Welcome to National Drive-Thru Day!

National Drive-Thru Day was started by Jack in the Box restaurant to recognize all drive-thru businesses and to express appreciation for the availability of convenient meals that can be picked up with a vehicle. Drive-thrus are generally thought of as being for restaurants, but they also are used for banking, to purchase liquor, to gamble, and even to get married. Prior to the holiday's first observance in 2002, Jack in the Box asked California Governor Gray Davis for support. His response was to issue a commendation to recognize the day in the state. In past years, Jack in the Box has given out free milkshakes on the day.

Motorists were first served from their vehicles in 1921, when the first drive-in, the Pig Stand, opened outside of Dallas on the highway to Fort Worth. Diners ate on the premises in their vehicles, after carhops hopped on their running boards to take orders and clipped trays with food to their windows. Beginning in 1931, Pig Stand Number 21 in Los Angeles allowed orders to be made at a window, although it is unknown if diners had to get out of their vehicles to use it. Although the Pig Stand is known for being the first drive-in, they also have laid claim to having the first drive-thru window. As of 2020, there is just one Pig Stand still in operation: Pig Stand Number 29 in San Antonio, Texas. Following the opening of the first Pig Stand, more drive-in chains followed, like Maid-Rite and Carpenter's Sandwiches. Drive-ins were particularly popular in the late 1920s and early 1930s and were the precursor to the drive-thrus of the mid-twentieth century. In the 1930s, drive-thrus at banks, known as "motor banks," got their start. These drive-thrus offered bankers convenience and security and were another precursor to drive-thrus at restaurants.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star Sadiq White Jr. is recruiting Kiyan Anthony, 4-star guards (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has one elite prospect to date in its 2025 class, and the Orange staff is pursuing numerous other highly ranked players in this cycle.

In late May, 2025 five-star forward Sadiq White Jr. from Charlotte, N.C., verbally committed to the 'Cuse. And the 6-foot-8 White says he's doing his part to recruit other top-flight 2025 targets to ultimately join him on the Hill.

Top writer Sam Lance, in a recent article on zagsblog.com, chatted with White about the Orange's 2025 class. White says that he's actively recruiting a trio of four-star guards in this cycle, and they are Kiyan Anthony, Tyler Jackson and Acaden Lewis.

All three of them are priority recruits for Syracuse basketball in the 2025 class. "I’m trying to get Acaden, bring Kiyan home," White told Lance. "We’re trying to make it big man. I’m doing my part."

Yes, please. Much respect to Sadiq here!

Syracuse basketball is heavily in the mix for several 2025 four-star and five-star prospects.

The 6-foot-5 Anthony, a talented shooting guard and a top-30 national prospect out of New York City, received a scholarship offer from the Orange in November of 2022. He took an official visit to the 'Cuse last October and has said he plans to take visits to several college campuses in the upcoming months, including a possible return to the Hill.

The ACC wants their own Paul Finebaum and we know just the person (TNIAAM; Wall)

While the Syracuse Orange haven’t taken the podium at the ACC Media Days, the noise produced by Clemson and Florida State is cranking to 11.

Before Jim Phillips could give his State of the ACC, 247 Sports published a story about the ACC Identity Crisis. In it was some comments about the ACC Network lacking their own central figure... their own Paul Finebaum.

“Obviously, the SEC has Paul Finebaum as their voice and people listen to experts and what they say,” Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm told 247Sports. “We’ve just got to make sure that we’re promoting our brand and our best players and our best teams and raise our level of play as much as we can — and have a good season.”

The frustration over the ACC Network is something we have in common with Dabo Swinney who reportedly complained “Why can’t we have a f-ing Finebaum Show?” Well the notion that the ACC doesn’t have someone who can make an impact nationally is just flat out wrong.

You want a bald white guy with glasses who isn’t afraid to tell people exactly what is on his mind? You want a f-ing Finebaum Show? We give you James Arthur Boeheim.

