Welcome to National Kitten Day!

National Kitten Day celebrates kittens and highlights the plight of those that are homeless in an effort to save as many as possible through adoption. It was created in 2012 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige as an adjunct holiday to National Cat Day, and it was first held the following year. For its first two years, it was celebrated in December, but it was then moved to July. For a few years in the mid-2010s, it was sponsored by BLUE Naturally Fresh Cat Litter, which appears to have been a collaboration between The Blue Buffalo Company and Naturally Fresh cat litter.

There are usually two to five kittens in a litter, but there can be as few as one kitten, or even more than ten. They go through a long process of growth, during which they must rely on their mothers. First and foremost, they must rely on their mothers for milk. During their first few weeks, they need their mothers to stimulate them so they can urinate and defecate, as they can't release waste on their own. During their first few weeks, they also need their mothers to keep them warm, as they can't regulate their own body temperature. Kittens can open their eyes after approximately seven to ten days, but it takes until they are about ten weeks old until they can see as well as older cats.

Syracuse Basketball: Analyzing which 4-stars, 5-stars are Orange's top 2025 targets (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball coaches have offered scholarships to more than 20 high school prospects in the 2025 class, according to recruiting services.

But, these, days, the Orange staff is honing in on a smaller number of rising high school seniors. For one, 'Cuse coaches may not be actively pursuing some 2025 players who the team had initially offered.

Others may have verbally committed to other programs or not included the Orange in their final list cuts. One recent development, on that topic, came across on Monday, when 2025 four-star big man Matthew Gilhool from Philadelphia released a top seven that didn't feature Syracuse basketball. Gilhool had visited the Hill several times but is focused on other suitors.

The recruiting arena is one that ebbs and flows quite a bit, although I do have a sense of some 2025 prospects who are priority recruits for the 'Cuse at this juncture. One thing to keep in mind is that it's difficult to gauge just how large of a 2025 class the Orange might end up having at the prep level, due to the transfer portal.

Following the upcoming 2024-25 season, college players will likely depart and come into the 'Cuse program, and that might affect how many high school players Syracuse basketball ultimately brings to Central New York within its 2025 cycle.

For now, the Orange has one verbal pledge in its 2025 class. In late May, five-star forward and top-20 national prospect Sadiq White Jr. from Charlotte, N.C., verbally committed to the 'Cuse over six other finalists.

Taking a stab at which 4-star and 5-star prospects are the top 2025 targets for Syracuse basketball.
Point Guard/Combo Guard
My feeling is that the top two targets for the Orange at point guard/combo guard are four-star Acaden Lewis from Washington, D.C., and four-star Tyler Jackson from Baltimore.

Jackson officially visited the 'Cuse in late January of this year. Since offering him in late April, the 'Cuse has recruited Lewis hard, and he's said he intends to visit Syracuse basketball at some point.

Another prospect to keep an eye on is four-star Josiah Sanders from Colorado. He has received interest from the Orange and has said to analysts that he may visit the program.

Syracuse Basketball: National writer's realistic expectations for SU 4-star transfers (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball players are engaging in summer workouts as the 'Cuse begins to gear up for the 2024-25 season.

The Orange, which has significantly overhauled its roster this off-season, seeks to get back to the NCAA Tournament in the upcoming campaign following a three-year absence from the annual Big Dance.

This off-season, the 'Cuse saw seven players from its 2023-24 roster hit the transfer portal, while point guard Judah Mintz is pursuing a professional career. Conversely, five players are returning, and the Orange's 2024 recruiting class includes two high school seniors at a quartet of college transfers.

It's possible that the Syracuse basketball staff could add another player or two in the near future, with the team still having two open scholarships left for 2024-25. Either way, 'Cuse coaches have done a solid job in the transfer portal over the past few months, hauling in four college transfers who are all rated as four-star prospects by at least one recruiting service.

When you also factor in the Orange's two high school senior commits - five-star power forward Donnie Freeman from Washington, D.C., and four-star shooting guard Elijah Moore from New York City - the 'Cuse six-member 2024 cycle is currently rated No. 10 around the country, per the industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking.

Syracuse Basketball missed the cut for 2025 four-star big man Matthew Gilhool's final seven schools. The ideal replacement would be 2025 five-star big man Chris Cenac. Cenac is 6'10" 210lbs and is ranked as the 6th best player in the country on ESPN and On3. Cuse Coach Brenden Straughn recently watched the potential recruit at the FIBA U17 World Championship in Turkey.Jackson Holzer believes Chris Cenac would be a terrific get for Syracuse Basketball.
How Syracuse Basketball Pivots After Matthew Gilhool Says NO to Cuse - Chris Cenac or Asher Elson (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)
Syracuse Basketball missed the cut for 2025 four-star big man Matthew Gilhool's final seven schools. One reason why is because Gerry McNamara left the Cuse to join Sienna - GMac was the lead recruiter. Adrian Autry and his staff must pivot to 2025 five-star Chris Cenac and/or four-star Asher Elson.Jackson Holzer is surprised the Cuse wasn't in Gilhool's final cut, but isn't worried. He explains on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Syracuse men’s hoops and football hurt Directors’ Cup standings (orangefizz.net; Burstein)
It’s hard to truly define what universities are the “best” at sports. But every year since 1993 the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics tries its best to do just that with the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup. Division One schools gets points based on how their athletics teams perform, and those scores are combined for the rankings

With all 2023-24 school year NCAA championships wrapped up now, the final standings for this past year have been released, and Syracuse placed 44th. While tied for the third-highest finish ever for the Orange, it still was only the eighth-highest finish of ACC schools.

