Welcome to Cyber Monday!

Cyber Monday takes place on the Monday after Thanksgiving, and is the largest online shopping day of the year in the United States. The term was coined by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation, while working with Scott Silverman and others, at Shop.org. In 2005, shortly before Thanksgiving, Shop.org put out a press release highlighting the growing amount of sales that took place on the day. Research from 2004 had shown that the day was the 12th largest online shopping day of the year. After the term made its debut, it has been used as a marketing tool by retailers, and the public has embraced the day. As of 2017, sales have increased each year since its inception, transforming the day from the 12th largest online shopping day, to the largest. In 2006 there were $610 million of sales on the day, and in 2016 there were $3.45 billion in sales, marking the first time online sales had passed $3 billion on a single day in the United States. Half or more of the sales from the day are from work computers, suggesting that consumers still want to do more shopping after Black Friday, want to take advantage of the days' deals, or want to hide the gifts they are buying for family members.

“In a Little Bit of Pain”: Kiyan Anthony Escapes Huge Injury Scare as Syracuse Commit Shines in Season Opener (essentiallysports.com; Chalayat)

The season opener, a high-flying dunk, and then a hard fall that nearly missed what could’ve been a nightmare. That’s exactly what happened to Kiyan Anthony, Syracuse’s commit and rising basketball star, on Saturday night. As Long Island Lutheran Boys Varsity Elite tipped off their 2024–2025 season, the baller came so close to a disaster that could’ve sidelined him for the year.

Watch What’s Trending Now!

Thankfully, though, it looks like the scare isn’t as bad as it seemed. LuHi opened their campaign against St. Joseph’s Collegiate in dominant fashion, rolling to a 74–35 win at Visscher Gym. The team came in with national championship hopes and wasted no time.

Anthony scored 16 points, while Dylan Mingo dropped 14, and his brother, Kayden Mingo, nearly had a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and five steals. The guard started off great with a soaring dunk in the fourth quarter. However, then, just as he was about to bag another basket (which he did manage to score), he got fouled mid-air by St. Joseph’s Nate Blenman, fell hard on his back, and had to be carried off the court.

How to watch and key storylines as Syracuse basketball travels to No. 7 Tennessee (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball will look to end a three-game skid against another Orange-clad school when the 'Cuse heads to No. 7 Tennessee on Tuesday night as part of this season's SEC/ACC Challenge.

The Orange (4-2) most recently defeated long-time local foe Cornell, at the JMA Wireless Dome, by 10 points last Wednesday evening. The 'Cuse fell behind early against the Big Red but managed to come away with an 82-72 triumph, buoyed by impressive performances from freshmen Donnie Freeman, a 2024 five-star power forward, and Elijah Moore, a 2024 four-star shooting guard.

To date in the young 2024-25 campaign, every one of the Orange's contests has been decided by 10 points or fewer. It will be interesting to see what the rotation entails for head coach Adrian Autry versus the Volunteers (7-0), given the comments he made after the 'Cuse beat Cornell.

In their short all-time series together, Tennessee is 4-3 against Syracuse basketball and has won three straight, including a 73-56 decision in November of last year at the Allstate Maui Invitational in Honolulu.

Syracuse Basketball: Adrian Autry may cut rotation to 6 or 7; here's who should play (itlh; Adler)
After defeating long-time local foe Cornell this past Wednesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome, Syracuse basketball sits at 4-2 overall and will head to No. 7 Tennessee this Tuesday evening as part of this season's SEC/ACC Challenge.

The Orange hasn't looked overly impressive thus far in the young stages of the 2024-25 campaign, as the 'Cuse has played six straight games, winning four of them, that were all decided by 10 points or fewer.

The optimist in me says that it's somewhat encouraging Syracuse basketball is prevailing in close games. The pessimist in me says that the Orange emerging victorious in so many tight contests, when it should likely be blowing out some of these opponents, is a cause for concern.

In his post-game press conference following the team's triumph over the Big Red, Syracuse basketball head coach Adrian Autry touched on a variety of topics. Among other things, per posts on X from the account Cuse Sports Talk, Autry said players who aren't giving their full effort will see their court time reduced, and he may shrink his rotation to six or seven guys.

No. 7 Tennessee hosts Freeman and Syracuse (lancasteronline.com; AP)

Syracuse Orange (4-2) at Tennessee Volunteers (7-0)

Knoxville, Tennessee; Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. EST

BOTTOM LINE: Syracuse takes on No. 7 Tennessee after Donnie Freeman scored 23 points in Syracuse's 82-72 victory against the Cornell Big Red.

The Volunteers are 4-0 on their home court. Tennessee is the top team in the SEC in team defense, giving up 54.7 points while holding opponents to 33.6% shooting.

The Orange play their first true road game after going 4-2 to begin the season. Syracuse is the ACC leader with 39.3 rebounds per game led by Freeman averaging 9.2.

Tennessee's average of 9.0 made 3-pointers per game this season is just 0.5 more made shots on average than the 8.5 per game Syracuse allows. Syracuse averages 26.3 more points per game (81.0) than Tennessee allows to opponents (54.7).

TOP PERFORMERS: Chaz Lanier is scoring 17.7 points per game and averaging 2.4 rebounds for the Volunteers.

JJ Starling is scoring 19.8 points per game and averaging 4.5 rebounds for the Orange.

Syracuse men’s basketball: Flashing back to G-Mac’s Scranton Homecoming (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

A crowd of 8,209 would look very meager inside the Carrier Dome, but on the final Tuesday night of 2005, it was easier to consider that crowd to be the group that didn’t have to make the two-and-a-half-hour drive up I-81 for a Syracuse Orange basketball game.

Instead, they packed like sardines into the then-Wachovia Arena, filling the building to watch their hometown hero and National Champion suit up for SU. And did he ever deliver.

Gerry McNamara - affectionately known as the “Prince of Scranton” - put up a stat line of 20 points, seven assists, and five steals in his return home, leading Syracuse to an 86-52 victory over Towson. His first make of the night was one of four trifectas, giving the Orange an early 9-0 lead. After a shaky stretch that tied the game at 11, Gerry and SU settled in and took control for the rest of the night.

I was much too young myself to have a personal stake in the game, but it’s an understatement to say the opposite was true for many in attendance. Professional sports in Northeast Pennsylvania were on the rise in the early 2000s, and Gerry’s emergence as a college basketball legend only added to that trend.

What an early discovery in a Syracuse lab could mean for late-stage breast cancer (PS;

In a small Syracuse lab, cancer researchers believe they’ve uncovered a new use for a common anti-overdose drug that eases the suffering of people with breast cancer that has metastasized into their bones.

Scientist Bryan Margulies, who helped start the Upstate Cancer Center, has been experimenting for years with a modified form of naloxone. The parent drug, commonly known as Narcan, has been approved since 1971 to reverse the effects of opioids.

It turns out that modified naloxone has promise as a miracle worker, of sorts, for people with breast cancer that has spread into bones, Margulies said.

The drug can help spur the growth of new, healthy bone.

Not only that, but if administered in a precise dose in a targeted spot in the bone, the drug can, somehow, kill the cancer, too, his research shows.

Taking over-the-counter Narcan doesn’t impact cancer; it needs to be a specific derivative called N-ally noroxymorphone hydrochloride, delivered in a clinical setting at a controlled rate, to have an effect.

Sorry for your loss Bill. Hopefully this drug will help stop some of these tragedies from happening in the future.
