Welcome to National Sour Candy Day!

The American Licorice Company, the makers of Sour Punch brand sour candy, created National Sour Candy day "to celebrate all the tasty varieties of sour candies and to encourage everyone to give them a try." The day is marked by eating sour candy, of course. The Embrace Your Punch Tour has also sometimes been a part of celebrations.

Some sour candies have sour ingredients infused in them, while others are sweet fruit candy with an acidic coating. The coating often consists of granulated sugar infused with acid. Citric acid is the most common acid used in making sour candies, but malic acid, tartaric acid, and fumaric acid are regularly used as well. Citric acid is what is found in citric fruits, but the kind used in sour candy is commercially produced. When the sourness of a candy stays for an extended amount of time, this probably is on account of malic acid. This acid has a mellow, tart flavor, and is found in fruits like apples, cherries, and apricots.

How many SU basketball players have been in the Olympics? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; Waters)

This week’s Mailbox has a very eclectic feel. I don’t think I can remember a more varied set of questions in a single Mailbox.

From Syracuse in the Olympics, to a coaching record that Syracuse keeps adding to and, finally, Orange rookies in the NBA. It’s quite a group.

I love these questions. Our readers are the best!

(If you have a question for the Mailbox, email it to mwaters@syracuse.com).

Q: With the 2024 Summer Olympics right around the corner, I wanted to know how many Syracuse Orange players have participated in the Olympics. Here’s the list that I have so far.

Carmelo Anthony – USA (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016)

Jerami Grant – USA (2020)

Rony Seikaly – Lebanon (1984)

Michael Gbinije – Nigeria (2016)

Andrew White III – Nigeria (2020)

Leo Rautins – Canada (1984, 1992)

Am I missing anybody else?

Paul B.

Mike:
This is a very timely question as the 2024 Olympic Games are set to begin in less than two weeks.

This will be the first time since 2000 that Syracuse hasn’t had a representative on the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team.

First, I must make a couple corrections to the list in the reader’s email.

Andrew White never played for the Nigerian national team in the Olympics. Neither did Rony Seikaly ever play for Lebanon in the Olympics. In fact, Lebanon has never been in the Olympic basketball tournament. Seikaly did win a gold medal in the 1984 FIBA World Cup while playing for the United States.

Former Orange Shining In NBA Summer League (orangefizz.net; Papillo)
The dog days of summer are rolling on, and everyone’s eyes are on one thing: the NBA Summer League. You thought I was going to say the MLB All-Star Game, didn’t you? Anyway, there’s a lot of former Orange taking the courts in Las Vegas, many names that SU fans probably want to hear all about. Let’s dive into it:

Judah Mintz – Philadelphia 76ers

The man of the hour. Judah Mintz made the decision to leave the ‘Cuse after his sophomore season in 2024 to enter the NBA Draft. Mintz would go undrafted and found himself signing a summer league deal with the Sixers in hopes of finding his way onto a 15-man roster. The point guard has found some success so far, putting up 16 points in 19 minutes on Monday against the Trail Blazers. In the effort, Mintz went 5-of-7 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Last night against the Timberwolves, Mintz contributed nine off the bench. A solid start for the former four-star recruit who dazzled Syracuse fans night in and night out.

Cole Swider – Miami Heat

A name some ‘Cuse fans might forget, Swider finished his collegiate career with the Orange back in 2022. Since then, the 6-foot-8 forward hasn’t seen much success but is taking another chance to prove himself this summer league with the Miami Heat. Swider has done a solid job in his role, notching 38 total points in his first two games. Monday’s contest against Oklahoma City saw some struggles, as Swider shot just 1-9 from the field. Perhaps a turnaround is in order though for the sharpshooter.

Jimmy Boeheim switches teams in Germany’s top division, ponders future (PS; Ditota)

For Jimmy Boeheim, July 29 will be bittersweet.

That’s when the former Syracuse and Cornell basketball player heads overseas for his next job. This season, he’ll play for BG Goettingen in Germany’s top pro league.

Boeheim likes playing in Germany. He appreciates the talent in the league, the professionalism of the people who run it. He’s excited to meet his new teammates and start his next season as a basketball professional.

But Boeheim usually has a few more summer weeks with friends and family. He enjoys his time on Skaneateles Lake, the balmy summer days, the seemingly endless possibilities for fun.

His new team, however, has a game on September 16. That explains his early departure date.

“It’s tough to leave home for 9-10 months but I still love playing,” he said during a Tuesday phone conversation. “Still get that feeling before every game – the chills, the nerves, whatever it is. Love playing over there. Almost every game I played in last year was sold out with unbelievable fans. So that part is awesome.”

A 4-month-old Indian restaurant near Westcott Street closed abruptly. What’s coming next? (PS; $; Cazentre)

Saffron House, an Indian restaurant that opened this spring near Westcott Street in Syracuse, closed abruptly a week or so ago. Now plans are underway to replace it.

It will be another Indian restaurant, but some of the details are being worked out. The new owners have connections to the Dosa Grill, an Indian restaurant in DeWitt.

Saffron House opened in April at 124 Dell St., most recently the home of Saint Urban Restaurant, which closed last fall. Its signs and menu boasted “exotic Indian cuisine” and it won good reviews from people on Facebook pages like Where Syracuse Eats.

It closed a few weeks ago after owners informed the landlord, Norm Roth of University Hill Realty, that there had been a family emergency. After that, some of the partners in Saffron House proposed forming a new group to reopen it, Roth said. That group will sublease the spot from the Saffron House, he said.

One of the people working to reopen the restaurant under the sublease is Raj Kumar, who is associated with the Dosa Grill in DeWitt and other restaurants. Kumar’s wife, Babita Rani, is technically the owner of that restaurant at 4467 E. Genesee St. in DeWitt.

The new group is working to get permits, a liquor license and other paperwork straightened out, Kumar said. He said that will likely take a few weeks or longer.

It will not be branded as a Dosa Grill, Kumar said, and will likely keep Saffron House in the new name. The Dosa Grill in DeWitt will remain open.

“We want to bring good Indian food back to the Westcott area,” Kumar said. “We want to do that as soon as we can.”

The Saffron House offered an extensive menu, featuring lamb, chicken and seafood entrees, and items cooked in a clay tandoor oven.

The property at 124 Dell St. had been home to a restaurant called Taste of India for several years before Saint Urban moved in. Part of the Dell Street location was also once home to the Stout Beard Brewing Co. taproom.

Noble Cellar, a new restaurant in Columbus Circle. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)(Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

Downtown Syracuse newcomer named among world’s best restaurants for wine (PS; $; Miller)
A downtown Syracuse restaurant that’s been open for just five months has been named among the best restaurants in the world for wine.

Noble Cellar is among those honored in Wine Spectator’s 2024 Restaurant Awards, which annually ranks the world’s best restaurants for wine.

The new restaurant in Syracuse’s Columbus Circle joins five other Central New York restaurants that have been on the list for a few years.

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication and passion of our entire team,” said Sarah Pelligrini, who opened Noble Cellar with Robert Zaccaria in early February.

Said Zaccaria: “Our vision is for Noble Cellar to be a premier dining destination, a vibrant space where flavors, service and aesthetics seamlessly converge to create a dining adventure that transcends the ordinary. Our wine program is central to that vision.”

The magazine’s awards are the world’s only program focused exclusively on restaurant wine service. They are assigned on three levels: the Award of Excellence (2,150 winners), the Best of Award of Excellence (1,531 winners) and the Grand Award (96 winners).

Here are the winners from Central New York:
