Welcome to Love Your Body Day!
The entertainment, cosmetics, fashion, and dieting industries, and media such as television and magazines, pressure young women to achieve an unattainable body image. They objectify and sexualize them, tell them their primary function is to be admired and desired for their looks, and tell them that their body always needs improvement. The beauty criteria imposed upon women and girls are narrow, unrealistic, and sometimes even hazardous to health. Love Your Body Day is for fighting back.

Started by the NOW Foundation in 1998, Love Your Body Day is a day that challenges "the unrealistic beauty standards and gender stereotypes promoted by the media, Hollywood and the fashion, cosmetics and diet industries," and "a day when women of all sizes, colors, ages and abilities come together to celebrate self-acceptance and to promote positive body image." Events that raise awareness about body image and women's health issues are hosted across the United States by NOW advocates and women's advocates. Since 2012, Love Your Body Day has been part of the NOW Foundation's Love Your Body Campaign.

Where was Syracuse men’s basketball picked to finish in the ACC preseason poll? (PS; $; Carlson)

The Syracuse men’s basketball team finished last season in a three-way tie for fifth place in the ACC. A preseason poll of media members conducted by the league expects the Orange to have an even more difficult time this year.

Syracuse was picked 11th out of 18 teams in this year’s preseason media poll, which was released on Tuesday.

The Orange did not have a player named to either of the league’s five-player All-ACC preseason teams. The preseason rankings and awards were picked by a panel of selected media members, including reporters who cover each of the league’s 18 teams.

Three teams received at least one vote projecting them to win the league -- Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest. Only Clemson had multiple players on the All-ACC First and Second Teams.

Last year’s ACC Player of the Year, North Carolina’s Ricky Davis, was picked as the preseason MVP, receiving 40 of 54 votes. Davis also led the conference in scoring last season with 21.2 points per game. Duke freshman Cooper Flagg received 10 votes, followed by three for Wake Forest’s Hunter Sallis, who was also a member of last year’s All-ACC First Team.

The top three vote-getters in the POY voting were also members of the preseason All-Conference First Team along with Notre Dame’s Markus Burton (last year’s Rookie of the Year) and Miami’s Nijel Pack 37.

Syracuse finished 20-12 (11-9) last season but missed the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season and underwent a roster overhaul.

ACC predicted order of finish 2024-25: Virginia, NC State overrated; Louisville underrated in preseason poll (cbssports.com; Salerno)
The ACC released its preseason predicted order of finish on Tuesday ahead of the 2024-25 college basketball season. Duke was picked to win in the annual preseason poll, and North Carolina star guard RJ Davis was given conference preseason Player of the Year honors after spurning the 2024 NBA Draft to return to school.

Much of the buzz surrounding the Blue Devils orbits around the arrival of former five-star forward Cooper Flagg -- the projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. But it's not just Flagg who makes this group the favorite on sports betting apps to win the ACC. Tyrese Proctor bypassed the NBA Draft for the second consecutive season and his return will give coach Jon Scheyer a steady presence on both ends of the floor. Caleb Foster is a potential breakout candidate after coming off the bench last season as a freshman.

North Carolina was picked to finish second, followed by Wake Forest, Clemson and Virginia. The Tar Heels are coming off a loss to Alabama in the Sweet 16, while the Tigers reached the Elite Eight for the second time in program history.

Here is the full poll, followed by overrated and underrated observations from the predicted order of finish.

Overrated: Virginia
Predicted finish: 5th

Tony Bennett is one of the best coaches in college basketball, but the Cavs' offense was dreadful to watch last season. They averaged 62.9 points per game -- good enough for No. 345 among all Division l teams. In Virginia's final game of the 2023-24 season -- a loss to Colorado State in the First Four -- the team scored 42 points, which included a 14-point first half.

The reason for the lack of offense comes down to play style. Virginia does plan to change its offense to a more up-tempo style of play this season, but it will take some time. Virginia finished third in the ACC last year behind North Carolina and Duke, and there are doubts they can live up to its preseason billing. Betting odds to win conference +1800

Underrated: Louisville

Predicted finish: 9th

After two lackluster seasons under Kenny Payne, Louisville hired Pat Kelsey to bring some life into a once proud program. Kelsey turned to the transfer portal in an attempt to overhaul the roster quickly.

Kiyan Anthony Syracuse Update: Deadline Finalized for Carmelo Anthony’s Son to Make the Big Decision (essentiallysports.com; Pande)

The big news just might be on the way! Carmelo Anthony’s son Kiyan Anthony excited the fans when he shortlisted six schools to take the next step in his basketball journey. However, what stood out for fans was that Kiyan, while visiting Melo’s alma mater Syracuse, posed with the program’s jersey along with his father and the coach. Hence, many were sure that Kiyan would be choosing the Orange. But as of now, Kiyan remains undecided and has screened his list down to three schools, while deciding on a date to reveal his final decision.

On Tuesday, Kiyan spoke to NBA draft analyst Krysten Peek about the process of what goes into selecting a program and the time he would take to do so. As of now, he has narrowed down his list to three schools: Syracuse, USC, and Auburn.

“Well, I am actually real close to making a decision. I am looking to commit in the first two weeks of November. That’s right on the corner… What coaches believe in hitting me up like you know.. what place I could fit in, who’s there in my position. And what they are telling me like where they could see me fitting now and I feel like that could really go into the factor for me coming into school and also like the history they have and what it is: being good in the past few years… I think that’s what goes into it,”
Kiyan revealed.

