Upside-Down-Traffic-Light-in-Syracuse-1558-600x400.jpg

Welcome to International Traffic Light Day!

By 1914, there were more automobiles on the road than ever, and they were still sharing the streets with streetcars, horse carriages, merchant carts, and more. There was a need for regulations to make sure traffic moved smoothly and that accidents would decrease. At the time, traffic was controlled by the police. But traffic lights were about to come along and make road navigation easier, safer, and more efficient.

On August 5, 1914, what is considered to be the first electric traffic light was installed in Cleveland, Ohio, at the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue. It had four pairs of red and green lights, one for each side of the intersection, and a warning buzzer that indicated when the light was about to change. It had to be operated manually by someone in a nearby booth. It was based on a design by James Hoge. He had previously applied for a patent for a "Municipal Traffic Control System," and his patent—#1,251,666—was approved in 1918. The Cleveland Automobile Club thought that their new traffic light might revolutionize the handling of traffic in crowded cities.

There were other early traffic signals and traffic lights, both before and after Cleveland's and James Hoge's lights. In 1868, a gas-lit and manually-operated traffic sign was installed in London. It had two arms: one said "stop" and the other said "caution." Tragically, less than a month after its installation, it exploded and the policeman who was operating it was injured.

Four-star guard Acaden Lewis visits Syracuse, Duke up next | Zagsblog (zagsblog; Zagoria)

Acaden Lewis, the four-star point guard from Sidwell Friends in Washington, D.C., took an unofficial visit to Syracuse this week and will next visit Duke Aug. 5.

“It was good,” he told ZAGSBLOG of the Syracuse visit.

“[Their] message was I’d come in and play as a freshman and If I maintain and grow trust, the ball would be in my hand

Lewis recently cut his list to Kentucky, UConn, North Carolina, Duke, Tennessee, Michigan, Auburn and Syracuse.

As for Duke, he told ZAGSBLOG at Peach Jam: “That was really cool because that was the last one of the Blue Bloods. On top of that, they have somewhat of the DMV pipeline with guys like Trevor Keels, Darren Harris and Pat Ngongba. They’ve had a pipeline and successful guys from this area, so it’s great to see that they think I could be the next big thing from this area. I have a great relationship with coach [Jon] Scheyer and his staff; they just seem fired up about me and think I can come in and play big minutes right away.”

The 6-foot-3 Sidwell Friends (DC.) and Team Durant AAU product exploded on the Nike EYBL circuit this spring, earning offers from every blue-blood school during the month of May.

He took unofficial visits to UConn, North Carolina and Kentucky in the subsequent weeks.

“You can’t expect what happened to be to be honest,” he told ZAGSBLOG at Peach Jam. “It’s definitely a blessing.”

In terms of a timetable, Lewis aims to commit sometime in the fall, but plans to take official visits to all eight schools before announcing his decision.

Lewis is maturing into a lead guard for the next level, getting his teammates involved, while understanding when to attack and score the ball at a high rate.

“What you’re seeing is a guy who’s a playmaker, but he’s starting to mature into a game manager as well,” Sidwell Friends and Team Durant head coach Eric Singletary said at Peach Jam.

“He’s somebody you can really trust to run your team. He has a lot of stuff you can’t teach, but his progress over one year with the stuff we are working with him on has been incredible.”

Syracuse basketball recruit Sadiq White to play senior year at IMG Academy (PS; $; Waters)

Syracuse basketball commit Sadiq White announced on Sunday that he would spend his senior year of high school at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

White, a 6-foot-8 forward from Charlotte, N.C., has previously played for Myers Park High School. The elite 2025 recruit committed to Syracuse in June.

In deciding to attend IMG Academy, White is following the path taken by several other Syracuse players in recent years, including Donnie Freeman, Justin Taylor and Quadir Copeland.

White is a 5-star recruit in the ‘25 class. He is ranked 20th in the class by ESPN.com, 247Sports lists him at No. 21 and On3.com has him at No. 32.

Joe Tipton, national recruiting reporter for On3 offered his analysis of White in a recent appearance on the Inside Syracuse Basketball podcast.

“Sadiq is a super high upside player,’’ Tipton said. “He’s ultra athletic. Really long. Really aggressive. Plays really hard. I think he has an elite defensive ability as well. The shot’s still coming together, but once again the upside is through the roof.’’

In June, White participated in the NBPA Top 100 camp in Orlando. He averaged 18.5 points per game while shooting 51.4% from the field. He also averaged 6.1 rebounds per game.

He averaged 17.4 points per game at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam in early July.

