Welcome to Corporate Baby Name Day!

Syracusefan.com, take the trash out and do your homework now!

What are your thoughts on someone giving their baby the name Nike, Netflix, or Snapchat? Corporate Baby Name Day is a day in honor of the idea of selling the naming rights of babies to corporations. The day was referenced on the Humorlist, on August 6, 2005.

In 2001, American Baby conducted a poll asking if parents would sell the naming rights of their babies to a corporation for $500,000. Some of the corporation names listed as examples were Pepsi, Friskies, Kleenex, Budweiser, and Jeep. Twenty-one percent of respondents said they would, and twenty-eight percent said they would consider it. The results were released on August 6.

The poll was done in response to Jason Black and Frances Schroeder, a New York State couple, who tried to auction off the naming rights of their baby on Yahoo! and eBay. They started the bidding at $500,000, with the hopes that they could use the money to buy a home and start a college fund. Unfortunately for them, no one bid. They ended up naming their baby Zane, on August 6, 2001, the deadline for adding a name to his birth certificate.

Ex-CNY, SU hoops star takes coaching job at his former high school: ‘It’s just going back home’ (PS; $; Kramer)

Dajuan Coleman’s high school basketball career has brought him home.

Coleman has been named head junior varsity/assistant varsity coach for the boys team at Jamesville-DeWitt. Coleman is a former Red Rams All-American who won three state titles at the school. He also went on to play at Syracuse University.

Coleman has previously held assistant coaching positions at Nottingham and Baldwinsville. Running the Red Rams junior varsity team will be his first position as a scholastic head coach.

“It’s just going back home. That’s the biggest thing. I feel like it’s a full circle moment for me,” Coleman said. “And I’m just happy to be back. Everything just felt great about it.”

Coleman, 31, will work under new J-D head coach James Jones. Jones and Coleman coached together on Nottingham’s staff two seasons ago. Jones was a J-D assistant last year and was hired as the new head coach this summer.

“Dajuan is one of those guys that any coach would want on his staff,” Jones said. “There’s not something you can ask him that he hasn’t done. Having a guy like that on my staff is definitely a plus.”

  • The teams first met in 1930, when the Orange defeated the Hoyas, 40-18, in Syracuse's Archbold Gym.
  • Syracuse won last year's encounter in Washington, D.C., 80-68.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange flashback- Tyler Ennis from Half Court (itlh; Nutting)

Back in the 2013-14 season, the first year that Syracuse basketball was in the Atlantic Coast Conference after leaving the Big East Conference, the Orange were undefeated with a 23-0 record and were ranked number one in the nation, as they traveled to take on the rival Pittsburgh Panthers, who had a 20-4 record and were ranked 25th at the time, and who also had joined the ACC as well.

This Syracuse Orange team had a lot of fire power, in young guard Tyler Ennis, guard Trevor Cooney, forward CJ Fair, forward Jerami Grant, and the big man center Rakeem Christmas. They were going up against a Panthers team that had the likes of forward Talib Zanna and guard Lamar Patterson.

This game was coming down to the wire, with the Panther leading the Orange, 56-55, with only 4.4 seconds on the clock, no timeouts for the Orange and they had to go the length of the court to have a chance to take the lead.

The ball was inbounded to guard Ennis, who dribbled the ball past half court, and threw up a prayer shot while being guarded by two Panthers, that would go in at the buzzer to help the Orange remain undefeated and take down the Panthers, 58-56. The shot not only silenced the Pittsburgh fans at home, but would go down in history as one of the greatest shots in Syracuse basketball history.

Point guard Tyler Ennis helped Syracuse basketball knock off Pittsburgh in dramatic fashion.

Forward Fair lead the scoring that night with 14 points, four rebounds, and one block, while Ennis would finish 13 points, two rebounds, and five assists for the Orange to go 24-0 on the season and remain the number one team in the nation. Zanna would finish with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and one assist, while Patterson would finish with 14 points, four rebounds, and four assists as the Panthers would fall to 20-5 overall.

Looking back on this moment, there have been some crazy last-second shots that the Orange have made that would stand the test of time. whether it is Pearl Washington's big half-court shot to take down Boston College back in 1984 or John Gillon's big last-second three to take down the No. 10 Duke Blue Devils back in 2017. But this half-court shot to defeat Pitt will always go down as one of the biggest shots in Orange history.

