Welcome to Free Slurpee Day!

July 11 (7/11) is the unofficial birthday of the 7-Eleven store and is known as Free Slurpee Day or 7-Eleven Day. Customers who stop in a store from 7 am to 11 pm can receive a free small Slurpee. Free Slurpee Day was started in 2002, and a new flavor is featured each year on the day, although customers can choose from whatever other flavors are available at the store as well. Other food items have recently been given away on Free Slurpee Day as well, such as Big Gulps, Twinkies, and cookies.

In the late-1950s, Omar Knedlik owned a Dairy Queen in Kansas. When the soda fountain stopped working, he put some soda bottles in a freezer to keep them chilled. They were a little slushy when he opened them, and soon people started requesting them that way. He then built a machine using the air conditioning unit of a car—the machine was able to make slushy sodas out of flavored syrup, water, and carbon dioxide. The drink was named the ICEE. Working with a Dallas manufacturer, he redesigned the machine and distributed it to businesses and drugstores. The drink was licensed to 7-Eleven in 1965, and when sold there it soon became known as the Slurpee. Bob Stanford of the 7-Eleven marketing department came up with the name—he thought a slurp sound was made when sipping the drink through a straw.

Syracuse's basketball teams played at Manley Field House from 1962 to 1980, compiling a home record of 190-30.John Dowling / The Post-Standard

Individual records, homecourt records and travel records: It’s a Syracuse basketball history lesson (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; Waters)

This week’s Mailbox is more like a history lesson.

Each question involves a look back at Syracuse basketball history. What gyms has Syracuse called home and how well did the Orange fare in each? What states has Syracuse played in? Where has the Orange never played or never won?

And, then there is a look at SU’s record for the most records held by a player.

So get out your history books. This is going to be fun.

(If you have a question for the Mailbox, email it to mwaters@syracuse.com).

Q: I know Syracuse played home games at Manley Field House and the JMA Wireless Dome. But what were the other homecourts of the Syracuse basketball teams? What were the records in each venue?

Len P.

Mike:
This is a great question about Syracuse’s homecourts because it reminds us of all the old gyms that the Orange has called home.

Although the Syracuse basketball program dates back to 1900, I’m going to begin in 1908 when the university opened Archbold Gymnasium. Archbold would be the home of Syracuse basketball for nearly half a century.

Syracuse played at Archbold until a fire severely damaged the building. During Archbold’s reconstruction, Syracuse’s basketball teams played in other local arenas, including the Onondaga County War Memorial, the Jefferson Street Armory and the State Fairgrounds Coliseum.

Syracuse University’s records indicate that the Orange compiled a 343-84 (.803) record at Archbold.

Records are a bit fuzzy in terms of which games Syracuse played where during Archbold’s reconstruction.

The best I could come up with were: 49-30 (.620) at the War Memorial, 3-0 at the State Fairgrounds Coliseum and 1-1 at the Jefferson Street Armory.

Manley Field House opened in 1962, which coincided with Fred Lewis’ first year as the basketball coach. Syracuse enjoyed an incredible homecourt advantage at Manley, running up a 190-30 (.863) record between 1962 and 1980.

Since moving into the Carrier/JMA Wireless Dome for the 1980-81 season, Syracuse has won 637 games and lost 142 (.817).

Q: What U.S. states has Syracuse not won a game in?

Michael D.

Mike:
Over the 100-plus year history of the Syracuse basketball program, the Orange has traveled from Florida to Alaska and Massachusetts to Hawaii for games.

Syracuse basketball notes on Eddie Lampkin, JJ Starling, the team’s makeup and maturity (PS; Ditota)

He’s made the biggest splash of the offseason. Eddie Lampkin, the 6-foot-11, 265-pound center, was the highest-profile portal player in Syracuse’s 2024 basketball haul.

Lampkin, who began his college career at TCU before heading to Colorado last season, will provide the Orange with a playing piece it has not had in recent years: A big body who can impact the game in a variety of ways.

Lampkin was an integral part of a 26-11 Colorado squad that was a 10-seed in the NCAA Tournament last season. He averaged 10.6 points, 7 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 27.8 minutes per game.

