Welcome to National Barcode Day!

National Barcode Day on June 26 commemorates more than 40 years of efficiency and accuracy that began on June 26, 1974, when a clerk scanned a 10-pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum at a Marsh supermarket in Troy, OH. On that day, the barcode system invented by George Lauer, an IBM engineer, began to change the world.

#NationalBarcodeDay

Since then, barcodes have been revolutionizing industries all over the world. Barcodes, also known as UPC, 1 Dimensional (1D) codes, contain data that help businesses and organizations do their jobs more easily. A more modern version of the barcode is called a QR code, or a 2 dimensional (2D) code. The QR code contains even more data than the 1D code.

NBA draft primer: Will Mintz get drafted? Will Grant be traded? (PS; $; Waters)

The last Syracuse player to be taken in the NBA draft was Elijah Hughes in 2020. Will Judah Mintz snap the three-year run in this year’s draft?

The NBA, taking a page out of the NFL’s playbook, will hold its annual draft over two days for the first time this year with the first round on Wednesday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the second round on Thursday.

Mintz, a 6-foot-3 guard, had entered his name in the NBA’s 2023 draft, but ultimately decided to return to Syracuse for his sophomore year.

Mintz entered the draft again this year a successful 2023-24 season that saw him average 18.8 points, 4.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

It appears that Mintz is something of a long shot to be drafted. His name does not appear in most of the major mock drafts, including those at ESPN.com, Yahoo, The Ringer and NBADraft.net.

However, Mintz seems to be hovering just outside several of those mock drafts and would need just one team with a pick in the second round to like him better than the mock draft consensus to take him from an undrafted free agent to a second-round pick.

ESPN draft expert Jonathan Givony ranks Mintz at No. 81 on his Top 100 prospects.

Mintz participate in the G-League combine in Chicago. According to reports, he has worked out with the Orlando Magic and the Boston Celtics in the weeks leading up to the draft.

Grant could impact the draft

Jerami Grant just finished the first year of a five-year, $160 million deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. But the former Syracuse forward could be on the move prior to the draft.

Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports recently reported the Los Angeles Lakers have their No. 17 overall pick available in trade discussions. And Grant, the 10-year NBA veteran, could be a player on the Lakers’ wish list.

Grant averaged 21 points and made 40% of his 3-point attempts this past season. He would give Los Angeles a solid third option to go with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. But is Portland willing to part with him? And at what price?

4-star PG, who eyes Syracuse basketball visit, has new D.C. home, shines at Nike camp (itlh; Adler)

Anthony Brown, who received a scholarship offer from Syracuse basketball last August, is catching the attention of college coaches, national analysts and scouts for his performances of late on the AAU circuit and at other showcase events.

Yet the 2026 four-star point guard from the talent-rich Washington, D.C., market remains vastly under-rated in his class, from my perspective.

This week, the 6-foot-1 Brown is one of several Orange recruiting targets in the 2026 cycle who are suiting up at the prestigious Nike Elite 100 Camp, an annual event held in St. Louis.

On Tuesday, I came across various comments from analysts and scouts, including 247Sports national basketball director Eric Bossi, praising Brown for his play at the Nike Elite 100 Camp.

Currently, several recruiting services have Brown in the top 150 nationally and in the top 20 at point guard within the rising high school junior class, but let me be clear: Anthony should reside, at a minimum, in the top 100 overall of the 2026 cycle.

Syracuse basketball has recently reached out to 2026 four-star point guard Anthony Brown.

Brown picked up a scholarship offer from the 'Cuse in late August of 2023, around the time that he competed in the Orange's annual Elite Camp. His offer sheet to date also includes schools such as Saint Joseph's, Providence, George Mason and Norfolk State.

Syracuse men’s basketball: final 2024 NBA Draft projections for Judah Mintz (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

With the 2024 NBA Draft this week, several former Syracuse Orange men’s basketball players will hope to hear their name called and make the jump to the pros.

Much like how it was back in April, most of the current round of mock drafts project Judah Mintz to not be selected in this year’s draft. Despite looking like a fringe second round selection in the weeks leading up the 2023 draft, Mintz’s stock appears to be lower this time around. However, it isn’t over until it’s over, and a few of the mock drafts have Mintz still in the running to be in the top-58.

Notably, the latest big board from Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer (last updated on Friday) has Mintz at No. 61 overall among the class of 2024 prospects. O’Connor laid out Mintz’s well-known strengths (crafty finisher, improved playmaking, blend of athleticism and finesse in two-point territory) in addition to his equally as well-known weaknesses (namely his poor outside shooting and reliance on foul drawing).

In 2023-24, Mintz averaged 18.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game in what was an All-ACC second team campaign for the second-year guard. On the court, Mintz built off his first year with Syracuse by taking on a larger role within the team’s offense. Throughout this past season, Mintz showed signs of improvement with more usage (especially as the primary initiator) while retaining some of the skills which made him an intriguing NBA draft prospect.

