Welcome to Ice Cream Sundae Day!

Ice cream sundaes—which are ice cream desserts with one or more scoops of ice cream with sauces or syrups, often with other toppings such as fruits, maraschino cherries, nuts, sprinkles, and whipped cream—are enjoyed on National Ice Cream Sundae Day. The "classic" ice cream sundae has vanilla ice cream topped with a flavored sauce or syrup, such as chocolate or strawberry, as well as whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Some variations of the sundae include the banana split, knickerbocker glory, turtle sundae, and tin roof sundae. Sundaes are also often topped with heated sauces or syrups such as hot fudge, butterscotch, and caramel.

Different places say they are where the ice cream sundae was invented but Ithaca, NY has the earliest documented proof. Upstate NY has invented most of the best things in life.

The Bahamas, the Cinderella story in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying tournament, fell one game short of earning a trip to the 2024 Paris Olympics with an 86-78 loss to Spain in Valencia on Sunday.

Bahamas, whose roster included Syracuse-bound freshman Donnie Freeman, entered the Olympic Qualifying tournament ranked 57th in the world. But the underdog team defeated three straight higher-ranked foes to advance to the final against home-standing Spain, which is FIBA’s No. 2-ranked team.

Spain, featuring former NBA center Willy Hernangomez, proved to be too much for the Bahamas. The home favorites went 23-for-25 at the free throw line, while Bahamas managed just 13 makes on 15 attempts. Hernangomez put up 15 points and seven rebounds.

Buddy Hield, who recently joined the Golden State Warriors, scored 19 for the Bahamas. DeAndre Ayton, of the Portland Trail Blazers, added 17 points.

Freeman, a 6-foot-10 forward out of Washington D.C., did not play in Sunday’s championship game. Freeman made just one appearance in the Bahamas’ four games in Valencia.

It was the first time in the country’s history that the Bahamas had made it to the championship game of an Olympic Qualifying tournament. The Bahamas’ run to the final included wins over No. 20 Finland, No. 15 Poland and No. 28 Lebanon.

Syracuse basketball freshman Donnie Freeman and his Bahamas team advance in FIBA tournament (PS; Waters)

Donnie Freeman and his Bahamas team defeated Lebanon 89-72 Saturday in Valencia, Spain, and are one win away from playing in the Paris Olympics.

But Spain, the host team and the No. 2 ranked FIBA-ranked team in the world, stands in the Bahamas’ way. Spain held off a strong challenge from Finland for an 81-74 win on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s final. Willy Hernangomez, a veteran of seven seasons in the NBA, led Spain with 28 points on Saturday.

Just one team emerges from each Olympic Qualifier location. The final that determines which team qualifies from Valencia is scheduled for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Bahamas beat Lebanon Saturday with 24 points and 15 rebounds from Deandre Ayton and 19 points from Buddy Hield. Freeman did not get into the game.

The Bahamas, ranked 57th in the world by FIBA, has been on a remarkable run through the Spain qualifying draw and has not lost a game in the tournament. The Bahamas has beaten No. 20 Finland, No. 15 Poland and No. 28 Lebanon.

Who were the oldest and youngest Syracuse basketball players ever taken in the NBA draft? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

The NBA’s annual draft was held last week and even though no Syracuse player was selected during the two-day event, we still get a draft-related question to lead off this week’s Mike’s Mailbox.

We’ve also got questions about whether Syracuse needs to add some frontcourt depth heading into the 2024-25 season and another about the relevance of walk-ons.

It’s an interesting selection of questions, so let’s get right to them.

(If you have a question for the Mailbox, email it to mwaters@syracuse.com).

Q: Jesse Edwards was the oldest eligible player in this year’s NBA draft. Who was the oldest and who was the youngest Syracuse player drafted?

Bill N.

Mike:
Jesse Edwards, the former Syracuse center, used his extra year of eligibility to play at West Virginia this past season. Edwards wasn’t taken in the NBA draft, but he has signed a two-way deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves and is expected to play for the club in the NBA’s Summer League.

Edwards was 24 years and 3 months old at the time of the NBA draft.

The oldest Syracuse player ever taken in the NBA draft was Billy Gabor. Gabor played at Syracuse as a freshman in 1942-43. He then missed the next two seasons while serving in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He returned to SU and played three more seasons from 1945 to 1948.

Syracuse basketball target Acaden Lewis has seen his recruitment and rankings soar. He should be 5 stars and the No. 1 PG. / Reggie Hildred-USA TODAY Sports

Syracuse Basketball: As blue-bloods pursue, Acaden Lewis should be 5 stars, No. 1 PG (itlh; Adler)

It's proven quite a tremendous last couple of months for Syracuse basketball 2025 target Acaden Lewis, a fast-rising four-star point guard from Washington, D.C.

He was excellent as a junior for his high school in our nation's capital. But then starting in the spring, the 6-foot-3 Lewis began to capture the attention of national analysts and scouts alike for his play on the AAU circuit and at other showcase events.

