Welcome to National Hot Dog Day!

National Hot Dog Day was started by the North American Meat Institute in 1991 and began being promoted and organized by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council after they were created by the institute in 1994. The day coincides with the Annual Hot Dog Lunch at Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., which is also sponsored by the North American Meat Institute. The lunch, which has taken place for decades, is a large hot dog picnic attended by lawmakers, administration officials, and Capitol Hill staff. The goal of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is for similar smaller events to be held around the country. Many national and local retailers have sponsored deals on the day. This holiday also takes place during National Hot Dog Month, which started in the 1950s.

Hot dogs gained in popularity in the United States in the early twentieth century, and are similar to frankfurters and wieners, which take their names from Frankfurt, Germany, and Vienna, Austria. In the United States, hot dogs were traditionally sold at hot dog stands and carts and were prominent in New York City, as well as Chicago. They have become a prominent part of American culture, and have been closely associated with baseball. Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest and the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile have also become cultural icons.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Kiyan Anthony drops 40 points at Peach Jam, set to trim list (itlh; Adler)

Kiyan Anthony, the Syracuse basketball 2025 priority target, has been on fire in recent days at the annual Peach Jam on Nike's EYBL circuit, and he's preparing to trim down the list of contenders still in the running in his recruiting process.

This spring and summer, the four-star shooting guard from New York City has proven a top performer in the EYBL's main 17U division while shining for the Baltimore-based Team Melo.

Through July 21, Peach Jam is taking place in North Augusta, S.C., with an NCAA live period coming up from July 19 to July 21. It's likely that the Orange staff will be in attendance for Anthony during the evaluation period this weekend.

Team Melo is not part of the 24-team Peach Jam field in the 17U division. Rather, it is suiting up in the Peach Invitational Tournament ("PIT"), and Anthony has been fabulous.

On Monday afternoon, Team Melo defeated the Chicago-based Mac Irvin Fire, 81-51. Per a box score on the EYBL Web site, Anthony tallied an impressive 40 points, two rebounds and one assist. He was 15-of-19 from the field and 5-of-6 from deep.

Team Melo is back in PIT action on Tuesday, and the squad is scheduled to face off against the Oklahoma-based Team Griffin beginning at 4:30 pm EST.

Syracuse Basketball 2025 Recruiting Target Kiyan Anthony UPDATE | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Basketball priority 2025 four-star recruit Kiyan Anthony is expected to cut down his list of schools to five or six next week. The Cuse is considered the front runner, according to On3's Joe Tipton. However, Ohio State, Florida State, and Indiana are heavily involved as well. Plus, it's not a big deal that Adrian Autry's squad is going through a rebuild. The Orange still got players like Donnie Freeman, Elijah Moore, and Sadiq White to commit.Jackson Holzer provides an update on Kiyan Anthony's recruitment on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Rutgers offers scholarship to Anthony: ‘I have an open mind’ (PS; Fonseca)

Rutgers has entered the race for the son of one of the greatest players in modern NBA history.

The Scarlet Knights extended an offer to Kiyan Anthony, a four-star shooting guard in the 2025 recruiting class, on Tuesday, the prospect announced Tuesday. Steve Pikiell’s program joins Syracuse, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Indiana and more on the list of teams who offered the Long Island Lutheran star.

Anthony indicated to ZagsBlog that he intends to take at least one visit to Piscataway.

“They’re close to home,” Anthony told ZagsBlog. “My guys are going there, Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey. So I’m looking forward to — I have an open mind, looking forward to just going up there one day, taking a little hour and a half job, seeing what Rutgers is talking about, even if it’s unofficial, and then take my official after. I’m looking forward to that.”

Anthony told ZagsBlog that he will be dropping a list of his top five to six schools “as soon as next week” and that he’s looking to commit before his senior season starts this winter.

“October or November,” he said.

Anthony is the son of Carmelo Anthony, the former Knicks star who retired with the ninth-most points in NBA history. A 10-time NBA All-Star, Anthony played 19 years in the NBA, last playing during the 2021-22 season with LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Why the Rebuild Hasn't Hurt Syracuse Basketball | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse; premieres at 10 AM today)

Syracuse Basketball is in a rebuild, as Kiyan Anthony stated. The Cuse failed to make the NCAA Tournament in the final two years of Jim Boeheim's career. The Orange also missed March Madness with first year head coach Adrian Autry in 2024, but did qualify for the NIT. Despite the lack of recent success, the Orange have done a nice job recruiting since Autry took over. Syracuse landed two top recruits in 2024 with Donnie Freeman and Elijah Moore. Plus, the Cuse secured five star 2025 forward Sadiq White.Jackson Holzer is not too worried about Cuse Basketball recruiting.

Syracuse men’s basketball: checking in with Orange alums playing in the 2024 NBA Summer League (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

While the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team remains on summer vacation, more than handful of alum are currently signed to rosters for the 2024 NBA Summer League.

