Welcome to Festivus!

Festivus is a holiday that shuns the commercialism and pressures of the Christmas season, and takes place on December 23 each year. It was invented by writer Daniel O'Keefe, and originally celebrated by his family. The holiday permeated American culture after O'Keefe's son, Dan O'Keefe, wrote the holiday into an episode of Seinfeld titled "The Strike," which was first broadcasted on December 18, 1997. In the episode, the holiday was created by George Costanza's father Frank, and was celebrated at Frank and Estelle Costanza's house, with the attendance of Kramer, Jerry, Elaine, George, George's boss Kruger, and two men that Cramer invited that Elaine had been trying to avoid.

Some movers and shakers in ACC power rankings as ACC returns to conference play (PS; Waters)

In an unusual twist to the schedule, eight ACC teams had conference games scheduled this past weekend.

The four games solidified our previously held opinions of the ACC’s best teams. They include Duke, Clemson and SMU, who all won by wide margins on Saturday.

The fourth conference game pitted Louisville against Florida State in Tallahassee. We might have learned something about the Cardinals as they notched an impressive road win over Florida State and as a result became the biggest riser in this week’s ACC Power Rankings.

Another ACC team with a significant win this past week was North Carolina, which after coming up short several times finally got a quality win over a ranked team.

Here’s a look at this week’s Power Rankings:

1. Duke

Record:
10-2 (2-0)

Last week’s ranking: No. 1

Last week’s results: Win 68-47 over George Mason; Win 82-56 over Georgia Tech

This week’s schedule: No games scheduled

Adrian Autry's Coaching Future: Did Syracuse Make a Mistake? (lastwordonsports.com; Noftz)

It’s no secret that Jim Boeheim did not have as much success at the end of his career. However, after 47 seasons at Syracuse, he coached for 1,116 wins, five Final Four appearances, and a national championship in 2003. He will go down as one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time. After going 33-32 in his final two seasons, Boehiem retired and handed the reins to Adrian Autry. Syracuse is not content with 20 wins, but Autry had a successful opening season. The trouble lies with the second season, as they sit at 5-6 with one non-conference game remaining and little hope of reviving their season. That is well below the standard at Syracuse, so what is Adrian Autry’s coaching future? Will Syracuse be patient?

Adrian Autry’s Coaching Future: Did Syracuse Make a Mistake?

Power Conference Struggles

Syracuse has only had a losing record once in the 21st century. That usually requires a victory versus a power conference opponent before January. So far in 2024, Syracuse is 0-6 against power conference opponents. Their NET strength of schedule ranks 29th in the country so far, so it could be understandable. However, Syracuse doesn’t have acceptable losses. Georgetown and Notre Dame (without Markus Burton) were winnable games they failed to finish off.

Adrian Autry likely needs time, but these mounting losses against quality opponents are a problem. They’ve shown an inability to win games with or without start players like JJ Starling, who has missed considerable time with an injury. Adrian Autry’s coaching career will be short-lived if they don’t find ways to win those games. ACC play will provide them with many opportunities to pick up some wins, but they must show considerable improvement if Autry hopes to keep his job after two seasons.

Recruiting

After getting Kiyan Anthony to commit to Syracuse, Autry continues to achieve lofty recruiting marks. According to 247sports.com, Syracuse ranks eighth in recruiting for 2025 as of December 22. In 2024, he obtained 5-star Donnie Freeman, who has been one of the top freshmen in the ACC this season. The class finished 33rd. The issue has not been recruiting talent.

For Adrian Autry, this is both good and bad news. People still want to play under him despite their struggles. It is certainly a compliment to Adrian Autry that so many young men want to be coached by him. He clearly shows both students and parents that he can mold them into their best selves. The problem is he hasn’t established a winning culture. The team is very talented, but they struggle to win against teams like Youngstown State, Le Moyne, and Colgate and lose to every power conference team. He has to prove to Syracuse that he can win with talent. There is no point in recruiting blue-chip talent if you can’t win with them.