Some Syracuse sports, like Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Cross Country and Field Hockey, brought in high point totals to boost up the standings. Syracuse finished with 538 points, which are obtained by postseason qualification and performance. But of all those points, only 25 came from two of Syracuse’s marquee programs – football and men’s basketball.

Of the ten teams that brought points for Syracuse, football was one, with their bowl appearance at the RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl.

But a crushing defeat to South Florida would grant SU only 25 points in the Director’s Cup standings. This was tied for 53rd best among programs.

Syracuse men’s basketball was even worse. After failing to make March Madness for a third straight year and declining a NIT bid, there was no postseason play for SU. This meant no points in the standings.

Syracuse men’s basketball: Cole Swider off to hot start and Buddy faces off against Judah (TNIAAM; Wall)
Former Syracuse Orange forward Cole Swider enters this summer as a restricted free agent and his NBA career at a critical point.

Having spent the last two years on a two-contract, Swider is hoping to earn a guaranteed deal, either in Miami or with another team.

“Obviously, the Heat have my rights as a restricted free agent,” Swider said. “I want to be here. But at the same time, it’s all up to the things that I can control and I’m going to bring the energy, the effort and try to lead this summer league team to have a great summer league.”

The Heat have two open roster spots right now, but summer league also gives Swider a chance to open the eyes of other NBA teams. In his first two games in California, he’s averaging 19 points per game while shooting 56% from 3.

As the NBA puts a bigger emphasis on players who can make shots, Swider could find a role as a reserve. His ceiling depends on how he can hold up defensively, but knocking down shots at a 50%+ clip is going to give him chances to succeed.

Judah Mintz began his professional career when his Philadelphia Sixers squad faced Buddy Boeheim’s new team, the Oklahoma City Thunder in Salt Lake City. The Sixers got the win and Mintz went 3-6 from the field with 2 assists and 2 steals in 16 minutes of action.

Buddy played 9 minutes in his OKC debut and went 2-4 from 3, while adding 2 rebounds. Both former Syracuse players are back in action tonight as Philly plays Memphis and OKC faces off against the host Utah Jazz.

Syracuse startup makes $100 million acquisition to boost auto marketing biz (PS; $; Moriarty)

A fast-growing Syracuse startup founded by two former Christian Brothers Academy classmates just grew a lot more, acquiring an automotive customer engagement platform in a deal valued at more than $100 million in cash and Impel equity.

Impel, which employs 150 people in downtown Syracuse, acquired Minneapolis-based Outsell last month, creating a combined company that serves 8,000 auto dealers, Impel said in an announcement Tuesday.

Impel sells a service that enables auto dealers to post interactive 3D images of the inside and outside of their vehicles on their websites for shoppers to view. Some 6,000 auto dealers in 51 countries subscribe to the service.

Founded in 2004, Outsell employs 170 people. The company provides a digital platform that automates sales and service marketing programs at 2,000 auto dealerships in the U.S. In the last 12 months, it has delivered more than 500 million messages via text, email, direct mail and social media to 61 million consumers, according to Impel.

Impel co-founder and CEO Devin Daly told syracuse.com the company plans to integrate Outsell’s platform into its own, creating an “end to end” sales and marketing automation platform for auto dealers.

“It’s a natural extension of our product,” he said. “It moves our capabilities one step higher.”

Daly said the data that Outsell has collected over 20 years gives it insight into how consumers respond to marketing campaigns and what triggers a sale.

Outsell will remain in Minneapolis, and Impel will maintain its headquarters in Icon Tower in downtown Syracuse, Daly said. Impel is expanding its space on the second floor of the building and taking space on the first floor, he said.

Syracuse opens cooling centers, urges people to use pools, splash pads in extreme heat (PS; Hayes)

Syracuse has opened cooling centers in two community centers Tuesday amid oppressive heat, officials said.

Residents are also being encouraged to take advantage of the city’s public pools and splash pads to stay cool and safe.

Heat advisories have been issued for much of Upstate New York Tuesday with the heat index projected to hit 100 degrees in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Cooling centers will be open at the Cecile Community Center, 174 West Seneca Turnpike, and the Magnarelli Community Center, 2308 Grant Boulevard, from noon to 8 p.m., according to a news release from Mayor Ben Walsh.

The centers’ hours were increased due to heat advisories extending until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The state Health Department has an extensive list of all available cooling centers on its website.

City pools are also open from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Lincoln Park Pool is closed due to a mechanical problem, officials said.

Splash pads and spray features are also available throughout the city parks for those looking to cool off. A list of all city pools and splash pads are available on the city’s website.

The weather service warns people to try to limit activities, seek shade and drink plenty of water if people are outside during the worst of the heat.

Bridge built in Italy crosses Upstate NY via Erie Canal: See where it’s headed next (PS; Hernandez)

How do you get a massive bridge across Upstate New York?

One canal lock at a time.

A new bridge, built in Italy, has made the trek across the ocean and is now floating down the Erie Canal across the state to its new home in Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Park.

The 266-foot pedestrian bridge has spent the last year being built by international firm Cimolai at a facility in Italy, an hour north of Venice. The fabricators have a newly established presence in the Southern Tier town of Olean, Spectrum News 1 reported.

According to WKBW 7, the bridge is 22 feet wide and weighs about 220 tons. Once installed in the fall, the new bridge will be an entryway into Ralph Wilson Park across I-190 from Fourth Street.

Being able to transport this large structure by water helps avoid closing roads to traffic or navigating under low street bridges.

Carver Companies, which owns and operates the Port of Coeymans, located south of Albany, is using a tug-and-barge system to get the bridge across 34 locks along the canal.

As of this article, the bridge barge has been on the canal for five days, traveling on July 9 through Central New York with views available from Lock 20 State Canal Park in Marcy and traveling through Lock 21, New London in Rome just after 1 p.m.
