Welcome to
System Adminstrator Appreciation Day!

System administrators, or sysadmins, are IT specialists tasked with making sure computer systems are working properly. Among their many jobs, they get servers and operating systems up and running, make sure network connections are safe and working, fix email if it goes down, and update antivirus software. They are often on call, addressing technology issues at all times of the day and night. System Administrator Appreciation Day gives them recognition for what they do for individuals and businesses. On the day, they are given gifts and public acknowledgment to show that all their hard work and dedication are appreciated. Food, cake, balloons, confetti, cards, gifts, and words of affirmation are regular parts of the day.

Kiyan Anthony is no longer Carmelo’s kid: ‘Kiyan has made a name for himself’ (podcast) (PS; $; Waters)

Kiyan Anthony used to be known as the son of former Syracuse and NBA star Carmelo Anthony.

But Anthony has blossomed into one of the highest-regarded recruits in the 2025 class and earned a star’s billing without aid of his father’s name.

“I think Kiyan’s made a name for himself,’’ Joe Tipton, the national basketball reporter for On3.com, said. “He used to be ‘That’s Carmelo’s kid,’ but now he’s a really, really talented player. He’s definitely earned all the success that he’s had up to this point.’’

Tipton made his comments during an appearance on the Inside Syracuse Basketball podcast with Syracuse.com’s Mike Waters.

The discussion featured Tipton’s analysis of several high school players that the Syracuse coaches are recruiting, including Anthony. The 6-foot-5 junior at Long Island Lutheran, is ranked as the No. 27 player in the ‘25 class by On3.

“An absolute elite scorer,’’ Tipton said of Anthony. “Just a guy who can fill it up. A guy that’s an extreme threat offensively. He’s a guy that you have to have your best defender on.’’

Syracuse has competition for Anthony’s services. On Thursday, Anthony revealed his six finalists. The list included Syracuse, Auburn, USC, Ohio State, Rutgers and Florida State. Tipton noted that Syracuse has been actively recruiting Anthony the longest, offering him a scholarship in November of 2022.

“Syracuse has been around so long,’’ Tipton said, “and they’ve always felt like the favorite to land him.’’

Anthony isn’t the only prominent player in the ‘25 class that Syracuse is recruiting. Syracuse coach Adrian Autry and his assistants already have a commitment from Sadiq White, a 6-8 forward from Charlotte, N.C., who On3 has ranked No. 31 in the class.

‎Locked On Syracuse - Daily Podcast On Syracuse Orange Football & Basketball: Recruiting Expert Believes Syracuse Basketball's 2025 Recruiting Class can be SPECIAL on Apple Podcasts (apple.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Basketball's 2025 recruiting class is off to a strong start. Adrian Autry and his staff secured 247sports composite five star prospect Sadiq White. White is also helping the Cuse get four-stars: Kiyan Anthony, Tyler Jackson, and Acaden Lewis. Plus, the Orange are in the mix for players like London Jemison and even Chris Cenac.

Jackson Holzer brings on recruiting expert Sam Lance to go over Cuse Basketball 2025 recruiting on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Syracuse Basketball: Sizing up the top 6 of 4-star priority recruit Kiyan Anthony (itlh; Adler)

As expected, Syracuse basketball has made the top six of 2025 four-star priority recruit Kiyan Anthony, although the Orange's competition to prevail for the 6-foot-5 shooting guard from New York City is intense.

While some 'Cuse fans, understandably, continue to maintain that Syracuse basketball winning out for the son of Orange legend and long-time NBA star Carmelo Anthony is inevitable, I am not in that camp.

Without question, head coach Adrian Autry and his top-flight staff are recruiting Kiyan Anthony hard, and that's proven the case for Syracuse basketball coaches for a while now. The top-30 national prospect, per On3, landed a 'Cuse scholarship offer in November of 2022, and Anthony took an official visit to the Hill last October.

A Grandma's pizza from Casa Mia on the first floor 500 S. Salina St. is the CNY Pizza Tour. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)(Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

CNY Pizza Tour, stop #29: This downtown Syracuse pizza is what Grandma used to make (PS; $; Miller)

Downtown Syracuse offers little when it comes to pizza slices at lunchtime. We have Pavone’s on Warren Street, and Nick’s Tomato Pie in Armory Square. Otherwise we’re stuck with sandwiches, salads and more sandwiches.

A hard-to-find bodega on the first floor of the Chimes Building is trying to change that. About six years ago, Casa Mia moved into one of the storefronts at 500 S. Salina St., where it intersects with West Onondaga Street.

“We’re kind of hidden,” said owner Aiman Wady, who runs this corner store/pizzeria with his father, Mike. “People seem to miss us.”

Casa Mia is flanked by the downtown Centro bus hub and the 4-year-old Salt City Market, a food hall that offers no pizza.

Aiman is right: His store is hard to find. I stumbled upon this place while trying to rid my head of writer’s block with an afternoon walk through the city. The green, white and red sign caught my attention because it looked like the Italian flag. That meant pizza.

The kitchen here sits in the back of this tiny market. During lunch, they keep five or six 36-inch pizzas in the display case for slices. These oversized wedges sell for $2.75 each.

They had plenty of plain cheese slices, some pepperoni, a bunch of chicken bacon ranch, and a chicken wing pizza. (That’s a hard no on the Buffalo wing pizza.)

Aiman said he would be taking home a Grandma’s pizza for dinner when his shift was over. Sounds good. That’s what I was now having for lunch.

Aiman, I’ll have one whole pizza, please ...

Address: Casa Mia, 500 S. Salina St., downtown Syracuse. It’s on the first floor of the Chimes Building. (315) 422-2111

Do they deliver: Yes, after 3 p.m.

What I ate: A 16-inch Grandma’s pizza. It does not appear on the menu, but they’ll be happy to make it for you.

Why this pizza? It’s the pizza that’s been handed down in the Wady family for generations. This is what they were having for dinner.

New specialty fast-food restaurant coming to Destiny USA (PS; $; Doran)
A new fast-food eatery is coming to the food court at Destiny USA.

FriesFriesFries by The Potato Company is opening Monday in the mall’s food court, said Alannah Gallagher, speaking for Destiny USA.

The restaurant will be giving away samples all week, she said.

The eatery specializes in making fresh French fries using safflower oil. The menu includes a variety of toppings: beef gravy, braised beef or pulled pork. You can get poutine, a dish of fries covered in gravy and cheese curds.

FriesFriesFries sells Nathan’s hot dogs, also with a variety of toppings.

After pushback from public, Manlius drops proposed $2.8 million land purchase for new town hall (PS; $; Doran)

The Manlius Town Board has decided it won’t pursue buying a parcel of land for $2.8 million for a new town hall.

Manlius Town Supervisor John Deer initially wanted to sign a purchase agreement for the eight-acre parcel on North Burdick Street, and then analyze whether it would be a workable site. The deal, he has said, would allow the town to withdraw from the agreement.

But several town board councilors and the public had concerns about the property, including the cost, wetlands on the site and lack of details about the overall plan.

The parcel was assessed at $337,800, and many residents questioned the $2.8 million sale price.

“With the public pushback and the councilors’ concerns we decided against this site,” Deer said.

He also said it appeared the parcel would require extensive site work before it could be usable.

The land is owned by Twin Shores Properties LLC, which is proposing to build a residential and retail development along North Burdick Street.

The Manlius Town Board voted Wednesday night to hire VIP Structures Inc. to complete an analysis of the current town hall and the potential cost to renovate it.

At the same time, the board is looking into a couple of other properties for a potential new town hall, Deer said. He declined to identify them at this time.
