Starling, the Orange’s leading scorer through the first six games of the season, broke his hand during the team’s practice session the day before taking on the Volunteers here at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville. Syracuse missed Starling’s 19.8 points per game and his ability to defend his position; not to mention his leadership and experience. Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said he didn’t like hearing that Starling would miss the game because “we had prepared so hard to guard that.’’ But Barnes admitted that SU coach Adrian Autry’s reaction to Starling’s injury was probably much different. “I know what he was going through,’’ Barnes said. In all honesty, Starling’s absence didn’t impact the outcome of Tuesday’s game. The Volunteers, ranked No. 3 in this week’s AP Top 25 poll, had too much for the Orange. But with Starling out for an undetermined amount of time; Autry said there was no timetable for his return yet, Syracuse must figure out how to compensate for his absence. “JJ’s one of the best guards in the country,’’ Autry said. “(He’s) a guy that is explosive. A guy that can get to the basket. A guy that can make plays not only for himself, but for others. “He averages 19 (points) a game,’’ Autry added. “He does a lot for us.’’ In Tuesday’s game against Tennessee, Autry started Lucas Taylor, a transfer from Georgia State, at the off-guard position. Autry went with Taylor for two main reasons – his experience as a senior and his defensive ability. Taylor would defend Tennessee’s high-scoring guard Chaz Lanier. ... Syracuse men’s basketball: three takeaways from the 96-70 loss to No. 3 Tennessee (TNIAAM; De Guzman) Welcome, friends. This is the alternate reality. Syracuse is now a football school. The Syracuse Orange traveled to Knoxville for the SEC/ACC challenge. The No. 3 Tennessee Volunteers started off shooting slowly, but a convincing and dominating second half put the game to bed quickly. Tennessee eased its way to a 96-70 victory, dropping Syracuse to a 4-3 record to start the season. Here’s our three takeaways from Syracuse’s biggest loss of the season so far: What is the basketball equivalent of “If you’re a goaltender, TEND THE GOAL!”? I imagine it goes along the lines of, “If you’re a basketball player, take care of the basketball!” You cannot give Tennessee the ball so freely like Syracuse did. And it wasn’t as if Tennessee was playing other-worldly defense. The Vols simply took advantage of lazy and simple mistakes that Syracuse had on the offensive end. The Orange could have been leading at the end of the first half, given the Tennessee shooting performance. But the lack of ball security started the Tennessee snowball and gave the Volunteers a comfortable cushion to explode into during the second half. ... (youtube; podcast; Rocky Top Insider) RTI Instant Reaction: Talking Tennessee’s Huge Win Over Syracuse (With a Bit of Football Mixed In) REACTION: Syracuse Basketball Gets DESTROYED at Tennessee Volunteers | Syracuse Orange Podcast (yioutube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse) Syracuse Orange Basketball got destroyed by the Tennessee Volunteers in the ACC/SEC Challenge. Adrian Autry's squad was just completely outmatched, with only freshman Elijah "Choppa" Moore turning in a good performance for the Orange. Chris Bell missed three straight free throws, and continues to be a liability on the floor. Jaquan Carlos played an absurd 37 minutes. The Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency voted unanimously to grant the exemptions to the developers of the Home2 Suites By Hilton under construction at 241 Elwood Davis Road. The breaks will save the developers $884,812 in property taxes over 10 years, $765,920 in sales taxes on construction materials and $105,000 in state mortgage recording tax. The property tax exemption is not 100%. The developers will pay $803,111 in property taxes over the 10 years of the agreement with the agency. That’s $884,812 less than they would pay without the exemption. In October, County Executive Ryan McMahon announced the county was awarding the project a $400,000 grant as part of a new program that incentivizes developers to build more hotels in the county. The money will come from the money the county collects from its room occupancy tax. The hotel is being developed by the Mangano and Emmi families, which own several properties, including a Homewood Suites and a Hampton Inn, in the Seventh North Street and Buckley Road area of Salina. Kevin McAuliffe, an attorney representing the developers, told the county agency that there is a severe shortage of hotel rooms available in the Syracuse area during big events such as graduation weekend at Syracuse University. ...
