Matthew Moyer, right, was offered a scholarship by Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim on Wednesday

Matthew Moyer, a 6-foot-8 forward from the Class of 2016, was offered a scholarship by Syracuse on Wednesday at the school's elite camp, his mother said via text message Wednesday.

Moyer and his mother, Annette, flew to Syracuse from their home in Gahanna, Ohio, and spent at the day participating in the camp at the Melo Center.

A high school standout at Lincoln High School and a member of the VCC Ohio Warrior Basketball AAU program, Moyer's first big-time offer came last summer from Wisconsin. Interest in him has exploded the past months, starting with an offer from Florida.

Annette said Moyer was spotted by assistant coach Gerry McNamara at a tournament in Philadelphia. The Syracuse staff watched him again at the AAU National Championships before inviting him to the elite camp.

Syracuse's Elite basketball camp opens today at the Melo Center; prospects in attendance (PS; Ditota)

The annual Syracuse Elite basketball camp features three players who have already given the Orange verbal commitments, plus one of the coveted undecided names in the Class of 2015.

Malachi Richardson, Frank Howard and Tyler Lydon will be participating in the camp, which includes 40-50 players. Moustapha Diagne, another 2015 verbal commitment, could not attend. Thomas Bryant, the Rochester native who attends school at Huntington Prep in West Virginia, is in Syracuse at the camp. So is another Rochester player Quinton Rose, who will be a junior at Bishop Kearney High School in the fall.

Rose, a 6-foot-5 guard in the Class of 2016, attends the same school that produced SU center Chino Obokoh; Bryant, too, attended Bishop Kearney before transferring to Huntington.

Bryant, the 6-foot-10 center, has set up an official visit to Missouri on Oct. 11, according to several published reports this week. Missouri hired former Huntington head coach Rob Fulford as an assistant coach last spring.

Syracuse's B.J. Johnson injures ankle in USA East Coast's loss to Estonia (PS; Waters)

In helping the USA East Coast All-Stars to a pair of wins in their first two games in the Four Nations Cup, Syracuse's B.J. Johnson had been the team's leading scorer.

But in the third and final game of the tournament on Wednesday, Johnson twisted his ankle early in the game and struggled for the rest of the contest, which the USA East Coast squad lost to the Estonia National Team 77-65 in Talinn, Estonia.

Johnson suffered the injury when he grabbed a rebound and came down on an opposing player's foot. Johnson, a 6-foot-7 wing, continued to play in the game despite the sore ankle. Johnson, who had averaged 18.0 points in the teams' first two games, finished with just 11 points and four rebounds.

Syracuse forward C.J. Fair takes a shot against California in last year's Maui Invitational

ACC basketball nonconference schedule assessment: No complaints with Wake Forest (PS; Stevens)

14668542-mmmain.jpg

With a team lodged near the bottom of the league standings for four years running and a new coach on board, Wake Forest has all the incentive in the world to schedule as soft as it can, come close to 20 victories and claim progress (real or perceived) in Danny Manning's debut season.

Only the Demon Deacons haven't done that.

Jim Boeheim on Dion Waiters: 'He obviously thinks there could be trades yet' (PS; DItota)

Jim Boeheim's duties with USA Basketball allowed him to reconnect with his dynamic former scoring guard last week.

Dion Waiters, who left the Orange after two seasons and was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, was invited to participate on USA Basketball's Select Team. The select team consists, essentially, of players who constitute a pool of potential national team candidates. It was Waiters' second straight summer with the Selects.

Boeheim spent time talking with Waiters last week. The Cavaliers, on the heels of their blockbuster signing of LeBron James, are the subject of constant trade rumors, most of them involving Minnesota's Kevin Love. The common name connected to that deal is Andrew Wiggins, whom the Cavs selected with the first pick of the 2014 draft.
