conference games, Mintz finished eighth in the league in scoring (17.3 points per game), fourth in assists (4.8) and third in steals (2.1).

Horne will be ‘game-time decision’ for ACC tournament game vs. SU (PS; $; Waters)

The status of North Carolina State’s leading scorer DJ Horne remains up in the air just 24 hours ahead of the Wolfpack’s game against Syracuse in the second round of the ACC tournament.

Horne, a 6-foot-1 senior, injured his hip in N.C. State’s final regular-season game at Pittsburgh on Saturday. He dressed but didn’t play in the Wolfpack’s 94-85 win over Louisville in the first round of the ACC tournament on Tuesday at the Capital One Arena.

Horne ranked second in the ACC in scoring in conference games this season, averaging 19.4 points in 20 league games. He also ranked sixth in 3-point shooting at 41.5% and fifth in 3-pointers made per game (3.0).

He was a third-team All-ACC selection in the conference’s annual media vote, announced on Monday.

After his team’s win over Louisville, N.C. State coach Kevin Keatts addressed Horne’s status for Wednesday’s game against Syracuse.

“When we practiced (Monday), he shot a little bit. We wanted him to go through warm-ups to see how he felt. I wasn’t going to play him unless I knew we absolutely had to have him. We’ll do the same thing (prior to the Syracuse game). He’ll have round-the-clock treatment.’'

DJ Horne Will Be a Game Time Decision for Wolfpack's 2nd Round ACC Tournament Matchup Against Syracuse | Carolina Blitz (carolinablitz.com; Hurt)

The NC State Wolfpack defeated the Louisville Cardinals, 94-85, to advance to the second round of the ACC Tournament. Five Wolfpack players scored in double digits, with Casey Morsell leading the way with 25 points.

NC State was without leading scorer DJ Horne, who has been nursing a hip injury and will be a game-time decision for Wednesday’s 2nd round matchup against Syracuse.

“When we practiced yesterday he shot a little bit and we wanted him to go through kind of our warmups to see how he felt,” head coach Kevin Keatts said after the win. “I wasn’t going to play him unless I knew we absolutely had to have him. We’ll do the same thing. He’ll have around the clock treatment. The great thing about it is we play a 7:00pm game tomorrow, but he’ll still be a game-time decision.”

The Wolfpack played the Orange twice these season – losing both games. Horne was the team’s leading scorer in both contests.

NC State vs Louisville Game Notes:

  • Casey Morsell finished the game 5-of-12 from the floor and a perfect 13-of-13 from the foul line. The 13 free throws were the most by an NC State player without a miss in ACC Tournament history. The previous most for an NC State player was Cat Barber who went 12-for-12 for the Pack against Pitt in the 2015 ACC Tournament.
  • Jayden Taylor finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals. The eight rebounds were a career-high and the four steals tied a career-high.

Everyone is Talking About Maliq Brown (orangefizz.net; Frank)

Ahead of the start of Syracuse’s run in the ACC Tournament as the Orange try to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021, Maliq Brown is being highlighted as one of the key features of an SU team that has overachieved and is a couple positions away from being in position for the tournament.

On Monday morning, Donna Ditota of syracuse.com put out a big story on Brown’s impact on Syracuse and against ACC opponents. So, here are a few things that coaches around the league had to say about the Orange’s starting big man.

Where would Syracuse be this season without Maliq Brown?

He’s been a steadying force on offense and defense this year.

“I’m someone who tries to get the job done.”Brown is ‘probably the most valuable, most important’ player on SU basketball roster

SYRACUSE ASSISTANT COACH BRENDEN STRAUGHN

“The guys respect him,” Straughn said via syracuse.com. “They know what he does. He comes to work every day and gives it all he’s got. He’s more of the stability or the calming influence on the group than some of the other guys with a lot more personality.”

“He can help us even more than what he’s doing. That’s the gift and the curse because he’s already doing so much,” Straughn said via syracuse.com. “This guy’s playing 35 minutes. He’s stepping out on every ball screen. And on offense he’s rolling on every ball screen… Hopefully, he’s not wearing down. He does sometimes leave you wanting, like ‘Maliq, I think you can go and score that.’ But then you keep in mind he’s playing 35 minutes.”

SU HEAD COACH ADRIAN AUTRY

“He’s made really good decisions when he’s had the ball in his hands, as far as making the reads in pick and rolls. He’s done a really good job of that and being opportunistic,” Autry said via syracuse.com. “I still think he can do a little bit more. He can be a little bit more aggressive.”

The group pushing to add new baseball fields to the Carrier Park Field of Dreams in DeWitt says it raised more than $100,000 toward the project at a Saturday night event in Pompey.

Jim Boeheim, Adrian Autry and members of the Syracuse men’s basketball team and coaching staff turned out for the event at Heritage Hill Brewhouse.

The event, hosted by local businessman Vinny Lobdell and family, was to raise money toward a multi-million dollar expansion of the Syracuse Challenger baseball complex in DeWitt. Syracuse Mets General Manager Jason Smorol emceed the event.

