Welcome to National Cheeseburger Day!

Hamburgers are pretty satisfying, but they are just a little bit better when they are topped with cheese and turned into cheeseburgers. Celebrated today, cheeseburgers can be made with many types of cheese—as long as it has good meltability. Fast food restaurants often use processed cheese, such as American, but cheddar, pepper jack, Swiss, mozzarella, and blue cheese are often used to make cheeseburgers as well. Cheese slices are usually placed on top of burgers right before they are done cooking so that the cheese begins to melt over them. Multiple patties and multiple pieces of cheese may be used in each cheeseburger. Some cheeseburgers even have the cheese inside of the burger, often being called a Juicy Lucy. Just as with hamburgers, many other toppings are often added to cheeseburgers as well, such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato, sauteed mushrooms, avocado, and bacon.

Adding cheese to burgers gained popularity late-1920s to mid-1930s. There are various stories to as how the cheeseburger came to be, and multiple people have claimed to have invented it. The most common story says that Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger sometime between 1924 and 1926 while working at his father's restaurant, The Rite Spot, in Pasadena, California. One version of the story says he came up with the idea to drop cheese on a burger by himself, while another says a homeless person suggested to Sternberger to do so. Eventually, his burger was added to the menu as a "cheese hamburger." One reason some do not give Sternberger credit for inventing the cheeseburger is because his burger was not technically called a cheeseburger.

When Adrian Autry became the Syracuse men’s basketball head coach last year, he wanted to use his platform to give back to the community. His predecessor, Jim Boeheim, was heavily involved in his own foundation, which focuses on promoting cancer research and lessening inequality in the region. But Autry wished to find his own avenue.

Through his wife, Andrea, Autry met Doug Pinckney — CEO of the Pinckney Hugo Group, a marketing and communications firm in Syracuse. He was involved in and fundraised for 100 Black Men of Syracuse. The organization’s mission is to offer male mentorship and fundraising efforts to underprivileged kids in the Syracuse area.

From Autry’s first meeting with Pinckney and the leaders of 100 Black Men of Syracuse, he knew he found the right place. Autry attended the 100 Black Men of Syracuse’s Golf Tournament fundraiser at the Skaneateles Country Club Monday. The event is one of the organization’s main fundraisers, and it’s estimated to have had around 120 golfers participate. In total, it was projected to raise between $60,000 and $70,000, which go fully toward scholarships.

The scholarship money can be used for college, work-training opportunities or private school. It also aims to provide programs that offer important life skills such as financial literacy, job opportunities and nutrition to prepare young people for adulthood.

“There is a particular necessity for young men to see positive male role models — men who are dedicated, consistent and invested in their growth,” Drake Harrison, 100 Black Men of Syracuse’s executive director, said. “While we acknowledge the support of women, we emphasize the importance of men being present in the lives of young men.”

Autry grew up in a single-parent household where his father was out of the picture. He said his mentors were the older men in the neighborhood. When they found out Autry was good at basketball, they helped guide him in the right direction.

“Everybody needs that kind of support,” Autry said. “Even when kids have a family, sometimes they don’t always listen to their parents. That’s why having an organization like this, with people committed to helping and guiding them, is so important.”

Autry played a round of golf with SU assistant coaches Dan Engelstad and Allen Griffin, then spoke at the reception to end the event. Autry discussed how he became involved with 100 Black Men of Syracuse and why the organization’s mission spoke to him. He also brought up the importance of Syracuse’s basketball program giving back to the community, whether with time or their presence and engagement.

He even shifted the conversation to SU’s upcoming basketball season, briefly indulging attendees with a breakdown of the Orange’s key returning players and transfers.

Syracuse Basketball: Big weekend as 5-star commit, 5-star priority recruit will visit (itlh; Adler)

This weekend will prove a huge one for Syracuse basketball coaches.

Both Orange 2025 five-star commit Sadiq White Jr. from Charlotte, N.C., and 'Cuse 2026 five-star priority target Jordan Smith Jr. from the Washington, D.C., area are expected to visit the Syracuse basketball program this weekend.

The great Mike Waters of Syracuse.com first reported that the 6-foot-8 White will take an official visit to the Orange this weekend. Not too long ago, top analyst/scout Colby Giacubeno first reported (and confirmed to me directly) that the 6-foot-3 Smith will unofficially visit the 'Cuse from September 21 to September 22.

White, an elite power forward who recently vaulted to No. 15 nationally in the 2025 cycle per ESPN, verbally pledged to Syracuse basketball in late May of this year. He has unofficially visited the Orange twice - in mid-September of last year and then again in late February of this year on Jim Boeheim Day.

Smith, a top-10 national prospect in the 2026 class, received a scholarship offer from the 'Cuse in early May of 2023. As far as I can tell, he is one of the top targets for the Orange in this cycle, and the Syracuse basketball staff has been in attendance for him over the past few months on the AAU circuit and at other events, including this past July when Smith helped guide the USA Basketball U17 national team to the gold medal at the 2024 FIBA World Cup in Istanbul, Turkey.

