National-Bacon-Day.jpg

Welcome to National Bacon Day!

According to the Bacon Day website, the day was created by Danya Goodman and Meff Leonard. They came up with the day as a way to celebrate bacon and The Simpsons. In The Simpsons episode "I Love Lisa," Homer asks, "Is it Bacon Day?" This is how the creators of the day tied the celebration of two things they love together.

So what's the story of bacon? Bacon is a popular treat cut from the meat of a pig. In the United States, bacon refers to meat from the belly of the pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon. To make bacon, the pork is cured using salt, and is then dried, boiled, or smoked. The smoking of bacon is often done with hickory, mesquite, or maple wood, and flavors such as brown sugar or maple may be added. More often than not, bacon is pan fried, and it is popular as a breakfast food, in sandwiches like the BLT or club sandwich, as a complement to salads, and in wrapping other foods. "Bacon mania" has swept the United States and Canada since the late 1990's, where there has been a great increase in the amount of bacon being eaten, and in the amount of new bacon recipes. The high sodium and nitrate content of bacon that lower its health benefits has not seemed to much slow down the bacon craze.

How to Observe Bacon Day

The creators of the day suggested the following ways to celebrate:
  • Have a party and invite everyone you know, as well as people you don't know.
  • Have a "big, non denominational, gift giving December holiday"; get at least one person a gift on the day.
  • Eat a large amount of bacon; try different varieties and qualities.
  • Watch movies that star Kevin Bacon, movies with "Bacon" in the title, movies about bacon, or movies about preprocessed bacon—such as Babe.
  • Play "loud and diverse music" and drink "spirituous beverages".
  • Dress up like a pork product.
  • Kiss under mistletoe made of pork fat.
  • Taunt vegans and vegetarians.
  • Toasting to bacon and Bacon Day.
  • Email everyone you know and wish them a very happy Bacon Day.
It seems fitting that the day should also be spent watching The Simpsons. The most appropriate episode to watch is probably "I Love Lisa." Prepare some recipes that feature bacon so you have something to eat while watching.

Kyle Cuffe’s increased minutes are a result of his toughness, fight: ‘He doesn’t back down' (PS; Ditota)

Adrian Autry has this concept of his ideal Syracuse basketball player.

That player will compete every moment he’s on the basketball court. That player will exhibit a substantial amount of toughness. He will not back down. He will fight for every loose ball, every rebound. He will sacrifice every last drop of energy to help his team win.

“That’s what this is about,” the Syracuse coach said after his team defeated Bucknell Saturday in the JMA Wireless Dome. “And, I gotta find those guys. And I’m determined to find them, and I will find them.”

One of those guys over these past couple games has been Kyle Cuffe.

The junior guard played a season-high 24 minutes on Saturday. In SU’s previous game, the Maryland contest in Brooklyn, he played 17 minutes.

Cuffe is averaging 9.5 points on 7-for-18 shooting over SU’s last two games. He is 3-for-11 from the 3-point line after Saturday’s 1-for-6 performance there.

But Autry suggested that Cuffe’s numerical contributions – that the statistical contributions of everybody he summons into games – represent just part of their value to him.

In Cuffe, he’s seen a steely determination, regardless of circumstances. Autry cited Cuffe’s confidence and his toughness as reasons for Cuffe’s emergence from the deep end of the bench.

He did not play at all in three of SU’s 12 games.

“He competes. He doesn’t back down. That’s what resonates with me,” Autry said. “He didn’t get off the bench for a couple of games early on. You know, you couldn’t tell if you came to practice. He kept his head down. And, you know, that’s who I wanna go to war with. Guys that are gonna be tough.”

Overheard after Syracuse basketball’s win over Bucknell: ‘Everything is on the table to get us better’ (PS; Axe)
Give Adrian Autry time to think about ways to light a fire under his Syracuse University basketball team and he’ll be willing to mix it up.

Autry also received a little inspiration from veteran guard Kyle Cuffe during SU’s brief holiday break. Freshman forward Donnie Freeman said he received some advice he needed to hear, and Eddie Lampkin feels like it is his time to shine after collecting a double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds) in SU’s last non-conference test.

Here is the best of what I overheard in the home locker room on Saturday after SU’s 75-63 win over Bucknell.

On Kyle Cuffe’s message to the team:

“Basketball is three seasons. Non-conference, conference and postseason. I thought that was pretty impactful. That was the message. I give Kyle credit on that. We just talked about that. Is our non-conference where we want to be? No. But let’s finish it out with a win, end that season and get ready for the new season. The ACC conference. That’s what we are going to do.”

ACC Power Rankings: Who’s set up for big jumps or drops with the start of ACC play? (PS; $; Waters)

It’s here! It’s here! It’s finally here!

No, not Christmas. Not even New Year’s. No, the ACC portion of the college basketball schedule has finally arrived.

Yes, there was a weekend of league play back in early December, but the real meat of the conference schedule begins this week with four games on Tuesday, four more on New Year’s Day and a full slate of nine games on Saturday, putting all 18 ACC teams into action.

Since last week didn’t alter the ACC Power Rankings much, the start of ACC play offers a chance to look at some potential jumps and drops to watch out for this week.

If there’s a dark horse in the ACC as we begin the new year, it’s got to be SMU. The Mustangs are off to an 11-2 start. They’re already 2-0 in the ACC and they host Duke this Saturday. If SMU wins that game, it becomes a top-3 team or higher.

New indoor pickleball courts and restaurant in DeWitt sets opening date (PS; $; Doran)

A new indoor pickleball center in DeWitt with a restaurant and bar has sets its opening date.

The Erie Canal Pickleball Center is housed in what used to be the Sky Zone trampoline park in DeWitt Town Center, 3155 Erie Blvd East.

The nine pickleball courts will open Jan. 2, with the restaurant and bar opening two weeks later, said William Cleary, who owns the plaza, along with Grazi Zazzara.

The 25,000-square-foot location is decorated with graphics on the wall featuring the Erie Canal. That’s because it is right where the canal used to run, Cleary said.

The restaurant will seat about 60 people and offer pizza, salads, sandwiches and more. There also is a party room guests can reserve for events like birthdays.

Memberships for unlimited pickleball play will be $59 per month per person through January, before going to $69 a month if paid for a year or $79 for a monthly option.

Drop-ins can play for an hour for $12.50 a person.
