Syracuse's Trip to Duke Among 6 Conference Games to Circle in 2014-15 (PS; Stevens)
With the release of the ACC's regular season basketball schedule on Wednesday, here are six games of significance to keep an eye on in the 2014-15 season.
Wake Forest at N.C. State (Dec. 6): It's Danny Manning's conference debut as Wake Forest's coach, and appropriately enough for a man who spent much of his childhood in North Carolina, it comes against an in-state opponent. While Manning, who arrives after leading Tulsa to the NCAA tournament last year, provides some new hope for the Demon Deacons, Wake fans would really embrace him if he won this particular game.
Why? Predecessor Jeff Bzdelik was a miserable 2-32 in ACC road games over the last four years. Tack on the ACC tournament, and the Deacons were 3-36 against ACC teams outside of Winston-Salem. Wake has dropped 11 in a row against Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State away from home, and is 1-19 in such games since 2006-07. So, yeah, this is a chance to make a good first impression.

ACC Releases 2014-15 Men's Basketball Schedule: Syracuse-Duke Destined for St Valentine's Day Date (PS; Ditota)
A way to a Syracuse basketball fan's heart: Tickets to the Duke game in the Carrier Dome, perhaps?
The ACC released its men's basketball schedule Wednesday afternoon. The notable date on the Orange calendar occurs on Feb. 14, when Duke visits the Dome. The game, slated for 6 p.m., will be televised by ESPN.
Syracuse sold out its allotment of Duke tickets in early December last season and set a record for Carrier Dome attendance, when 35,446 packed the place for that game. The now infamous game at smaller Cameron Indoor Stadium was also a sellout, though Duke routinely exhausts its ticket supply for its basketball venue.
Syracuse's Feb. 14 date with the Blue Devils starts a perilous three-game home slate for the Orange. After Duke, SU faces Louisville (Feb. 18), then Pittsburgh (Feb. 24), the degree of difficulty softened somewhat by the home factor.

Want Tickets to the Syracuse Duke Basketball Game? Here's One Way to Secure Them (PS; Ditota)
The insane, insatiable demand for Duke basketball tickets in the Carrier Dome last season prompted Syracuse officials to capitalize on the interest.
The SU athletic department is offering today at 10 a.m. the chance for fans to secure decent seats to the Duke game, while simultaneously supporting a football program that currently lacks the panache of its basketball brethren.
SU will put on sale this morning a package that costs $250 and includes tickets to six games: Duke basketball and football, Louisville basketball and football and Florida State basketball and football.
"You can guarantee going to the Duke game on August 27," said Joe Giansante, the SU athletic department's chief spokesman.

To Whoever Broke Carrie Underwood's Heart: Thank You (NYS Fair Review; PS; Baker)
As Carrie Underwood belted out one heart-wrenching song after another at the NYS Fairgrandstand Wednesday night, I couldn't help but ask myself one pivotal question: Who would ever want to break this woman's heart?
She's beautiful. She's charming. She's humble. And she's got a voice that can overwhelm even a crowd as massive as the one at the grandstand Wednesday. So when she's belting her heart out over some no-good man who did her wrong, you've got to wonder where that schmuck is now, and how hard he's kicking himself.

Take the Train to the NYS Fair: For Some Loyal Customers, It is the Only Way to Go (PS; Kirst)
Linda Rankin and her husband, both retired, moved last year from Liverpool to West Seneca, near Buffalo. While that decision turned out well, Linda didn't want to miss Women's Day at the New York State Fair. She made plans to get up early Wednesday and take the train to the Syracuse, where she'd catch a Centro bus to the fairgrounds.
She was astounded to learn Amtrak makes five stops a day at the fair itself.
Rankin arrived at the fairgrounds around 10 a.m., on a train running about 30 minutes late. She had plenty of time to attend the Women's Day events, including what she described as a memorable talk by motivational speaker Yvonne Conte on the "seven habits of supremely happy women."

ACC Basketball: Eight Conference Schedule Takeaways (Syracuse Could Get Off to a Quick Start; PS; Stevens)
A few quick things to take note of from the ACC's league basketball schedule release on Wednesday ...
- Syracuse could find itself atop the league in the first month. The Orange opens with this sequence: at Virginia Tech, at Georgia Tech, Florida State, Wake Forest, at Clemson, Boston College, Miami. That's pretty manageable, with the trickiest games in that stretch probably the home dates with Florida State and Miami (though it's rarely easy to win at Clemson). Of course, that just means things get tougher eventually.
- The back end of the schedule is loaded for conference heavyweights. Syracuse plays its home-and-homes against Duke and Pittsburgh in the month of February, and gets Louisville (Feb. 18) and Virginia (March 2) late in the season. The two Virginia-Louisville games are Feb. 7 and March 7. The two Duke-North Carolina tussles are Feb. 18 and March 7. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh plays Louisville, North Carolina and Virginia between Feb. 7 and Feb. 16.
- N.C. State, Wake Forest, Florida State and Notre Dame get a head start on the conference schedule. Once again, there are a pair of December conference games to help even out all the byes during league play. N.C. State-Wake Forest is the conference opener on Dec. 6, and Florida State-Notre Dame play in South Bend on Dec. 13. None of those teams will be favored to win the league, but two of them will enjoy a few weeks at the top of the conference standings.