Jon Jaques is Cornell’s new head basketball coach. Jimmy Boeheim sent an endorsement email (PS; $; Ditota)

The transition, Jon Jaques said, went about as seamlessly as possible.

Getting there, though, required a bit of patience.

On April 5, Cornell named Jaques as the successor to Brian Earl, who left the Big Red after his basketball team compiled a 22-8 record and finished tied for second place in the Ivy League. Earl accepted the head coaching job at William & Mary on March 23.

Jaques had been a Cornell assistant for 12 seasons, spanning two head coaching regimes. He captained the Big Red’s magical 2010 season, the year Cornell advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

He was an unsurprising and popular choice to succeed Earl. Jaques had been Cornell’s associate head coach since 2022.

“I think it’s a great hire,” said former Cornell star Matt Morgan. “Obviously, I’m super happy for Coach Jaques.”

“I think he’ll do a great job,” said Jimmy Boeheim, who played at Cornell before transferring to Syracuse for his final season. “No one loves Cornell more than him. He played there. He was an assistant there. He’s the best.”

Electrik Karma, an Indian American 'fusion' restaurant, will open in the space at Destiny USA formerly occupied by the World of Beer. Destiny USA photo.SYR

From World of Beer to Indian American fusion: New dining option coming to Destiny USA (PS; $; Cazentre)

The restaurant space at Destiny USA occupied for 10 years by the World of Beer is reopening this month as an Indian American “fusion bar and grill.”

Electrik Karma will open Aug. 12 in the space on Destiny’s third level across from RPM Raceway.

It will be operated by Neil Patel, who owned the World of Beer bar and restaurant from its opening in 2013 until it closed at the end of June.

The menu at Electrik Karma will feature a blend of Indian and American dishes, with some crossover items, such as one called Chicken Wings with Tandoori Buffalo Sauce.

Other dishes include Vegetable Samosas and Karma Nachos, plus a selection of burgers, sandwiches, flatbreads, and bowls. They include Butter Chicken Flatbread, Vindaloo Lamb Cheesesteak, and build-your-own-bowl options, according to a news release from Destiny USA. There are also desserts, like Royal Butter Toffee Cake and a Mango Delight Sunday.

“We wanted to keep a lot of what we had (at World of Beer), but also give it a different slant with the Indian flavors and spices,” Patel said.

The bar will continue to feature a wide variety of beers, with 40 to 50 taps and many others in cans, Patel said. “It’s still going to be a place with an emphasis on beer,” he said.

The decor is undergoing some changes, including white-washing of the brick interior and some new features on the patio, Patel said.

New nuclear power will be on the agenda when NY officials hold energy summit in Syracuse (PS; $; Knauss)

State leaders will hold an energy summit in Syracuse next month that will include discussion of the possible role advanced nuclear plants could play in meeting New York’s goal of an emission-free electric grid. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced plans for the summit Monday.

Two of the five panel discussions at the daylong conference will be focused on “new nuclear” technology such as small advanced nuclear reactors, according to a draft agenda.

The meeting also will include discussions about accelerating the deployment of renewable power sources like wind and solar. And there will be a focus on developing new power sources that can be dispatched when renewable power falls short.

New York law mandates that by 2040 all electricity be generated without producing carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. As of now, about half the state’s electricity comes from burning natural gas or other fuels that emit greenhouse gases.

The energy summit will explore a wide variety of technologies for achieving a clean system, said Doreen Harris, president and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, which is sponsoring the conference.

At this point, nuclear power is a more mature technology than many alternatives, she said.

“It is actually a more, I’d say, advanced area of commercial viability, as opposed to some of the other resources that we see on the technical horizon at this point,’’ Harris said in an interview Monday.

NYSERDA plans to develop a roadmap for the potential deployment of new nuclear power, similar to the Offshore Wind Master Plan the authority crafted to guide development of that resource, Harris said. NYSERDA plans to gain expert feedback at the Syracuse summit to help prepare a policy for new nuclear power, she said.

“New nuclear is a resource that we see strong federal support for,’’ Harris said. And frankly, we see deployment of these technologies -- such that it is, I would say, ripe for consideration. Is this a resource that New York would consider? But it’s not to say we have the answer to that.”