“Big Eddie is a big personality off the court, but a hard worker,” SU coach Adrian Autry told Syracuse fans gathered at Three Heads Brewing in Rochester during an Orange-sponsored “coaches caravan” Tuesday night. “The one thing that we loved about Big Eddie is that ever since he’s been in college, he’s been a part of an NCAA Tournament team. He’s made the tournament every year and he’s contributed.

“His story is he came in over 300 pounds and got himself down to 275 and he’s been playing ever since then. He can score it around the basket. He’s a great passer and he’s improved on his outside shot.”

Next week, Autry said, will be the first time Syracuse has had its entire 2024-25 roster in the gym. By then, freshman Donnie Freeman, fresh from his experience in an Olympic Qualifier with the Bahamas national team, will arrive in town.

The Orange roster currently looks like this: JJ Starling, Chris Bell, Naheem McLeod, Kyle Cuffe, Chance Westry, Elijah Moore, Freeman, Lampkin, Jyare Davis, Jaquan Carlos, and Lucas Taylor. SU could add a player before classes start in the fall.

Autry said he and his staff sought these kinds of players in the portal:

“You gotta be a grinder. You gotta be a great teammate. You gotta be respectful and you gotta be accountable. If we can check all those boxes off, I think we’re heading in the right direction. Obviously the basketball stuff matters, too, but the biggest thing we looked for this year in bringing the guys in was what was their story?

“We got a couple guys that started off and had some failures and built their way back up, so they had a chip, they had a hunger. They knew what Syracuse was about. They were … running to be a part of this.

“Those were the things we were looking for. Who wanted to be a part of us getting back to where we all believe we should be?”

Adrian Autry on what Alex Kline brings to Syracuse program: ‘His basketball IQ is what I love’ (PS; Ditota)

Eventually, Adrian Autry believes, Alex Kline will attend events like Tuesday night, when Syracuse fans mingled with Syracuse coaches during a Matt Park-guided tour of their programs.

Autry hired Kline last week to be the Orange basketball program’s General Manager. It’s an emerging position in college basketball during this era of the transfer portal and NIL. Every team, Autry said, needs an organizer who has a firm hold on various aspects of the program.

Kline, a 2016 Syracuse graduate, is a former teenaged talent scout who spent the last eight years scouting players for the New York Knicks. He is well-known in basketball circles, a connected guy who will help Syracuse navigate the roiling waters that surround the college game circa 2024.

“His basketball IQ is what I love,” Autry said. “His basketball relationships. His intel. His knows a ton of people.”

Autry said he is “trying to build out a front office, so to speak.” College basketball staffs are shifting and growing these days (more on that Friday). This was a Syracuse step in the right direction.

Kline will be asked to maintain old relationships and cultivate new relationships. He will eventually show up and address fans at public events like Tuesday’s. Syracuse termed it a “coaches caravan,” and it included speaking roles for Autry, Felisha Legette-Jack and Fran Brown.

Kline will scout players. He will determine how much players might cost in the transfer portal and “feel all of that out,” Autry said.

“We have money,” Autry said, “but we want to use that money right. At the end of the day, you gotta have those organizers. Every school is different. What does our $10 look like? How do we spend our $10? Because you can’t make mistakes.”

Autry, too, appreciates Kline’s NBA experience. He has worked at the highest levels in the game and can impart that knowledge to the Syracuse program.

Syracuse Orange guard Chance Westry (11) gets some shots in before the game against Florida State. Westry is injured and hasn’t played at all this season. Autry updates Westry’s progress (PS; Ditota)

Chance Westry came to Syracuse last season as a promising piece to the Orange basketball puzzle.

A big guard (he’s 6-foot-6 and 190 pounds), he initially chose Auburn out of high school, but left the SEC program after one season marred by a knee injury that required preseason surgery.

He never quite made it back physically for the Tigers and after appearing in a total of 11 games, decided to transfer.

Westry, a consensus Top 40 recruit out of high school, chose Syracuse, a program that had recruited him as a prep player. But misfortune followed him here. About three weeks after he was medically cleared to participate in practice last year, Westry sustained an injury to his other knee.

Initially, the thought was he could return to the lineup at some point, but Westry never played a game for the Orange last season.

SU coach Adrian Autry addressed Westry on Tuesday night in Rochester, where a “coaches caravan” of Autry, Felisha Legette-Jack and Fran Brown spoke to Orange fans in a packed Three Heads Brewing.