Autry needs time to build his Syracuse program (tinyurl.co,m; Stechschulte)

Jim Boeheim became very good at many parts of being a basketball coach during his long tenure at Syracuse. One of them, which is often only referred to anecdotally (“ten bleeping games”), is how he managed press conferences. And to be sure, he absolutely managed them.

Yes, there were times when Boeheim’s true feelings came through, but those were mostly a reflection of his competitiveness. Two seasons ago, when Benny Williams missed a mid-season game that the Orange lost, the first question after the game was about Williams’ absence and not the game SU had just lost. Boeheim fired back a heated response at the reporter because, in that moment, he was more concerned about the loss of the game than the player.

Many nights, Boeheim walked to the podium, looking at the printed box score in his hand in preparation of giving rote answers that were traditional concerns for the team. A perceived weakness of the 2-3 zone led to frequent variations of “we didn’t rebound well”, whether the team won or lost. “We missed some shots” was a standby, too, sometimes specifying free throws, which has been schtick since the mid-1980’s.

The old coach was a master of “magician’s patter”, directing your attention over there while his other hand was performing the mechanics of the trick. In other words, Boeheim would often say a lot of words that didn’t necessarily mean much, just offering general basketball platitudes in answering questions about the recently transpired events.

As such, the responsibility of figuring out what Boeheim really meant belonged to the listener. He delivered a favorite in February 2016 after SU suffered a 66-52 loss at home to Pitt, who also doubled them up on the glass, 40-20. After the game, Boeheim spoke about how “Tyler” needed to rebound better.

The common perception was that he was talking about perpetual whipping boy Tyler Roberson, who had four rebounds (and no points) in 25 minutes. But, was Boeheim actually calling out Tyler Lydon, who had led the Orange that night with 21 points… and had one rebound in 31 minutes?

In other words, some of what the head coach is saying is the real message while much of what is quoted is just filler.

Which brings me to Boeheim player, assistant, and successor, Adrian Autry.
It’s been a bumpy 21 months since he took the job, saying he would “be my own coach” and not a continuation of his predecessor, including giving the most obvious evidence of that change by switching to primarily man-to-man defense.

Syracuse men's basketball: takeaways from 87-60 loss to Maryland (TNIAAM; Federman)

The Syracuse Orange lost to Maryland inside the Barclays Center, 87-60 on Saturday afternoon. The Terps were led by 24 points from Selton Mighuel and a 17-point, 11-assist double double from Ja’Kobi Gillespie. The Orange trailed by as many as 38, never led, and had few bright spots outside of Elijah Moore’s 16 points.

Here are a few takeaways from what was an absolute bloodbath.

Lineup Issues

Before the game even started, Syracuse was disfunctional. The Orange submitted a starting lineup of Jaquan Carlos, Chris Bell, Jyare Davis, Donnie Freemab, and Eddie Lampkin. But when it came time to announce the starting groups, Elijah Moore was sitting on the bench, waiting to be introduced, while Davis was standing up and clapping for his teammates.

When asked about it in the press conference, Red Autry paused for a moment, and then told the honest truth.

“There wasn’t an idea behind it,” Autry said. “It was something that was miscommunicated, it was something that happened, so we had to start off the game that way.”

Rather than taking a technical foul and starting Moore, Autry begrudgingly sent Davis out onto the floor for the opening tip-off. Within a minute, Syracuse was down 5-0, and Moore checked into the game.

Chris Bell is not confident

Earlier in the week, Jim Boeheim went on Cuse Sports Talk and aired out his grievances with Chris Bell’s poor shooting. Bell has gone from one of the nation’s best shooters, hitting 41.7% of his attempts last year, to being a laughingstock from behind the arc.

He’s down to 22.9% from three, and he attempted just one in the Orange’s loss to Maryland. He had a few opportunities that in past years, would’ve been shot within a split second of when the ball was passed to him, but he shied away from that on Saturday. Additionally, he’s down from 12.6 three-pointers attempted per 100 possessions all the way to 9.1.

Fizz Report Card: Maryland trounces Syracuse 87-60 in Gotham Classic (orangefizz.net; Shalam)

“Yes, this was the worst.”

That was SU head coach Adrian Autry’s response after being asked if Syracuse’s 87-60 loss to Maryland in the Gotham Classic was the worst defeat of his coaching career.