Mintz’s limitations in the context of this draft continue to make his general stock lean more to him being a borderline top-60 prospect in the absolute best-case scenario.

The outside jumper — specifically the lack of it — remains Mintz’s biggest hurdle. He shot just 28.2% from three on under three attempts per game this past season. In his two-year collegiate career at Syracuse, he shot a combined 29.3% from three on just 151 total attempts.

Of course, Mintz’s inconsistent jumper isn’t the end-all, be-all. However, in the context of his style of play, it kind of is.

Mintz relied a lot on getting to the foul line, especially last year. He averaged 8.3 free throw attempts per game in 2023-24, up from 5.8 in 2022-23. Last season, 202 of Mintz’s 602 points scored (or about 33.5%) came from the foul line. It’s hard to say that will translate well at the NBA level, especially if the jumper doesn’t take a step forward.

Former Syracuse University forward Preston Shumpert (3) was hired to take over the Liverpool boys basketball program on Monday night. Syracuse.com file photo

Former Syracuse University hoops star chosen to take over Liverpool boys basketball program (PS; $; McClendon)

It seemed almost inevitable that another former Syracuse University men’s basketball great would be next in line to take over the Liverpool boys basketball program.

On Monday night, the Liverpool school board approved former Orange forward Preston Shumpert as the school’s next head varsity basketball coach.

He takes over a program that up until earlier this year was led by another Syracuse great, Ryan Blackwell, since 2015.

After nine years of building the program into a five-time Section III champion and a state champion in 2018, Blackwell decided to leave Liverpool to take an assistant position on Gerry McNamara’s staff at Siena College near Albany.

Shumpert, who works as a teaching assistant in the Liverpool district, has served as a head freshman and junior varsity coach, as well as an assistant varsity coach under Blackwell.

“He’s extremely familiar with these players, first of all,” Liverpool athletic director Ari Liberman said. “He is extremely familiar with the way that we run our programs at Liverpool and Preston has an elite IQ for the game. He and Ryan have been close since Preston’s college visit to Syracuse. He stayed with Ryan, and then they were roommates.”

Shumpert will now have some big shoes to fill, but his experience as a coach, as well as a star college and professional player, should help him continue the winning tradition at Liverpool.

Axe: Lampkin will wear No. 44 for SU basketball (and that’s OK) (PS; $; Axe)
Eddie Lampkin wore the No. 44 as a basketball player at the University of Colorado and is set to wear it for the Syracuse University men’s basketball team for the upcoming 2024-25 season.

That should be noted as a simple transaction, but nothing is simple when it comes to the 44 at Syracuse, where the number has become a bedtime story.

Orange legend Derrick Coleman on Tuesday expressed his displeasure at his old number being assigned to Lampkin.

“I am not surprised by John Wildhack @CoachRedAutry & his staff. [Orange] Nation this is why it’s such a disconnect between the university and it’s legends Coach Boeheim would have never did that stop watering down the legacy of #44,” Coleman wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Coleman’s opinion on the matter needs proper mulling.

He would have a stronger point if the 44 was retired at Syracuse for basketball.

Instead, it hangs as one of several “honored” jerseys in the upper reaches of the JMA Dome and is available to be worn by a player.

The 44 is not watered down, as Coleman suggests.

It has been collecting dust since April 1, 1996 when John Wallace last sported it for Syracuse against Kentucky in the national championship game.

While sporting an impressive resume, the 44 for SU basketball does not rise to the sacred status in football that saw the best player to play the game, first Black Heisman winner and a college and pro football Hall of Famer don it before being retired by the university in 2005.

Lampkin should certainly be made aware of the 44′s history.

Coleman, Syracuse’s second all-time leading scorer, wore it on a path that took him to being the No. 1 overall pick in the 1990 NBA Draft.

Wallace wore it on the way to become SU’s third all-time leading scorer and an NCAA Tournament run for the ages in 1996.

Danny Schayes wore it as an Orange man prior to a stellar 18-year NBA career.

Indie rock band with lascivious name to play Syracuse concert (PS; $; Herbert)

An indie rock band with a particularly lascivious name is coming to Central New York on its “Finding Your Way Home” tour dates.

The Front Bottoms will play the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse on Saturday, Sept. 14. No opening act has been named for the concert, which begins at 8 p.m.

Tickets go on sale Thursday, June 27, at 12 p.m. via Ticketmaster. Presales begin Tuesday at noon through Live Nation and Wednesday at noon via Spotify.

The band, named after a euphemism for female genitalia, released its eighth album, “You Are Who You Hang Out With,” on the record label Fueled By Ramen last summer. Their sound is described as a mix of indie rock, emo, pop-punk and folk punk. The Front Bottoms average nearly 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify with songs like “Twin Size Mattress,” “Be Nice to Me,” “Lone Star,” “Peach,” “Lonely Eyes,” “Father,” and “Lipstick Covered Magnet.”