Teams competed last summer at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Since it began in the 1980s, the league has grown to now include participation from 200 children and adults. Under current management, led by Dom Cambareri, the team has expanded their operations to include more divisions. The growing number of participants pushed management to expand their fields.

Former Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim has been calling games this season for ESPN, and this week he’s doing it at a familiar place—the men’s ACC Tournament, which is being held in Washington D.C.

Boeheim angered a lot of fans during Tuesday night’s Louisville-NC State first round game when he took a shot at a Wolfpack player for having some fun while celebrating a teammate's big play.

Boeheim, a Hall of Famer who coached at Syracuse for 47 years, went off on a bizarre rant about NC State’s recent history after seeing this moment during the second half of the game, which the Wolfpack won, 94-85.

Joe Biden says Syracuse University wants to host his presidential library (PS; $; Weiner)

President Joe Biden says Syracuse University is among a few places competing to become a location for his presidential library.

Biden made the disclosure in an October interview with special counsel Robert Hur, who was investigating whether the president mishandled classified documents.

A transcript of the five-hour interview was made public today when Hur testified before Congress about his conclusion that Biden should not face criminal charges.

At one point during the interview, Biden said his wife brought up the question of where to locate his library after she spoke at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri.

Biden said he told his wife, Jill, that “I don’t think I’m supposed to while I’m president think about the library.”

He added, “My recollection is there’s people competing. Syracuse University would like it, University of Delaware would like it. They want to do it down here in Washington.”

Biden’s comments about his presidential library were first reported by The Washington Post, which obtained a copy of the transcript before it was released to the public.

It’s not clear what discussions, if any, Biden had with Syracuse University about hosting his presidential library.

SU officials had no immediate comment today when asked about Biden’s remarks in the interview.

Biden is a 1968 graduate of SU’s College of Law and has maintained close ties to the school. His late son, Beau, was a 1994 graduate of SU’s law school. The president has also returned to Syracuse at least five times to give commencement addresses and other speeches.

Sneak Peek: Adam Weitsman’s long-awaited sushi restaurant opens in Skaneateles (video) (PS; Miller)

Hidden Fish is more than just another restaurant for Adam Weitsman’s collection. To him, this modern take on sushi was a long-term project among friends working together. It just happened to take a year longer than anticipated.

“When you have that many people involved, and you all want it to be perfect, it’s going to take a while,” Weitsman said in January. “But we did what we set out to do.”

Hidden Fish, located at at 7 Fennell St. in Skaneateles, will open its doors to the public at 5 p.m. Tuesday. This is the fourth restaurant in Skaneateles for Weitsman, the scrap metal tycoon and philanthropist. He partnered with Jeff Knauss, Vinny Lobdell and Lobdell’s son, Noah.

The group hired Chef Joseph Tran, who recently moved here from San Diego.

“The moment we tasted his food, we knew he was the one,” Weitsman said.

Chef Tran said he will prepare signature sushi rolls and other Asian-inspired delicacies using local ingredients along with fish flown in from all over the world. Even if you don’t care for sushi, he said he will find a dish you will enjoy.

“We expect this to be unlike any sushi place,” Knauss said. “People with discerning tastes will come here to see him, to watch him work.”

Weitsman bought the building years ago. It had been a doctor’s office located in the back of a nondescript building along Skaneateles Creek. The inside was drab and broken up into too many tiny rooms beneath a drop ceiling. But it was right in the village, just 482 feet down the street from Clover’s, the diner he opened in June 2022.

Construction started in early 2023, with the walls coming down and a new kitchen, floors and bar going up.

“We wanted to create a centralized space,” Weitsman said. “It’s a comfortable spot to enjoy with friends and family, inside and outside.”

‘Prom Dates’: American High’s new movie gets release date, funny teaser trailer (PS; $; Herbert)

American High and Hulu are inviting everyone to watch the latest movie shot in Syracuse — with a teaser trailer in the form of a “promposal.”

The first look at “Prom Dates” shows “The Goldbergs” actor Kenny Ridwan performing a hilariously over-the-top version of Harry Belafonte’s “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)” to ask a classmate to prom. Tony Award nominee Julia Lester (“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”) and Antonia Gentry, who played Ginny in Netflix’s “Ginny & Georgia,” are seen in the school auditorium, cringing in embarrassment.

It’s unclear if Ridwan’s character will get a “yes,” but the clip serves as an invitation to the real world audience with the announcement of a release date: May 3, just in time for high school prom season.

“Prom Dates,” produced by comedian Kevin Hart and filmed in Syracuse, is described as a coming-of-age comedy about two best friends, Jess (Gentry) and Hannah (Lester), who made a pact at age 13 to have the perfect senior prom. According to the official synopsis, both of them break up with their dates just before the prom and must find new dates to live out their middle-school fantasies.

The cast includes JT Neal (“Bless This Mess”), Jordan Buhat (“Grown-ish”), Zión Moreno (“Gossip Girl”), Terry Hu (Disney’s “Zombies 3″), John Michael Higgins (”Best in Show,” “Pitch Perfect”) and comedienne Chelsea Handler (“Chelsea Lately”). Kim O. Nguyen (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) directs from a script written by D.J. Mausner (“Baroness Von Sketch Show”).