Ezoic
The Orange put up a mere 17 first half points, and struggled to get anything going on either side of the ball at the Barclays Center. So, what went wrong in Brooklyn? Let’s assign some grades based on the Orange’s performance.

Turnovers:

Ezoic
I rarely give a failing grade, but the Orange deserve it today after giving away the ball 21 times. The 21 turnovers are a season-high for the squad. It just seemed like from the jump that SU was out of rhythm. With guard J.J. Starling is still out with injury, there’s simply too much pressure on guard Jaquan Carlos. The Hofstra transfer is SU’s only ball-handler, playing a full 40 minutes today. Given that, Maryland attacked Carlos, stalling the Orange offense. Even head coach Adrian Autry noted SU’s lack of guard depth saying, “This game in particular, it would have been great to have another guard. They tired Jaquan Carlos.” Syracuse is simply too one dimensional right now, and it’s showing…Maryland really pressured the ball, they knew we only had one ball handler.” The Terps finished with 25 turnover points, which was the primary reason why the Orange fell behind so fast.

Syracuse Basketball doesn't just have a Talent Problem... IT HAS A COACHING PROBLEM (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Orange Basketball got thumped by the Maryland Terrapins 87-60 in Brooklyn yesterday. Syracuse Head Coach Adrian Autry deserves a lot of heat for his coaching this season. The Orange had the 27th rated commit class in the country on 247sports, but currently sit 135 in the NET rankings. Players like Chris Bell and Jaquan Carlos also bare a lot of the responsibility for the failures of this team this season.

Jackson Holzer recaps Syracuse's terrible performance against Maryland on this postgame reaction edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

MBB: Saturday Results 2024 Dec 21

With all of the excitement surrounding the first round of the college football playoffs, it's understandable if you forgot there were also some big ACC basketball games played today as well...

The first significant snow of the season blanketed Fayetteville, NY Monday, December 2, 2024. (N. Scott Trimble | strimble@syracuse.com)N. Scott Trimble

Central NY can expect a White Christmas as snow falls and bitter cold moves in (PS; Hayes)

Central New York can expect a White Christmas Wednesday thanks to spells of lake effect snow and bitterly cold temperatures moving into the area this weekend.

Lake effect snow is expected to continue Saturday and another bout is likely to hit the region Monday night into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Saturday’s snowfall is fueled by a very cold air mass passing through, according to the weather service. The bands of snow Saturday morning were more robust than originally expected. An additional 2 to 5 inches are expected to fall in parts of the region.

A winter weather advisory is in effect in the following counties until late Sunday afternoon: for Cayuga, Cortland, Onondaga, Ontario, Seneca, Tompkins and Wayne counties

Saturday and Sunday night, temperatures are expected to fall to single digits with wind chills mostly below 0, according to the weather service.

Temperatures should rise back to around 20 degrees on Monday. Monday night is expected to bring another 1 to 3 inches of snowfall to much of the region.

On Tuesday, temperatures will top out around 30 degrees which will prevent much melting before Christmas Day. The forecast originally called for temperatures of about 36 degrees with some rain.

“A White Christmas is almost certain at this point,” the weather service said.

Well-known furniture store opens in new location as it closes another (PS; $; Doran)

Liverpool-based Raymour & Flanigan opened a furniture outlet store in the Northern Lights Plaza in Salina on Saturday.

That store replaces the outlet location they operated in Seneca Mall in Clay. The Clay outlet center has closed.

Raymour & Flanigan purchased the plaza in April. The new furniture store location is located in the former Christmas Tree Shops space.

Northern Lights Plaza has experienced high vacancy rates in recent years, and it suffered a major blow when when Christmas Tree Shops closed its store last summer.

Built in 1956 on Route 11, Northern Lights once housed T.J. Maxx, Michaels, Media Play, and Hofmann’s Hot Haus.

Salina Town Supervisor Nick Paro has said he expects the plaza to attract more tenants in the next couple of years.

Raymour & Flanigan has more than 145 showroom, outlet, and clearance center locations in seven states.
