Welcome to World Croc Day!
World Croc Day is "a global awareness campaign to highlight the plight of endangered crocodiles and alligators around the world." Crocodiles and alligators are celebrated and there is hope the day will encourage people to get involved in helping them. World Croc Day was organized by the Crocodile Research Coalition in conjunction with the Belize Zoo. During past celebrations, events have been held at the zoo and the day has been marked around the world.
While the holiday takes on the name of crocodiles, it is for alligators as well. This makes sense, as the animals are similar in a number of ways. They both are large reptiles from the order Crocodilia that have short legs, powerful tails, long snouts, and bony-plated backs. But they have differences, too, and there are ways to tell them apart. One of the most notable differences is their snouts: alligators have broad and rounded U-shaped ones, while those of crocodiles are narrow and pointed like a V. When alligators have their mouths shut, their bottom teeth can't be seen. But when crocodiles close their mouths, some of their bottom teeth are visible. There tends to be a color difference between the two reptiles. Alligators are gray or black, while crocodiles tend to look more olive, gray-green, or tan. Crocodiles usually live near saltwater, while alligators make their homes near freshwater. Lastly, crocodiles are more aggressive than alligators—and more likely to attack humans. Alligators usually don't attack humans unless they feel threatened.

A small number of Syracuse basketball players found success in the NBA, like Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Coleman, Sherman Douglas, Rony Seikaly and Dave Bing. An even shorter list actually made it to the NBA Finals, and the latest just broke a 70-year-old scoring record.
Oshae Brissett scored 7 points for the Boston Celtics against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night, the most points ever by a former SU basketball player in an NBA Finals game. He played the final 15 minutes of Game 4 after the Mavs blew out the Celtics, finishing with 7 points (including a 3-pointer and two free throws), 3 rebounds and a block.
It was the highest single-game scoring performance by a Syracuse University alumnus in the NBA Finals since Bill Gabor scored 4 points in Game 4 of the 1954 NBA Finals for the Syracuse Nationals, according to basketball-reference.com. Gabor averaged 3.3 points per game over four appearances in the 7-game series, which the Nats lost to the Minneapolis Lakers.
Last week, Brissett played nearly 3 minutes in Game 1, becoming the first former Syracuse basketball player to see action in the NBA Finals in 44 years. Marty Byrnes, who played at SU from 1974-1978, was on the floor for one minute in Game 6 of the 1980 NBA Finals as his Los Angeles Lakers beat the Philadelphia 76ers for the NBA championship.

Syracuse Basketball has a relatively challenging non-conference schedule for next season. Adrian Autry's squad will have to face Tennessee in the ACC/SEC Challenge. The Volunteers lost Dalton Knect, but added Chaz Lanier, Darlinstone Dubar, and others. The Orange also play at least one of Texas/Texas Tech and Maryland- three teams close-to or inside the top-25 in college basketball.

Early on in Carmelo Anthony’s career in the National Basketball Association, his teammates made fun of him for drinking wine.
“Years ago, you didn’t see it. You was laughed at for drinking wine,” Anthony, a 10-time NBA All-Star and Syracuse basketball great, said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “Now people want to explore.”
These days, basketball stars such as Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler and Kevin Durant are all full-blown wine geeks. Hall-of-famer Dwyane Wade has his own label. The NBA’s love affair with fermented grapes has intensified to the point that ESPN chronicled the league’s “secret wine society.”
That society has become big business, too. In April, the NBA signed its first-ever wine sponsorship deal, coming to a multiyear agreement with California’s Kendall-Jackson Winery.
Anthony developed a reputation as a wine guy during his time with the Denver Nuggets, where owner Stan Kroenke owned vineyards in the Napa Valley, and had more than a little influence over the beverage’s rise in cachet among pro basketball players over the course of his 19-year career.
Anthony and his longtime business partner Asani Swann have a wine label called VII(N) The Seventh Estate that launched in 2022. It’s now reaching into the higher-end sector, with a label called Ode to Soul that costs $275 per bottle. It’s the debut product of a new multiyear partnership with Constellation Brands Inc.’s Robert Mondavi Winery. The red wine is a blend of cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot.

Hochul views demo work at former state complex in Syracuse being developed into housing (PS; $; Boyer)
Gov. Kathy Hochul is stopping in Syracuse this afternoon to highlight progress at a state-funded project that’s transforming an abandoned 600,000-square-foot complex into hundreds of affordable apartments and townhomes.
The governor is bringing attention to the recently started demolition of the former Syracuse Developmental Center on the city’s West Side. A Long Island developer has an agreement with the city of Syracuse to acquire the South Wilbur Avenue site and building a mixed-use campus that will include 500 units of affordable, market-rate, workforce and senior housing.
Construction will likely start in 2025, following demolition and site preparation work that’s being done this year by the city. Hochul has committed up to $29 million in state funding to help, funding she agreed to provide at the request of Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh. The Walsh administration moved to acquire the long-vacant site five years ago with the goal of removing a massive neighborhood blight and creating new economic development opportunities.
The demolition contract awarded earlier this spring to low-bidder Utica-based Ritter & Paratore Contracting Inc. was for $10.2 million, leaving considerable funds to prepare the site for Long-Island-based Long Island-based Albanese Organization Inc.’s $100 million plan to build a multi-building complex with 440 apartments and 60 to 85 townhouse units. The city’s prep work includes building new water and sewer lines, access roads, sidewalks, landscaping and street lighting along site access roads.
The SDC site has been vacant and falling apart for about two decades. The state shut down client services there in 1998. Multiple private sector owners came along after that with redevelopment plans that fell through. The city obtained the property through tax foreclosure in 2019 and later sought redevelopment proposals, leading to the agreement with Albanese.

First heat advisory issued for Central NY; air could feel like triple digits (PS; $; Alba)
After a mild weekend, temperatures are expected to take a sharp turn starting Monday.
The National Weather Service issued its first heat advisory for Central New York this year. It’s in effect from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday evening. The mix of heat and humidity could make it feel like it’s 104 degrees during the worst stretch of the heat wave.
The advisory was issued for most of Upstate New York, including Onondaga, Oneida, Cortland, Madison, Yates, Chenango and Broome counties.
The hotter temperatures in Syracuse starts Monday with a high of 93 degrees. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be in the high 90s, a hot streak that has never happened before in Syracuse in the month of June.
But humidity will make the air feel even hotter than 100 degrees during the heat wave, according to the weather service.
Daily high temperature records could be broken each day of the heat advisory this week, with temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday expected to be 2 degrees higher than the record for those dates. The current forecasted high of 96 for Thursday would match the record.
Normal highs in mid June are in the upper 70s, and lows are in the upper 50s.
The heat wave led the Syracuse City School District to cancel afternoon classes on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for most students. Schools are closed Wednesday for Juneteenth.