Judah Mintz, who was not selected in the most recent NBA Draft, is the only former Syracuse player from last year’s team participating in summer league. But in total, seven former Orange earned a chance to find a home in the pros — Mintz, Joe Girard III, Jesse Edwards, Cole Swider, Buddy Boeheim, Alan Griffin and Quincy Guerrier.

With the action in Vegas still in full swing, let’s take a look at how those alum have fared so far in this year’s summer league:

Cole Swider (Miami Heat)

No questions asked: the former Orange forward remains the absolute best performer out of the seven Syracuse alums..

Yes, Cole Swider easily boasts the largest role and highest minute totals compared to the rest of the former Orange. With that said, he’s capitalized on that added playing time with his microwave scoring and flamethrower shooting from the perimeter.

In the four games Swider has played so far for the Heat, he reached 15 points or more in three of those games. He’s only had one bad game — a 1/6 shooting day versus Oklahoma City.

Outside of that, he’s continued to shoot the lights out from three. In those aforementioned three games (versus Golden State, Sacramento and Boston), he made at least four threes in those contests. He’s currently shooting nearly 49% from the floor (16/33) and 52% from three (14/27) this summer league. He was Miami’s leading scorer versus the Warriors and the second-highest against Sacramento.

26 minutes, 17 points (team-high), 4/8 shooting (4/6 from three), 5/6 free throws versus Golden State

27 minutes, 21 points (second-best on team), 7/12 shooting (5/10 from three), 2 rebounds, 1 assist, +20 (team-high) versus Sacramento

DNP (coach’s decision) versus Los Angeles Lakers

20 minutes, 15 points, 4/7 shooting (4/5 from three), 1 rebound versus Boston

15 minutes, 3 points, 1/6 shooting (1/6 from three), 4 rebounds, +21 (third-best on team) versus Oklahoma City

To make a Vegas reference: based on summer league alone, Swider has the best odds out of anyone on the Orange to secure a roster spot.

Judah Mintz (Philadelphia 76ers)

If we’re ordering this based on who’s played the best so far, Swider is clearly number-one. Who goes two remains a toss-up, but Mintz gets the edge because he’s easily had the next-best single-game performance out of anyone left on the board.

Syracuse Basketball: In NBA summer league, Judah Mintz goes off, Cole Swider been solid (itlh; Adler)
Former Syracuse basketball star Judah Mintz, on Monday, put forth his best performance thus far in the 2024 NBA summer league.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Mintz, who is from Fort Washington, Md., and played two seasons on the Hill, is suiting up during the summer league for the Philadelphia 76ers.

On Monday in Las Vegas, Philadelphia fell to Portland, 97-95, although Mintz was superb. Per a box score on the ESPN Web site, he logged 19 minutes, scoring 16 points to go along with one rebound and one steal.

Mintz was 5-of-7 from the field, 5-of-5 from the free-throw line, 1-of-1 from beyond the arc, and he had a plus/minus of +15. He and the 76ers are back in action on Tuesday night against Minnesota, with the tip-off scheduled for 8 pm and television coverage on ESPN2.

Former Syracuse basketball player Cole Swider has fared well in the NBA summer league.

Swider, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward from Portsmouth, R.I., competed for the Orange for one campaign after playing his first three seasons in college at Villanova.

Upstate Medical to offer full med school scholarships to Syracuse Say Yes graduates (PS; $; Dowty)

Upstate Medical University will begin offering full-ride scholarships to Syracuse city school district residents accepted into medical school under the city’s Say Yes to Education program.

The university announced the new state-funded scholarship Monday afternoon. The scholarship, which includes tuition and housing, plus a $5,000-a-year stipend, is valued at more than $240,000 per student over four years, the university said.

Upstate becomes the first graduate school to offer a free ride for college graduates through Syracuse’s Say Yes program.

This year, one incoming medical student was awarded the scholarship. Going forward, any Syracuse student who graduates college under Say Yes and is accepted into Upstate’s Norton College of Medicine will be offered one, the university said.

The first recipient, 2018 Henninger High School graduate Alex Guerrero, is a Syracuse resident who emigrated from Cuba. He graduated SUNY Cortland in 2022 with a Say Yes scholarship. In the past two years, Guerrero has spent 4,000 hours in research at Upstate’s post-college prep program and worked as a patient care technician at an emergency room in the Hudson Valley, the school said.

“Eliminating boundaries to higher education and employment is a most gratifying undertaking and a major focus of work as an academic medical center, as we look to prepare tomorrow’s health care workforce,” said Dr. Mantosh Dewan, president of Upstate Medical University, in a news release.

Say Yes to Education, which opened a Syracuse chapter in 2009, pays full scholarships for Syracuse graduates to attend college. The non-profit is not paying for Upstate’s medical scholarships, a spokeswoman confirmed.