This, in turn, has resulted in college coaches galore pursuing him. Lewis' offer sheet currently stands at around 30, and all of the sport's blue-blood programs have offered him of late.

For the 'Cuse, its coaching staff continues to recruit Lewis hard, although competition is growing by leaps and bounds. If we turn to the subject of 2025 national rankings, well, Lewis in recent weeks has seen his ratings skyrocket just about as much as anyone in the rising senior class.

Syracuse basketball is in a recruiting battle for 2025 four-star point guard Acaden Lewis.

The Orange staff offered a scholarship to Lewis in late April. Just since the beginning of June, per recruiting Web sites, Lewis has hauled in offers from squads such as two-time defending national champion UConn, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami, Tennessee, Indiana and Auburn, among others.

That's. Impressive.

Expert praises Syracuse basketball for aggressive, consistent 2025 recruiting efforts (itlh; Adler)

In late May, Syracuse basketball got off to a stellar start in its 2025 class when five-star forward and top-20 national prospect Sadiq White Jr. from Charlotte, N.C., verbally committed to the Orange over six other finalists.

It's super early on in the 2025 cycle, but the decision by the 6-foot-8 White to head to Central New York gave the 'Cuse, at the time of this writing, a top-10 national class at this stage in the game, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

White, in various interviews discussing his college choice, noted that for a long while, 'Cuse coaches have made him feel like a top priority in the 2025 class. Beyond his two unofficial visits so far to the Hill, the Syracuse basketball staff has watched White in many settings, whether on the AAU circuit, at other showcases, or during his play in high school.

That kind of consistent pursuit seemed to have won White over, and that theme is also something a top national analyst noted in a recent article as he praised the Orange's recruiting efforts in the rising senior cycle.

Syracuse basketball continues to recruit numerous other 2025 prospects hard.

As I've said on many occasions, per recruiting services, the 'Cuse staff has offered scholarships to more than 20 prospects in the rising senior class. These days, though, Orange coaches are honing in on a smaller group of 2025 targets.

It's difficult to gauge at this time just how large in size the team's 2025 class at the high school level will end up being, due to guys potentially leaving the program, and coming on board at the 'Cuse, via the transfer portal before 2025 players would begin their college careers.

Regardless, landing White is a strong beginning, and I'm highly confident that Syracuse basketball will add several more prep commits in 2025 when all is said and done.

To that end, in a recent roundtable on , national analysts debated several topics. One of them examined which college program has impressed these experts the most with the early work it has put forth in the 2025 cycle.

Syracuse Basketball Adds At Least One Cupcake to its Non-Con Schedule | Syracuse Basketball Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Basketball has added Youngstown State to its 2024-25 non-conference schedule, according to College Hoops Bracketologist/Analyst Rocco Miller. The Orange are also rumored to be adding Le Moyne too.Jackson Holzer tells you why it's perfect the Cuse is adding these schools to its schedule.

Syracuse Legend Carmelo Anthony Makes a Distressing UConn Admission in Front of Kemba Walker (essentiallysports.com; Pande)

Retirements are hard. Kemba Walker was all over the internet when he announced his retirement on Tuesday. He had an impressive career ever since being drafted in 2011 by the Charlotte Hornets (then-Charlotte Bobcats). However, in this river of nostalgia, there was one fact that would have cheered Walker when he made an appearance on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast with Carmelo Anthony and The Kid Mero.

On the podcast, the 34-year-old talked about everything from how Michael Jordan mentored him to his NCAA Championship-winning campaign in 2011 with the University of Connecticut. As interesting as taking a trip down Walker’s memory lane was, one revelation by Carmelo Anthony caught everyone’s attention. That was when the former Nuggets man revealed the one team he could “never beat.”

“I can’t beat UConn. I remember we lost to UConn three times,” Anthony stated on the 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast. Notably, Anthony played for Syracuse from 2002-2003, and that year, he started all 35 games, averaging 22.2 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 1.6 steals. He may have led the team to its only NCAA Championship in 2003, dropping 33 points in the Final Four and a double-double in the title game. But on the road to the title, Anthony couldn’t emerge on the winning side against UConn.

Syracuse has been famous for its rivalry against UConn, which was prevalent from 1979 to 2013. The competition peaked as two Hall of Famer coaches – Jim Boeheim and Jim Calhoun – were part of the teams. In the 2002-2003 season, Syracuse played the Huskies twice (even though he said thrice) and lost both. In the first game in early February, the Orange lost by a 75-61 margin. And in their second encounter in mid-March, the Huskies trumped their rivals 80-67.

That season, for his efforts in the NCAA Tournament (especially his 20 points and 10 rebounds in the finals), Carmelo Anthony got the Most Outstanding Player Award. In fact, head coach Boeheim even said that Anthony was “by far, the best player in college basketball. It wasn’t even close. Nobody was even close to him last year in college basketball.” Despite that storied one year in Syracuse, the only thing that still hurts him is his losses to the Huskies, so much so that he admitted to hating them.