As per reports, Kiyan was previously looking at Auburn, Rutgers, USC, Syracuse, Florida State, and Ohio State. The four-star recruit was keen on taking trips to USC on September 24 and Rutgers on October 4. Post that, as per 247Sports, Kiyan wanted to take a second official trip to Ohio State, Auburn, and Syracuse. Going by his recent statement, it can be adjudged that he is done with his visits and now wants to choose from among Syracuse, USC, and Auburn for the class of 2025.

Syracuse men’s basketball: preseason mock drafts remain high on forward Donnie Freeman (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

A new Syracuse Orange men’s basketball year begins just weeks from now, and one new player’s potential continues to look incredibly promising heading into the season.

Donnie Freeman, who will begin his first year with the Orange as a consensus five-star recruit, remains at least a solid first rounder in two recent NBA 2025 mock draft updates.

Notably, Freeman projects to go No. 12 overall according to The Athletic’s most updated 2025 mock draft. Among ESPN’s current list of top-100 big board prospects for the 2025 draft, Freeman is as No. 26.

Here is what The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie had to say about Freeman:

“Freeman was a riser later in his high school career, a late bloomer physically who was skinny (and still is, to some extent) before adding a bit of weight and a lot of twitchy explosiveness. The idea here is a big wing/forward hybrid who already has shown real ability to knock down midrange jumpers and is seeming to add the ability to knock down 3s. On top of that, he’s wiry and has a ton of bounce. He will put up some fun highlights throughout the season.”
“Freeman does have a bit of a way to go, though. The handle is going to have to improve, as is his overall defensive awareness. But if you’re looking for an upside swing in this class, Freeman is one of the names scouts get most excited about before anyone has played this year.”

The “late riser” label for Freeman is certainly accurate. Throughout the spring, he continued to rise among the 2024 prospect rankings and likewise did the same in some of the notable mock drafts out there.

The six-foot-nine forward brings a lot of NBA promise to the table. Wing-sized players who have the athletic ability and versatility to switch between positions, offer some sort of outside shooting threat and possess the pop to make a play individually is one of the most coveted skill sets teams are looking for in today’s league.

For Freeman, there are two critical big picture questions you’d imagine scouts are asking themselves.

First, what is his projected destiny as an NBA defender? Can he guard on-ball one-on-one, either just enough or in a high-impact way? How about as a switch defender? With his size at the four, can be really make a contribution in passing lanes or in the paint? His athleticism is intriguing and he’ll have the baseline to not get attacked at least, but his upside defensively is a wildcard.

On offense, shooting will be the important swing skill as with most prospects looking to go pro. While he theoretically could slide down to the five or even up occasionally to the three in more unconventional lineups, he’s looking more like a power forward. Consistent outside shooting is desired in the NBA if said player is not a true five. If Freeman’s improvement is an outside shooter is legit, that would raise his ceiling a ton among the 2025 class.

Freeman will clearly have his chance to make these mock draft projections legitimate during Syracuse’s upcoming 2024-25 season. While he likely won’t need to be the primary option and will fit more within the concept of the team, Freeman’s upside is valued highly and his production will absolutely be critical in whatever role he ends up in for the Orange this year.

Tyler Lydon (No. 17 in 2017) was the last Syracuse player to be taken in the first round of the NBA draft. Michael Carter-Williams in 2013 (No. 11) was the last Syracuse player to be selected in the top-14.

6 New York breweries, including 1 in Onondaga County, win medals at America’s biggest beer fest (PS; $; Cazentre)

Six New York state craft brewers took home medals this weekend at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, billed as the country’s largest “professional beer competition.”

One of the coveted medals went to Heritage Hill Brewhouse in Pompey.

It won a silver medal in the dessert / pastry stout category for its Coconut Cluster. That‘s a strong (8.9% alcohol) Imperial Stout whose ingredient list includes coconut cream, Tahitian vanilla beans and Mexican cocoa nibs in addition to New York-produced malt and hops.

That same beer won the prize at the Best New York State Farm Beer in the 2024 New York State Craft Beer Competition in March. It also won a gold medal in the pastry stout category in that contest.

In 2019, Heritage Hill took home the bronze medal at the GABF for its “Cherry Valley Farmhouse”, a Belgian-style fruit beer.

Heritage Hill opened in 2018 at the 179-year-old Palladino Farms at 3149 Sweet Road, high in the hills of Pompey. It has since opened a tasting room in North Syracuse.

Coconut Cluster is currently on tap and in cans at both Heritage Hill locations.

Heritage Hill owner Dan Palladino credited his brewers, Billie Smith and Terry Boiselle, as well as the state’s craft beer industry.

“This is a testament to the strength of the New York Craft Brewery industry and the quality of New York grown ingredients,” Palladino said, noting that Heritage Hill lives up to its status as a farm brewery using New York ingredients. “We would like to thank the New York State Brewers Association and all organizations and State leaders who have worked hard to build a strong and growing industry that has benefited the entire chain from farmer, to maltster, to brewer, to consumer.”

Heritage Hill staff could not be present at the awards ceremony Saturday in Denver, but their medal was picked up by state brewers association director Paul Leone. He delivered it the brewery today.