STRONG RECRUITING Puts Syracuse Basketball BACK | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Basketball has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2021. The Cuse used to be one of the premier programs in the country under Jim Boeheim. It's easy to say that Adrian Autry needs to lead the Cuse back to March Madness to say the program is back. However, it's strong recruiting, mainly a top-5 class in 2025 with Sadiq White and possibly Kiyan Anthony, Tyler Jackson, Acaden Lewis, and others that'll put the Orange back on the map.Jackson Holzer believes strong recruiting puts the Cuse back to where it needs to be on this week's edition of Poll Friday on the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange Flashback- Syracuse vs Duke in first ACC battle (itlh; Nutting)
This match-up saw two legendary head coaches, both in the basketball hall of fame, go head to head for the first time as conference opponents, as head coach Jim Boeheim and his Syracuse basketball team would take on coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils, in the first of two meetings between the two teams that season, with the first being in front of a sold-out Carrier Dome crowd.

This game would also see two ranked teams, The Orange, being the number two ranked team, and the Blue Devils, ranked No. 17 in the nation, each had talented players going head to head as well, as we would see forward Jerami Grant, guard Tyler Ennis, forward CJ Fair, and guard Trevor Cooney of the Orange go head to head with forward Jabari Parker, guard Rasheed Sulaimon, forward Amile Jefferson and guard Rodney Hood of the Blue Devils.

This was a back-and-forth contest, with both teams fighting for every rebound, knocking down key shots, and playing lockdown defense, and the Orange fans were in for a treat when this game would eventually be decided in overtime.

With the Orange leading 91-89, after a made free throw by Fair, Duke would have one more chance to win with 5.5 seconds to go and no timeouts. Duke's guard Quinn Cook would throw up a prayer attempt that would hit off the backboard, but miss the bucket, as the Syracuse Orange would hold on to take down the Blue Devils, 91-89, in the first meeting of these two legendary programs since the 'Cuse joined the Atlantic Coast Conference for the 2013-14 season.

Syracuse basketball and Duke played an instant classic in early February of 2014.

Fair would finish with 28 points, five rebounds, and one assist, however, it would be Grant who would lead the Orange with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and shooting a perfect 10-of-10 from the field, as the Orange would advance to 21-0 on the season and remain undefeated.

Parker would have 15 points, nine rebounds, and one assist, while Jefferson would finish with 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, as the Blue Devils would fall to 17-5 on the season.

This was just one of two battles that the Orange would face off with the Blue Devils that year, as the next time these two teams would meet, it was at Cameron Indoor, where the Orange would fall to Duke, but many people call it the game where Boeheim would lose his jacket and get ejected after an offensive foul was called on Fair driving to the basket and colliding with Hood.

This rivalry between Syracuse basketball and Duke has been one to watch over the past few years, and we hope to see another great matchup this upcoming 2024-25 season.

Cole Swider, the former Syracuse University basketball player, has signed a deal with the Indiana Pacers, according to a report.

Swider, a 6-foot-8 forward, agreed to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract with the Pacers following an impressive showing in the NBA’s Summer League with the Miami Heat.

Shams Charania, NBA reporter for The Athletic, first reported the deal.

Swider had been waiting for an opportunity after playing for the Heat in the NBA Summer League even though the team had rescinded its contract offer prior to the start of play in Las Vegas.

Swider stayed with the Heat and helped the team win the summer league championship. He averaged 11.7 points and made 46% of his 3-point shots in six games in Las Vegas. He scored 19 points in Miami’s win over Memphis in the championship game.

Swider recently spoke to Syracuse.com about his unique situation and his hopes of getting an offer from an NBA team prior to the start of training camp on Oct. 1.

This will be the third NBA team that Swider has gone to training camp with in three years since he left Syracuse after the 2021-22 season. Over the last two years, he has been on two-way contracts with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat.

This past season Swider appeared in 18 games with Miami, averaging 2.3 points per game. In 14 games with the Heat’s G-League affiliate, the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Skyforce, Swider scored 24.9 points per game.

Swider shot lights out in summer league, awaits next opportunity: ‘You have to be patient’ (PS; $; Waters)

Cole Swider is in NBA limbo.

After playing, and playing well, in the NBA’s Las Vegas Summer League, he’s waiting for an opportunity to present itself. An opportunity in the form of a chance to go to an NBA team’s training camp, be it on a full contract, a two-way deal, an Exhibit 10 agreement or a training camp invite.

“Just another offseason in the life of a guy trying to make the NBA,’’ Swider quipped in a recent telephone interview.

Swider, a 6-foot-8 forward who played at Syracuse during the 2021-22 season, is entering his third year as a professional basketball player. He had hoped that this would be a summer of consistency. The Heat had extended a qualifying offer for the 2024-25 season.

But just before the start of the NBA’s Summer League in Las Vegas, the offer was rescinded. Miami already had three players on two-way deals. Adding Swider would have cost the Heat in terms of financial penalties according to the league’s salary cap structure.