Earlier in the podcast, when Anthony, Walker, and The Kid Mero discussed jerseys and kits, the Syracuse legend exclaimed, “I’m a UConn hater,” adding, “I never beat UConn. Never.” Listening to that, even though Walker played for UConn from 2008-2011, Anthony’s true admission came as a moment of pride for Walker, especially because he was the one to lead the Huskies to the 2011 championship title. That said, overall, the Orange leads the series 56-39, and despite Anthony losing both games, Syracuse has proved its mettle as a formidable opponent against UConn.

Syracuse men’s basketball: Cole Swider returns to Miami Heat for Summer League (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

Syracuse Orange alumni continue to get chances to prove themselves in the upcoming NBA Summer League. The latest candidate hoping to crack a pro roster is forward Cole Swider, who returns to the Miami Heat organization for a second year.

Swider has spent the past two seasons on two-way contracts, first with the Lakers and more recently the Heat.

Part of the 2023-24 campaign (December-March) was spent with Miami's G-League affiliate in Sioux Falls, where Cole averaged 24.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists while shooting over 50% from the field. He also appeared in 18 games for the parent club, averaging about five minutes and shooting 15/38 (10/30 on 3s).

Other Syracuse alumni competing in the Summer League include Judah Mintz (Sixers), Buddy Boeheim (Thunder), Jesse Edwards (Timberwolves) and Joe Girard (Raptors). Swider recently caught up with two of his former SU teammates prior to them inking their first Association tryouts:

Additionally, defending champion Oshae Brissett has been linked to several teams, including a possible reunion with the Celtics.

Best of luck to these Orange grads as they continue to pursue their professional careers.

Syracuse amphitheater’s most expensive concert is sold out: See cheapest tickets you can get (PS; Herbert)

Post Malone’s sold-out homecoming concert is the most expensive in Syracuse amphitheater history, and fans can still get tickets if they’re willing to pay up.

The “I Had Some Help” singer will perform at the Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater at Lakeview on Saturday, Sept. 14. No opening act has been named for the concert, which will begin at 8 p.m.

Tickets went on sale Monday morning and were gone quickly. The lawn and pit are both completely sold out, and less than 10 standard (non-Platinum) pavilion seats are still available through Live Nation, ranging in price from $402.60 to $1,123.20.

But you can still get tickets through Live Nation’s Verified Fan Resale program or through resellers like VividSeats, StubHub, TicketNetwork or SeatGeek. Some are listed as high as $5,563 (including fees) due to high demand.

Here are the cheapest tickets available as of 8 a.m. Tuesday:

  • Live Nation Verified Fan Resale starting at $392.19 for pavilion (including fees)
  • VividSeats starting at $185.53 for lawn, $356.05 for pavilion (including fees)
  • StubHub starting at $189 for lawn, $365 for pavilion (including fees)
  • TicketNetwork starting at $214.84 for lawn, $421.82 for pavilion (including fees)
  • SeatGeek starting at $177 for lawn, $341 for pavilion (including fees)
Note: Prices and availability are subject to change. Outside lawn chairs will not be allowed for the concert.

Post Malone tickets are more expensive than any previous concert at the Syracuse amphitheater, including Shania Twain’s sold-out performance in 2023. Six years ago, Luke Bryan was the first artist to price all pavilion seats at $100 or more for the venue; his $39 lawn seats were considered pricey at the time. By comparison, Malone’s lawn tickets sold for $90, and everything under the pavilion cost hundreds of dollars more.

Then again, this will be Malone’s first Central New York concert since a 2015 performance at Syracuse University when he was an up-and-coming rapper best known for the breakout single, “White Iverson.”

Party in the Square returns to downtown Syracuse (photos) (PS; photo Gallery; Schild)

Clinton Square was brought to life by live music, food trucks and adult beverages on Friday night.

Party in the Square returned, on Fridays this year, with its free entertainment to celebrate the end of the work week. The party continues July 12 and 19 and Aug. 2, 9 and 16. The headliner on Aug. 16 is the alt-rock band Sponge, known for their hit “Plowed” from their first studio album in 1994, “Rotting Pinata.”

There is a lot of controversy on where the ice cream sundae was invented and I am kind of hoping to hear from some irate person from Illinois or Wisconsin.

But the first documented proof of someone selling an ice cream sundae comes from Ithaca NY. So I have to give to to them.

Also, the Wisconsin guy Berner would have only been 16 or 17 when he alledgely invented the sundae was the owner of a soda fountain. Extremely unlikely a kid 16 or 17 would own a business like that. And in his obituary, the date he claimed he invented the sundae was published as 1899. Sounds like people found out when it really was invented (in Ithaca) and lied to retain their bogus claim. For shame Wisconsin. For shame.
