In Search of the Next Andrew Wiggins (nytimes.com; Wiedeman)
...
Williams had also landed Devonte Green, a sophomore guard from Long Island, who is the younger brother of the Spurs’ Danny Green; and Thomas Bryant, a highly ranked forward, who had recently left his home in Rochester to spend his junior year at Huntington Prep, a basketball factory in West Virginia with a student body of 12, the same size as its varsity team (Wiggins is an alumnus). This year, Williams signed Tyus Battle, a 6-6 guard from New Jersey who has been nationally ranked since sixth grade. Battle played the previous season for an E.Y.B.L. team in Philadelphia and was coveted by the New Jersey Playaz, a rival squad. But he agreed to join Team Scan, in part, after Williams promised Battle’s father, Gary, that his son, a natural shooting guard, would start at the point. Putting Battle at the position wasn’t necessarily best for the team, which already had several point guards, but it would make him more desirable in the eyes of college coaches and professional scouts. At every stop on the E.Y.B.L. circuit, Williams seemed to seize the chance to build new relationships. “I heard you’re changing addresses?” he said to an opposing player he heard might be switching teams. “Get out your phone, I’ll give you my number.” A B-team, meanwhile, had to be created for players like Joel Villa.

Katie Kolinski Was a Good Friend to Orangeyes, Visited and Called Him Regularly
Women Working in a Men's Game: Two with SU Basketball Ties Seek Opportunity (PS; Ditota)
When Dajuan Coleman wants to work on his shooting, or his post moves, or anything else he believes will make him a better basketball player, he knows he can count on Katie Kolinski to aid his ambition.
Kolinski, 21, will enter her fourth and final season as a manager for the Syracuse men's basketball team. She travels with the team to road games. SU coaches trust her to work out players without staff supervision. She spends otherwise free summer hours at the Melo Center, assisting players who might need a rebounder or a passer. She estimates her duties, in-season, can consume more than 30 hours per week.

Jason Benetti is Leaving Syracuse for a Job at Westwood One Radio (PS; Poliquin)
Congrats Jason! Newhouse Continues to Reign Supreme
Consider this just another in the many tributes that will be written, spoken, texted and tweeted on the matter of Jason Benetti's imminent departure from our midst.
I've been very much blessed in my career to have worked on both sides of the country and to have traveled a fair amount of the world. If, that is, North America, Europe, Asia and (coastal) South America can be considered a fair amount of the world.
And among the perks of my wonderful (and certainly undeserved) ride has been meeting some very good people in this media business that can, and has, attracted some of the other kind. And in the upper echelons has been Jason Benetti, a mix of supreme talent and sweet temperament.

Check Out NY DOT Drawings Showing Where I-81 Viaduct, Boulevard Could Go in Syracuse (PS; Weaver)
A new Interstate 81viaduct and boulevard could fit in the space between Toomey Abbott Towers and Pioneer homes, drawings from the New York State Department of Transportation show.
The renderings show how a new viaduct would fit within a span of 198 feet -- but would leave room for the public housing units on both sides of the current highway.
A new boulevard would fit within 168 feet -- enough room for sidewalks, hedges and the homes where hundreds of people now live, the drawings show.
The current span at that same location is 66 feet, according to DOT. The state's right-of-way at that part of I-81 is 200 feet, Frechette said Tuesday.