“With the team’s roster construction, it didn’t surprise me as much,’’ Swider said despite the timing of the decision. “There were three or four guys with my skill set on the roster already.’’

Swider made the decision to stay and play with Miami in Las Vegas.

“I already had continuity and familiarity with coaches, the organization, the team,’’ Swider said. “The whole idea is to try to show teams that you can play and contribute to a winning team and I thought that playing for Miami gave me the best chance to do that in Las Vegas.’’

Syracuse native to perform major stunt at Olympics closing ceremony (PS; Herbert)

A Syracuse native is set to perform a stunt at the Olympics closing ceremony, according to multiple reports.

Tom Cruise will skydive to the famed Hollywood sign as part of the Aug. 11 handoff from Paris to Los Angeles for the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics, TMZ sources said. The stunt was secretly shot in March, according to the celebrity news site.

Cruise will rappel down the top of Stade de France and land on the stadium field with the official Olympic flag, according to TMZ. Then the broadcast will show a previously recorded video of Cruise flying to L.A. with the flag and jumping out of a plane to the Hollywood sign.

It will be part of a “major Hollywood production” for next week’s closing ceremony, an insider told Deadline. The event will feature L.A. Mayor Karen Bass ultimately receiving the Olympic flag from Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, but other details have been kept secret.

Cruise, who was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in Syracuse, N.Y., is an Oscar-nominated actor known for performing his own stunts in movies like “Mission: Impossible” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” He was been spotted in Paris cheering on Team USA athletes like Simone Biles during the Olympic Games.

“It’s awesome,” Cruise told Reuters. “Great stories, great athletes. It’s incredible what they have to do, the sense of accomplishment.”

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Olympics closing ceremonies are typically a star-studded affair to build excitement for the next Olympics. In 2008, Jimmy Page and Leona Lewis performed Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” in Beijing on top of a fake bus headed to London. In 1984, the L.A. Games featured performances by Lionel Richie, The Beach Boys and “Star Wars” composer John Williams.

The next Summer Olympics are scheduled to run from July 14-30, 2028, at various venues in Los Angeles including the Coliseum, the Crypto.com Arena, the Convention Center, the L.A. Football Club Stadium, USC’s Galen Center and the Peacock Theater. It will be the third time the U.S. city has hosted the Summer Games.

‘Queens of R&B’ SWV and Xscape tour transports Syracuse back to the ‘90s (review) (PS; Hernandez)

Surrounded by chunky shoes, wide legged cargo pants, plaid mini dresses and neon outfits, it was clear that Saturday night’s crowd at the Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater at Lakeview in Syracuse was ready for a trip back to the 90s and the “Queens of R&B” tour delivered.

Over 6,000 fans showed up on a hot, muggy night looking to see a full lineup of talent spanning the last three decades, including R&B hitmakers 702, Mýa, Total, all brought together by the dynamic headliners SWV and Xscape.

They got even more music than they bargained for, in the best way.

The party started early with opener Jayye Michael kicking things off before the 7 p.m. official start time for the concert. Michael, 21, is the son of SWV’s Coko Gamble and performed solo on stage.

Michael gave such an energetic performance that he later revealed on Instagram that he had a wardrobe malfunction, splitting the back seam of his pants.

That level of excitement and strong vocals carried throughout most of the night.

New R&B girl group PsiRyn (pronounced ‘siren’) took the stage at 7 p.m. Signed to Xscape member Kandi Burruss’ label, their 15-minute set was full of immaculate covers like Brandy’s “What About Us?” and “I’m Goin Down” by Mary J. Blige. The tight harmonies and familiar melodies hyped the crowd.

The OMG Girlz, a group created by Xscape’s Tameka ‘Tiny’ Harris and featuring the vocals of her daughter Zonnique Jailee Pullins (Star), kept the energy going with their brand of pop and R&B.

The bluest lake in the world borders Central NY and it’s a perfect summer oasis (PS; Hernandez)

Upstate New York has Green Lakes with its gorgeous jade-colored waters and as well as Lake George, touted as the cleanest lake in America. A new list however, has declared a lake bordering the state as the bluest lake in the entire world.

Canada Casino, though not exactly the world’s lake experts, shared a study in which they analyzed the color of 80 popular lakes worldwide via unedited satellite photos. With a color match tool, they found the average HEX color code of each lake and compared it to YInMn Blue, a brilliant blue hue discovered in 2009.

Lake Ontario came closest to matching the YInMn Blue, followed by Lake Superior.

The waters of Lake Ontario are enjoyed by the Northern, Central and Western NY. From the historical shores of Sackets Harbor, the sunsets on the rock flats of Oswego, the backdrop for otherworldly Chimney Bluffs State Park, Hamlin Beach State Park, Fair Haven Beach and more, the waters we share with Canada are a serene haven year-round.