You need someone to go on ESPN and call a coach or administrator out, he’s got you.

Latest Brotherhood Podcast: Maliq Brown (DBR; King)

The latest episode of the Brotherhood Podcast is out and the guest for episode #30 is Syracuse transfer Maliq Brown.

Brown made a huge impression in Cameron last year when Duke simply couldn’t control him. He shot 11-16 for 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

He’s also a terrific defender. He’s not likely to start alongside Cooper Flagg and Khaman Maluach, at least not initially, but it’s going to be hard to keep him off the floor. And Duke isn’t going to take much of a dip when he’s in, either.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Syracuse fans react to his return to the Dome. Duke has been through this in reverse: Michael Gbinije left Duke after his freshman year and went to Syracuse just before the Orange moved to the ACC. Say what you will about Syracuse, but no one can deny that the fans are immensely passionate. That’s going to be an interesting trip.

As we’ve seen lately, Caleb Foster is the host for this episode.

Speaker Carl Heastie continued his annual statewide tour today with Assemblymember William B. Magnarelli at Syracuse University to announce $3 million grant to upgrade the seating in the dome, including making it ADA compliant.

“The JMA Wireless Dome has sat at the heart of Syracuse University’s campus for decades,” said Speaker Heastie. “Assembly member Magnarelli was committed to ensuring this stadium is around for future generations to enjoy and I’m honored to join him here today for this announcement.”

“There’s something special about sitting under the Dome and cheering for the Orange,” said Assemblymember Magnarelli. “This funding will allow Syracuse University to update its facilities, resettle the dome structure and make sure that future fans have the opportunity to see our teams play under this iconic landmark.”

Speaker Heastie and Assemblymember Magnarelli were joined by Syracuse University’s Vice Chancellor of Strategic Initiatives and Innovation Mike Haynie, Athletic Director John Wildhack and members of the athletic staff and coaches to announce $3 million to upgrade seating at the JMA Wireless Dome. The project will reseat the dome and make overall modifications to the stadium including, new seats, stair modifications, ensuring the stadium is ADA compliant and providing an overall better fan experience. Since 1980, the nearly 50,000-seat stadium has been the home of Syracuse’s basketball, lacrosse and football teams.

NYS kicks-in an additional $3 million for ongoing Dome improvements (warer.org; Willis)

State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie made a rare stop in Syracuse today to announce $3 million in additional state support for Syracuse University’s ongoing Dome renovation project. Crews continue to replace the aluminum benches with contoured, individual seating that will now have backs. Heastie says the investment benefits the entire region, even if the venue is owned by a private university.

“Knowing how important staples of communities are, and that's why I was supportive of funding the Buffalo Bills Stadium and we were supportive of funding the baseball stadium in Rochester," Heastie said. "And part of that was to do right by the city of Syracuse and Syracuse University. We tried to help all of the sports arenas and all of upstate New York.”

Heastie credited Central New York’s assembly delegation for advocating for the Dome as an economic engine. SU Vice Chancellor Mike Haynie says the Dome hosts more than college athletics, attracting some 935,000 visitor every year.

“The Dome also hosts statewide high school sports contests, athletic events, band competitions, countless other community activities," Haynie said. "And as a year round venue, particularly because of the renovations that we've done in recent years, Dome operations contribute more than $240 million in income to the Central New York economy.”

‘Céad míle fáilte’: Kitty Hoynes celebrates 25 years in Syracuse’s Armory Square (PS; Searing)

Hospitality is not only David Hoyne’s guiding principle, but to hear the proud soft-spoken publican tell it, it is also his birthright.

Born in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ireland, a town of about 1,500 people, Hoyne grew up sweeping floors in William Hoyne & Sons Ltd., a unique blend of hardware and grocery store, which housed a pub and provided undertaking services to the residents of the small rural Irish town.

Started in 1920 by his grandfather, William, who died tragically in a fire at the store in 1950, the Hoyne family business was more than just a store.

