Welcome to Canada Day!

Canada Day celebrates the country's movement to self-government. On July 1, 1867, Canada became a self-governing Dominion of Great Britain, after the passage of the British North America Act. It also became a federation with four provinces: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec. These provinces were made from the British colonies of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the Province of Canada (previously Upper Canada and Lower Canada). The Act allowed for other provinces and territories to join the country in the future. Indeed, more land was added, and Canada now consists of ten provinces and three territories.

On June 20, 1868, the Governor General said the anniversary of Canada becoming a Dominion should be celebrated. It became a statutory holiday in 1879 and was known as Dominion Day at the time. The first official celebrations weren't held until 1917, on the Dominion's fiftieth anniversary. It began being celebrated more frequently after World War II, and even more so after the 100th anniversary in 1967. It began being called Canada Day by celebrants and has been officially known as Canada Day since 1983. This was stipulated by the Canada Act of 1982. Canada also became a fully independent country with this act, no longer being under the dominion of Great Britain.

Syracuse basketball offers 5-star Baba Oladotun, the nation's No. 1 prospect in 2027 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball coaches have officially entered the recruitment of 2027 five-star forward Baba Oladotun from the talent-rich Washington, D.C., market, who is the country's No. 1 national prospect per ESPN.

The 6-foot-9 small forward/power forward is a rising sophomore at James Hubert Blake High School in Silver Spring, Md. On the AAU circuit this spring and summer, he is running with the 15U squad of the Oxon Hill, Md.-based Team Durant in Nike's EYBL league.

It's worth noting that multiple Orange coaches, including head coach Adrian Autry, have deep recruiting ties to the Washington metropolitan region.

Oladotun disclosed his new scholarship offer from the 'Cuse staff over the weekend via his X page. Per his X account, his offer sheet also includes teams such as Michigan, Rutgers, Southern California, UCLA, Tennesse and West Virginia.

In reviewing his bio on the main recruiting Web sites, it also appears that Oladotun holds offers from squads including Bryant, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Howard and Mississippi State.

Syracuse basketball recently offered 2027 five-star forward Baba Oladotun.

While it's quite early in his recruiting process, I'm glad to see the Orange staff get into the mix for Oladotun. Players in the 2027 cycle won't be able to hear directly from college coaches until June 15 of next year, before the start of their junior seasons, so Oladotun is going to see many more offers arrive his way.

What Will Alex Kline Bring To SU? (orangefizz.net; Papillo)
The landscape of college athletics is rapidly changing, especially with the growth of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals being key factors in landing top recruits. In 2023, Duke became the first university to land a general manager for basketball, with many following suit. Last week, Syracuse joined in on the fun, inking former Knicks scout and SU graduate Alex Kline to be the new head man.

But what will Kline bring to the Orange? According to Syracuse Athletics’ official release, the general manager position will “support Coach Autry in managing various aspects of the men’s basketball program at Syracuse. The primary responsibilities will include scouting and recruiting, former student-athlete engagement, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities, transfer portal management, and institutional fundraising in collaboration with University Advancement.”

Kline graduated from Syracuse University in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast and Digital Journalism and a minor in Sports Management. After graduation, he joined the New Orleans Pelicans as a basketball operations assistant, where he focused on college scouting and player evaluation. This skillset transferred over to the Big Apple, where he was a scout for the past four seasons.

Syracuse Basketball MUST BLOW OUT Youngstown St. and Le Moyne Next Season (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Basketball recently hired Alex Kline to be its first ever General Manager. Kelly is a former scout with the New York Knicks and a basketball operations assistant with the New Orleans Pelicans. Kelly will be assiting Adrian Autry's staff with recruiting and NIL opportunities. The Orange also added Youngstown St. to its non-conference schedule, and are also rumored to be playing Le Moyne next season.Jackson Holzer tells you why he likes the GM hire and why he likes the new non-cons added to the schedule on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

TNIAAM Reacts: Syracuse football fans want the 90s back (TNIAAM; Wall)

This week we asked Syracuse Orange fans about football uniforms and alums in the NBA next season. Let’s check out the results:

It was a pretty close vote, but more of you want to see the Orange go back to the uniform look from the 90s. Plain orange helmets and numbers on the pants are your vibe. Would the uniform bring back the on-field success from that era?

Maybe we should ask if people would prefer Syracuse to keep the current look or go full-Oregon with different combinations each week...

Once again no Syracuse men’s basketball players were selected in the NBA Draft, and most of you expect the number of alums who play in the 24-25 NBA season to decrease. My take is that most of you expect that only Jerami Grant and Oshae Brissett will see action and that’s not making Buddy Boeheim and Cole Swider feel appreciated.

Jesse Edwards signed a two-day with Minnesota so there’s another alum in the mix as we head into the Fall. Will Jesse be able to overcome the Syracuse-Minnesota jinx?

Former Syracuse basketball player Buddy Boeheim waived by Detroit Pistons (report) (PS; Waters)

The Detroit Pistons have waived former Syracuse basketball player Buddy Boeheim from his two-way contract with the team, according to reports on Saturday.

Boeheim had one year remaining on a two-way deal that he signed with Detroit back in February.

Boeheim, who played at Syracuse from 2018 to 2022, spent the last two seasons with the Pistons’ organization. He split his time between Detroit and the team’s G-League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise.

Keith Smith, an NBA reporter with Spotrac, first reported the news of Boeheim’s release.

As a rookie in the 2022-23 season, Boeheim played in 18 G-League games and 10 games with Detroit while on a two-way contract. The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 12.1 with the Motor City Cruise, making 37.4% of his 3-point shots. In his limited time in Detroit, Boeheim averaged 1.6 points per game.

Former Syracuse guard Joe Girard signs summer league deal with NBA team (PS; Waters)

Former Syracuse basketball player Joe Girard will play for the Toronto Raptors’ entry in the NBA’s 2024 Summer League in Las Vegas.

Girard, who spent this past season at Clemson, will join the Raptors when the NBA Summer League starts on July 12. The league runs through July 22.

Girard, a 6-foot-1 guard, played at Syracuse for four years from 2019 to 2013. He scored 1,652 points in his four years with the Orange. As a senior in the 2022-23 season, Girard averaged a career-high 16.4 points per game.

Girard had a fifth year of eligibility thanks to the NCAA’s decision to grant all athletes an extra year of eligibility if they played through the Covid-impacted 2020-21 season.

Girard transferred to Clemson for his final year of eligibility. He scored 15.1 points per game for the Tigers and made 41% of his 3-point shots. Clemson went 11-9 in the ACC, but earned an NCAA tournament bid and advanced to the Elite 8 before losing 89-82 to Alabama.

Sky Zone in its new location in Clay, NYProvided photo

Sky Zone to hold grand opening at its new Onondaga County location (PS; $; Doran)

Sky Zone has moved from DeWitt to Clay and is holding a grand opening starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The trampoline park opened in the former Sears building at Great Northern Mall June 13 with a variety of new attractions, along with its signature trampolines. Basketball and soccer courts, a giant tower with two slides, a zipline, trapeze/swing, interactive screens, a Ninja wall, tug of war and dodgeballs are among the attractions.

The new location is much larger than the previous one in what’s known as the Hechinger Plaza off Erie Boulevard East in DeWitt, said Pam Tuohey, general manager and one of the owners. There are eight party rooms for kids’ birthday parties, she said.

“It’s so much bigger, and we are excited about the what the future holds for this location,” she said.

The now-closed Great Northern Mall is being developed into a giant housing/retail center near the Micron site.

Tuohey said the DeWitt Sky Zone closed at the end of April but work to install the attractions had started prior to that.

The entertainment center is open seven days a week, and employs about 40 people in the summer, and 60 to 70 during the winter, Tuohey said.

There will be giveaways and prizes at the event Saturday, she said.

This image from the U.S. Geological Survey shows the impact of a 3.4-magnitude earthquake recorded June 28, 2024, at 11:45 p.m. ET. The small quake was felt throughout Upstate New York, including the Syracuse area.USGS

3.4-magnitude earthquake shakes Upstate NY, including Syracuse area (PS; Herbert)

Did you feel a rumble in the middle of the night? Yep, that was a small earthquake.

A 3.4-magnitude earthquake shook parts of Upstate New York, including the Syracuse area, around 11:45 p.m. ET Friday (3:45 a.m. UTC), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was centered in Lake Ontario, about 9 miles outside of Henderson in Jefferson County and 50 miles north of Syracuse.

According to the USGS, the earthquake was felt in parts of Canada, Central New York and Northern New York, with reports from Syracuse, Oswego, Fulton, Watertown, Fort Drum, Rochester and the Utica/Rome area. Some said they even felt tremors near Buffalo and Albany, as far as 140 miles from the epicenter.

No damage or injuries have been reported.

The USGS says earthquakes of 3 or 4 on the Richter scale are considered small and unlikely to have a significant impact. The Richter scale measures the amount of energy released in an earthquake, which happens when tectonic plates below ground abruptly slip past each other.

The Richter scale ranges from 1 to 10. That scale is logarithmic, so every step is 10 times more powerful than the last. For example, an earthquake measuring 6 on the scale is 10 times more powerful than one measuring 5.

In April, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake in New Jersey rattled much of the northeast, including Upstate New York, but caused little damage. Large quakes are uncommon in the region, but the geology of the northeast reportedly makes it more likely that they’ll be felt over a wider area than a similar magnitude along fault lines in the western U.S.

Oneida Indian Nation opens big new community center and box lacrosse arena (PS; $; Cazentre)

The Oneida Indian Nation today opens what it describes as one of the largest tribal community centers in the United States, intended as a “gift to future Oneida generations.”

The 90,000-square foot Mary C. Winder Community Center features areas for cultural and language programming and education, community gatherings, a library, historical exhibits, a gym and swimming pool. It also includes a field house that boasts a regulation box lacrosse field.

The community center is at 1 Windfall Way, just off Route 46 about three miles south of the city of Oneida in eastern Madison County. It is near the nation’s existing Shako:wi Cultural Center, which will continue to offer exhibits on the Oneidas’ history and culture.

The new community center is intended primarily for use by the roughly 1,000 enrolled members of the Oneida Indian Nation, but will also on occasion host special events and programs that will be open to the public, said Joel Barkin, the nation’s vice president for communications.

Next week, on July 6 and 7, the field house will bring in the Haudenosaunee Nationals women’s box lacrosse team for two practice sessions. The team will also offer a girls box lacrosse camp on July 6 for Oneida Indian Nation members and their children, clients of the Oneida Indian Nation Health Services and other members of the nation community.

On Thursday, Ray Halbritter, the Oneidas’ representative and top leader, hosted U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland for a tour of the new community center. Haaland, who also met with leaders from other Haudenosaunee nations, is the highest ranking federal official to ever visit the Oneida homelands. She is also the first Native American to hold a position as a cabinet secretary.
