Welcome to World Architecture Day!

World Architecture Day celebrates architecture and the commitment of architects to the world's societies, ecosystems, and cities. Created by the International Union of Architects (UIA), a "global federation of national associations of architects," it was first held in 1985 and originally took place on the first Monday in July. At the International Union of Architects Congress in Barcelona, Spain, in 1996, it was moved to the first Monday of October, to coincide with World Habitat Day. Some countries observe the day on other dates during the year. Each year the UIA comes up with a different theme that participants can tailor their events to. Common events include forums, symposia, panel discussions, conferences, and exhibitions.

Architecture consists of using engineering and art to design buildings and other structures. Houses, churches, hotels, office buildings, stadiums, roads, bridges, and tunnels are some of the structures it is used for. Various architecture styles can be found around the world. Ancient civilizations used architecture: Egyptians built large temples and the Great Pyramids of Giza, and the Greeks and Romans used laws and symmetry to create what became known as Classical architecture.

Star Syracuse freshman Donnie Freeman talks pressure, fitting in and how he’s doing so far (PS; $; Ditota)

He was ranked No. 6 in ESPN’s high school basketball recruiting class of 2024, the highest-ranked Syracuse player since Carmelo Anthony.

Johnathan Givony, ESPN’s esteemed NBA draft evaluator, predicts he will go No. 15 in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Donnie Freeman is fully aware of the hype attached to his name and his game. He is a child of the social media era. That stuff, he said, is hard to avoid.

But on Saturday morning, as he sat courtside to speak with a Syracuse.com reporter during Eric Devendorf’s basketball camp for kids, Freeman explained that he feels no pressure from rankings or outside influences to perform during his freshman year.

What he feels, instead, is something akin to responsibility.

“The pressure isn’t really, like, performing because honestly I feel like that’s going to take care of itself,” he said. “I feel like I’m pretty talented so that’ll take care of itself. The biggest thing is kind of Coach Red, my agent, my family, my teammates - the pressure is really just making them proud and making everything come together.”

At 6-foot-9 and a long, lean 205 pounds, Freeman looks every bit the part of a Syracuse basketball forward.

He spent most of last summer playing for the Bahamas in a FIBA qualifying tournament for the Paris Olympics. The Bahamas did not make the field and Freeman played sparingly. He believed he should have played more, he said, though he no longer dwells on it.

He has learned to embrace the experience. He played with and against grown men, most of them professionals. Those players, he acknowledged, were bigger, stronger and faster than he was. And day by day, as he competed with them in practices, he picked up some of the subtle ways they worked to improve their games.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star recruits who are playing in Overtime Elite this season (itlh; Adler)

Overtime Elite will soon commence its 2024-25 regular season, and several prospects who hold scholarship offers from the Syracuse basketball staff are suiting up in the Atlanta-based professional league in the upcoming campaign.

According to the league's Web site, there are again eight teams participating in Overtime Elite ("OTE"), with some of them based in Atlanta and others in different locations around the country. Currently, OTE is conducting preseason play, and it looks like the 2024-25 regular season will commence on November 1.

As far as I can tell, three players in Overtime Elite for the 2024-25 term have received offers from the Orange, while a fourth prospect has received some level of interest from the 'Cuse.

Let's have a further look.

Syracuse basketball targets are suiting up in the Overtime Elite professional league.

Shon Abaev
The 6-foot-8 Abaev is a four-star wing/forward and a top-25 national prospect in the 2025 class. He was offered by the Orange staff in late April of this year and took an official visit to the Hill in late August. Abaev is a standout senior at the Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. I believe that this program is operating as Fear of God Athletics in Overtime Elite, per the league's Web site.

Syracuse Basketball: National expert names 5-star Donnie Freeman a top-10 freshman (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball seeks to return to the NCAA Tournament in the upcoming season following a three-year absence, and freshman power forward Donnie Freeman will prove a huge part of the Orange's mission.

The 6-foot-9, 205-pound Freeman, who is from Washington, D.C., put forth a stellar senior season at the powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He earned a bunch of awards and honors, suited up in several All-America showcases this past spring, and finished as a consensus five-star prospect who was ranked as high as No. 6 nationally in the 2024 class.

But now Freeman is on the Hill, and he's competing at the collegiate level. There's no question that his senior term at IMG, and his prior high school career at St. John's College High School in D.C., have helped prepare him for his career with the 'Cuse.

And national experts are forecasting that Freeman will track as one of the country's best freshmen in the upcoming 2024-25 season, which begins in less than a month for the Orange.

Zebb's will permanently close next weekend after serving burgers to Central New York for decades.(Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

Beloved retro burger grill known for its toppings bar to close permanently next weekend (PS; Miller)

After decades of serving up juicy burgers with its nostalgic, build-your-own toppings bar, Zebb’s Deluxe Grill & Bar in Mattydale is days away from flipping its last patty.

Chris Damick, who bought the last remaining Zebb’s in the old Kmart Plaza two years ago, told his employees Friday night that the restaurant would close for good next Sunday, Oct. 13.

“So many memories have been made here over the years,” Damick said Saturday morning before opening. “But the last year has not been easy. We tried to make it work, but we just couldn’t. It was a very tough decision to make.”

Known for its retro charm, fresh-cut fries and oversized milkshakes, the restaurant had long been a favorite for locals craving a taste of classic Americana.

For many, Zebb’s was more than just a place to eat—it was a time capsule of eye-catching checkered floors and old-time movie posters under neon lights.

Richard Zdyb opened Zebb’s back in the late 1980s. At one time, the local chain had two restaurants in Rochester and one in New Hartford. Zdyb sold it to Brian Bergeron in 2006. As the business fell off, Damick took over in 2022.

The Mattydale location is the lone survivor, despite it being hidden in the back of a mostly-deserted shopping plaza. A year ago, Damick said business seemed to pick up for the first time since the Covid pandemic. He had hoped an entrepreneur would scoop up what’s now known as the Mattydale Shopping Center.

That never happened, illustrated by the parking lot that’s dotted with deep potholes.

Trendy East Syracuse ‘vibe dining’ hotspot quietly closes its doors for good (PS; Miller)

A restaurant known for blending from-scratch Italian cuisine with Vegas-like lighting and music served its last meal Saturday night.

Lala Lu, which opened in December 2022 in the former location of Grimaldi’s, has closed its doors.

Owner Danielle Mercuri told her staff Saturday would be the final dinner service.

“We took a chance on syracuse, bringing something super wild and creative,” she said Sunday afternoon. “We have our highs, and then we never know what’s going to happen the next day. It’s a finicky business. I give accolades to all of us in this industry and this community. Damn, I give accolades to anyone that even wants to try to be in this business because it is a major grind.”

Mercuri opened Lala Lu just as food prices skyrocketed and labor costs were rising coming out of the Covid pandemic. She opened Lala Lu while also running her popular Rise N Shine Diner on Westcott Street. Two other restaurants she owned at the time — Loded and Lobster Babe — have since closed.

Lala Lu and Loded were among several local businesses with outstanding sales tax debts in Onondaga County.

Mercuri said she has paid the debt and continues to pay penalties and interest. She said today the tax debt did not factor in her decision to close Lala Lu. She blamed the economy forcing consumers to cut back on spending to dine out.

Mercuri said she may rebrand the Carrier Circle location as an event space or perhaps another Rise N Shine diner.

Mercuri thanked the Lala Lu customers who became regulars and the first-timers who visited in for special occasions.

“Our brand is about fun. We tried to do something super unique,” she said. “I put my heart and soul into this place. I am absolutely devastated that it didn’t work here.”