It was a pillar of the community dedicated to a uniquely Irish brand of neighborly service and hospitality enshrined in the Brehon Laws, a series of statutes from the 8th century A.D., that codified long-standing Irish customs.

According to these laws, a householder was required to offer food and lodging to any traveler passing through a neighborhood. This sense of duty and obligation informed David’s parents, Michael and Catherine (Kitty), who ran the business in the wake of William’s passing, and they imparted these values on their five sons as they worked alongside them.

This week, Kitty Hoynes, the beloved pub David and his wife, Cindy opened in Armory Square on July 22, 1999, celebrates its 25th anniversary; a living tribute to more than a century of Hoyne family tradition.

Nearly $2M in tax breaks approved to make Syracuse office building into apartments (PS; $; Boyer)

A $13 million project to convert a mostly empty downtown Syracuse office building into 35 apartments will get some help from taxpayers.

The Syracuse Industrial Development Agency on Tuesday approved a package of tax breaks worth $1.9 million for a Bangor, Maine-based developer’s plan to repurpose a six-story building at the corner of Harrison and Montgomery streets.

High Tide Capital plans to convert the upper five floors into five studio, 25 one-bedroom and five two-bedroom apartments. At least four of the apartments will be leased at rates affordable to residents making no greater than 80% of the city’s average median income. That complies with new city zoning law adopted in 2023 requiring projects with 20 or more units to have a minimum of 10% priced to be affordable.

According to the project application, construction work should start this summer with completion by October 2025.

A local contractor named Clarence H. Hilton built the building in 1929 and opened it as a 110-room hotel. It was named Hotel Hilton, but was not part of the international Hilton hotel change.

The Hotel Hilton was eventually sold and converted into offices, but those spaces have been vacant for several years. The only occupant has been the Ale ‘n’ Agnus Pub, which will continue to operate in half of the ground-floor space. Retail space will be built out for the other half of that floor, but a tenant is not lined up.

5 things to do around Letchworth, the gorgeous Grand Canyon of the East (PS; House)

You don’t need to venture to the West to see a grand canyon.

Upstate New York boasts a stunning, larger-than-life chasm: Letchworth State Park, the glorious “Grand Canyon of the East”.

At a whopping 14,427 acres, Letchworth spans two Western New York counties and over 17 miles of the Genesee River. The surreally beautiful park features three big waterfalls with simple names as its centerpiece, with about 50 smaller, bonus falls as cascading adornments.

There’s a reason Letchworth was recently named one of the 10 best state parks in the United States: The park offers endless adventures — from hikes along trails brimming with history and unforgettable views to hot air balloon rides over the breathtaking gorge.

But with so much to explore, where should visitors start?

Here are five ways to spend a weekend in and around Letchworth State Park.

Take a miniature road trip through the Grand Canyon of the East

It is impossible to see all of Letchworth in just one day.

The park offers 66 miles of trails, a formidable distance for even the most experienced hikers and bikers. Letchworth is so big that it has six main entrances — four on the west side of the park and two on the east.

So for travelers hoping to see as much of the park as possible in one trip, here’s a solution to the big-park problem: Take a miniature road trip through Letchworth.

Enter Letchworth at Portageville, the entrance near the southern tip of Letchworth, and drive onto Park Road — a twisting, two-lane road that runs from the bottom to the top of the park. Park at the first parking lot, lace up your hiking boots and walk down the Gorge Trail to see Upper Falls in its misty glory.

Hop back into your car and drive the short distance to park by the William Pryor Letchworth Museum. From there, two short hikes await: One takes you to Council Grounds, home to a longhouse built by the Seneca Nation in the 1700s and the gravesite of Mary Jemison, a woman who was captured as a child and adopted into the Seneca Nation. The other takes visitors to Middle Falls, a waterfall with Niagara Falls vibes, and the gorgeous Glen Iris Inn, a restaurant and hotel that was the historic home of William Pryor Letchworth, the businessman who donated his estate for the park.