Syracuse basketball coaches have a big recruiting weekend on tap.

White, who was excellent this spring and summer while starring for the 17U squad of the Charlotte-based Team United in Nike's EYBL, will spend his senior season at the powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., which is a member of the loaded 14-team Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Scholastic ("EYBL Scholastic").

4-star Albany PG, who was mulling second Syracuse basketball visit, names final three (itlh; Adler)
Keyshuan Tillery, a fast-rising 2025 four-star point guard who held a Syracuse basketball offer, is down to three finalists.

The Orange isn't one of them.

Per various reports from recruiting analysts and national writers, the 6-foot-1 Tillery has a final three that includes fellow Atlantic Coast Conference schools Virginia and Wake Forest, along with Cincinnati out of the Big 12 Conference. Tillery's college decision is expected to come soon, according to analysts.

Naturally, I'm wishing Keyshuan all the best as his recruitment comes to a close.

The Albany, N.Y., native played quite well this spring and summer for the 17U team of the Albany-based City Rocks in Nike's EYBL league. That helped fuel a rise in his 2025 rankings as well as an expanded offer sheet for Tillery, who has evolved into one of the top point guards in the senior class and is currently rated inside the top 50 nationally by ESPN.

Aurora awestruck: Northern lights dance above Upstate NY (photos, video) (PS; House)

Sky watchers who longed to see the stunning northern lights Monday night in New York were not disappointed.

The aurora borealis paid a visit to Upstate New York overnight, delighting stargazers who feared the nearly-full harvest supermoon might outshine the northern lights. The aurora colored skies in Geneseo, Rochester, Bolton Landing and beyond in a rainbow of pulsing neon shades.

“Every time I see the northern lights, it’s like my first time,” wrote photographer Evan McPhatter, who captured the aurora borealis coloring the sky above Braddock Bay Park in Greece with ribbons of lime and magenta.

It marked the second time in a week the northern lights were visible Upstate, which has been lucky enough to enjoy colorful visits from the aurora borealis in May and August.

While the aurora isn’t forecasted to be visible to New Yorkers tonight or tomorrow, another brilliant celestial show is coming to skies above the Empire State.

The harvest supermoon will loom brightly in New York’s skies tonight, appearing a bit bigger and brighter than the average full moon. The harvest moon is the second of this year’s four consecutive supermoons.

Sky lovers will also have a chance tonight to catch a partial lunar eclipse — an event that will make it look like a small bite has been taken out of the moon. (In the Eastern time zone, the partial lunar eclipse is expected to start around 8:40 p.m. and peak around 10:44 p.m.)

After 34 years of feeding the Syracuse University Hill, pizzeria serves its final slice (PS; Miller)

After 34 years of feeding Syracuse University students, staff and the rest of the Westcott neighborhood, Dorian’s Gourmet Pizza & Deli has closed for good.

Over the past few years, the longtime pizzeria at 534 Westcott St., scaled back its hours during the summer when SU students were away. This year, however, Dorian’s never returned to its regular schedule.

In the past week, sheets of paper were taped to the front door and a window under the “Open” sign that read “Dorian’s is closed.”

“Thank you for making us a part of the community for 34 years,” the signs say. “We are grateful to have been able to serve you.”

It adds that they will relocate and serve more traditional Greek food.

Kostas ‘Gus’ Petkopoulus had operated the Fastbreak Deli in the location before turning it into a pizza shop in 1989.

His Greek pizza was among his most popular. It was made with a buttered crust, fresh garlic, spinach and tomatoes with feta, parmesan and mozzarella cheese. Dorian’s also named its sandwiches named after Greek gods. The Hermes, for example, was corned beef, baked with hot sauerkraut, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese.

This Upstate NY city has been named one of the best college towns in America (PS; House)

Upstate New York is dotted with unforgettable college towns brimming with school spirit.

And Rochester, a vibrant city with an impressive number of higher education institutions, has just been named one of the best college towns in the United States.

Rochester was one of 20 communities included in a roundup of the top college towns in America by Thrillist, a digital publication focused on travel. The Flower City was the only place in college-saturated New York state to make the list, which included towns ranging from Ann Arbor, Michigan to State College, Pennsylvania.

The Rochester area hosts several public and private colleges — including the University of Rochester, the Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher University and SUNY Brockport.

For those students, Rochester offers a unique late-night, rite-of-passage eat: garbage plates, a dish created by Nick Tahou Hots that traditionally consists of hamburgers or hot dogs on a mountain of home fries and macaroni salad topped with a spicy meat sauce.

Garbage plates are a “big part” of the college experience in Rochester, Thrillist wrote.

“Rochester’s confluence of students from the University of Rochester, RIT, and nearby SUNYs at Brockport and Geneseo have made it the stuff of late-night legends,” the magazine wrote.
