Welcome to Free Queso Day!

Salsa and chips are always free at Moe's Southwest Grill, but queso—or "liquid gold," as they call it—is also free today. Why? Because it's Free Queso Day! Each year on the day, Moe's gives out a free six-ounce cup of their queso as a way to thank their loyal customers. In past years, the restaurant—which is a fast-casual franchise that serves southwestern food in around 700 locations—has held contests giving those who enter the opportunity to win free queso for life. (Well, at least one free cup a week for 24 years.) In 2019, the day was expanded to "Queso Season," and queso was celebrated all of September. Not only was free queso available in-store, but also by using the Moe Rewards app, online ordering, and catering. Moe Rewards members also got an extra 100 bonus points for every purchase of queso they made during the month.

How will Syracuse coach Adrian Autry use his backcourt depth? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

Basketball season is fast approaching and readers of the Mailbox continue to fix their focus on the upcoming season.

This week’s Mailbox includes questions about Syracuse’s bevy of backcourt players and a look at SU’s history with the ACC’s three new schools. And there’s one more question concerning the whereabouts of a former Orange great.

Let’s get started.

(If you have a question for the Mailbox, email it to mwaters@syracuse.com).

Q: If you look at Syracuse’s backcourt, JJ Starling, Kyle Cuffe and Chance Westry are coming back and then there are transfers Jaquan Carlos and Lucas Taylor, plus freshman Elijah Moore. That is six guards.

How do you see Adrian Autry allocating minutes with this much depth/talent? Could be a problem, but could be an asset. What’s your take?

Bill K.

Mike:
Syracuse coach Adrian Autry does have a lot of options at his disposal in terms of the backcourt heading into the 2024-25 season.

The departure of Judah Mintz, who started every game over the past two seasons at the point guard position, opens up a significant amount of playing time. Mintz logged just over 35 minutes per game last season.

Syracuse basketball on hand for 4-star Kiyan Anthony, who has 2 new visits scheduled (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball coaches continue to recruit 2025 four-star shooting guard Kiyan Anthony extremely hard, although other suitors remain in pursuit of the New York City product as well.

The 6-foot-5 Anthony, a senior at the powerhouse Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y., has the Orange in his top six, along with Ohio State, Auburn, Rutgers, Florida State and Southern California.

A top-30 national prospect in the 2025 cycle, Anthony received a scholarship offer from the 'Cuse staff in November of 2022. He took an official visit to Syracuse basketball in late October of last year, and Anthony has also officially visited fellow Atlantic Coast Conference school Florida State.

When the fall recruiting period commenced on September 4, Anthony conducted an in-home visit with the Orange coaching staff, according to 247Sports national analyst Dushawn London. This week, per the Instagram page of Long Island Lutheran, the Syracuse basketball staff was in attendance at an open gym, presumably for Anthony and perhaps other prospects with the Crusaders.

Post Malone says world’s best Italian restaurant is in Central New York (PS; Herbert)

Post Malone has performed all over the world, from the Super Bowl and “Saturday Night Live” in North America to concerts in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and South America. But nothing beats the food in his first home: Central New York.

The Grammy-nominated singer and rapper, who was born Austin Richard Post in Syracuse, N.Y., and lived in Baldwinsville until he was 10 years old, returned to his hometown over the weekend to perform a sold-out concert at the Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview. It was his first concert in the Salt City since a 2015 performance at Syracuse University, before he became globally famous as “Post Malone.”

“I just wanted to say how --ing grateful and honored I am to be back in this --ing amazing town, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you so very much,” Posty told the crowd Saturday night. “From Baldwinsville, we went around the world --ing twice.”

While in town, Malone made headlines when he stopped at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que for some pre-show BBQ. He told local radio station TK99 (WTKW, 99.5/105. FM) that he also got some of Tully’s famous chicken tenders and saw family members that still live in the area, including in Sandy Pond, Rochester and Baldwinsville.

“Whenever I come up I make it a goal to try and see everybody,” he said in an interview with TK99 host Gomez, days after the Syracuse concert. “It’s just a big family.”

No. 1 pick: Apple orchard in Upstate NY voted best in the U.S. (PS; House)

For the fifth time, a beloved Upstate New York farm has been crowned America’s best apple orchard.

Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards, a farm with 113-year-old roots in picturesque LaFayette, has been dubbed the nation’s No. 1 apple orchard of 2024 by USA Today’s 10Best. The orchard is a staple on 10Best’s yearly list and was also voted the top orchard in 2015, 2017, 2020 and 2021.

“There is nothing like a crisp fall day on the farm, warm cider donut in hand, surrounded by friends and family among the apple trees,” said Marianne Brennan, Beak & Skiff’s chief marketing officer. “We are so fortunate to have the enthusiasm and loyalty of our customers, some of whom have visited the orchard for decades.”

Beak & Skiff was the only New York orchard to make 10Best’s roundup, which included farms ranging from Washington state’s largest orchard to a North Carolina farm that grows over 22 varieties of apples.