“Chance has been making tremendous strides. He’s been on the court. He’s recovered after two surgeries. He’s been away from the game for two years. So, he’s improving every day,” Autry said. “He’s getting more confident. Chance is a guy that can do a lot of things, He can rebound. He can pass. He’s got great playmaking ability and he has some toughness to him.”

Autry expects to play Westry in various positions. His strength and size, plus his ability to score, facilitate and defend allows him to play point guard, shooting guard or small forward on a team where positional versatility is the goal.

“I’m just proud of what he’s done to get himself back on the court,” Autry said. “He’s still getting a little frustrated. It’s been two years and it’s gonna take some time. But he’s pushing through and working hard.”

Syracuse basketball to battle Bison, and just one non-conference game is undetermined (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball will host a long-time foe in late December, SU Athletics announced on Monday.

The Orange, coming off a 20-12 mark in the 2023-24 campaign, its first under head coach Adrian Autry, will welcome Patriot League member Bucknell to the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday, Dec. 28.

Bucknell, a school located in Lewisburg, Pa., also had a first-year head coach in the 2023-24 season, John Griffin III. Last term, the Bison went 14-19 overall and 10-8 in conference play.

This past March, as the No. 5 seed in the Patriot League's post-season tournament, Bucknell gave No. 1 seed Colgate all it could handle on the road, but the Raiders would squeak out a 68-65 victory.

The all-time series between the 'Cuse and the Bison began during the 1914-15 campaign, per SU Athletics. Syracuse basketball holds a 10-1 record against Bucknell, with the most recent pairing a 97-46 win by the Orange over the Bison on the Hill in November of 2019.

Let's review the Syracuse basketball non-conference calendar to date for next season.

With the news of the 'Cuse battling the Bison, that leaves just one non-conference contest left to be determined for the Orange in its upcoming 2024-25 season, when it will play 11 out-of-conference affairs and 20 encounters in Atlantic Coast Conference competition.

Here's what we know so far, based on press releases from SU Athletics and various media reports:

•Syracuse basketball versus Colgate at the Dome on November 12.

•Syracuse basketball versus Youngstown State at the Dome on November 16.

Syracuse Basketball recently made four-star point guard Acaden Lewis' top 8 schools. Adrian Autry and his staff are also in pursuit of big men Chris Cenac and Asher Elson plus guard Kiyan Anthony. Syracuse Football is also a final four contender for four-star CJ May and Fran Brown's squad is also in the top-16 for five-star Winston Watkins.

Danny Parkins recounts 'bucket-list thing' hosting 'The Herd' (awfulannouncing.comi; Weinstein)

Chicago radio host Danny Parkins missed a couple of afternoon shifts this week at 670 The Score.

He had a very good excuse – the popular radio personality was in Los Angeles, filling in for host Colin Cowherd on FS1’s The Herd.

Parkins, 37, returned to Chicago Wednesday and talked about his unusual opportunity, and he couldn’t hide his excitement. He shared his story with Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes on 670 The Score’s Bernstein & Holmes Show.

“It was incredible,” he said. “It was a bucket-list thing. I mean, (Herd) is one of the best sports radio hosts in the history of the medium. The show is a massive operation. Their crew is great. By far, the biggest platform that I’ve ever fronted. It was really, really cool.

“I am not going to even pretend to undersell it or be weird and self-deprecating. It was not something that I really thought was a possibility not that long ago and then it’s become a possibility and then when they said, ‘Do you want to do it?’ I immediately said ‘Yes’ and it was really dope.”

Parkins found himself in awe of The Herd‘s studio.

“It’s huge … I would say legitimately 30-plus-foot ceilings. It’s at Fox, their lot,” Parkins said. “There’s a fake town where they film movies and TV shows. The Simpsons. … Undisputed, Skip Bayless’ show is in the same room as Colin’s studio and there’s no break.”

Here’s Parkins in action on the show Monday.

Sam Vecenie from The Athletic ran down 35+ players to watch for the 2025 Draft and listed Donnie at #12. It’s headlined as a mock draft but doesn’t mention specific NBA teams and is not meant to be taken as a projection, moreso just a list of guys to get familiar with.

Said Donnie has great scoring ability and hops but his handles need work as he tends to get stuck putting up contested shots in the midrange area.
