But now that North Carolina has formally released its 2014-15 basketball schedule, we can really start looking ahead to what the Tar Heels will face this season. We can also start picking apart the hills and valleys of the slate, which is a tough one but also one that can provide UNC with great preparation for the postseason. The 2014-15 schedule features 13 nonconference games before Carolina gets into the 18-game ACC lineup. All told, UNC plays 15 home games in the Dean Smith Center, with 12 games on the road and four set for neutral sites. That includes three games in the Bahamas over Thanksgiving as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. ... Former Exeter Basketball Captain to Play in ACC at Miami (seacoastonline.com; O'Leary) Basketball has led Chris Stowell to some memorable places, from his Exeter High School days to his post-grad year at Tilton School, one of the best prep programs in the country and the alma mater of big-name stars like Georges Niang (Iowa State) and Nerlens Noel (Philadelphia 76ers). This is something different, a turn Stowell attributes to persistence, hard work and a well-timed stroke of luck. The former Exeter captain is now a freshman small forward for the University of Miami men’s basketball team, making the 14-man roster as a walk-on. "It hasn't really fully sunk in yet,” Stowell said in a recent phone interview from Florida. “The season hasn't officially started, so I still kind of feel like I'm in a dream right now, being able to be a part of such a big program, such an esteemed program, especially in a conference like the ACC. It's just amazing to be at such a high level." The experience just keeps getting more surreal. Stowell and his Miami teammates recently returned home from a 10-day trip to Spain for training and team bonding. The Hurricanes played three exhibition games and won them all; Stowell appeared in one of the games and missed his only field goal attempt, a 3-pointer. ... College Basketball News AAC Preview: SMU and UConn Should Battle for Conference Championship (realgm.com; Hanner) My numeric projections will be available near the start of the season, but today I want to write a few words about each American Conference team’s outlook. Earlier Previews: ACC Preview, MWC Preview, SEC Preview, WCC Preview, A10 Preview, Big East Preview American Conference Co-Favorites SMU: Even though Emmanuel Mudiay decided to skip college, SMU still deserves to be in the preseason Top 25. SMU had the 30th best margin-of-victory in the nation last year, they don’t have any freshman on the roster (who might waste possessions), and they return 74% of their minutes. With stars Nic Moore and Markus Kennedy returning, this team has Top 25 level talent. But the reasons for optimism go beyond those basic stats. The reality is that several bench players are prepared to break out and take on larger roles. Keith Frazier was a Top 30 guard prospect last year, and as a rising sophomore, there is a strong chance he becomes a star this year. Former Top 10 JUCO recruit Yanick Moreira was injured last year, but when fully healthy he was dominant. All Moreira needs to be a major scorer at the D1 level is more minutes. And even if Ben Moore and Cannen Cunningham were not ranked quite as high out of high school, they were efficient last season and they could thrive with a larger role too. The team also adds one of the best transfers in the nation in Xavier’s Justin Martin. Without Mudiay, this might not be a Top 10 team, but this team still has the depth and strength to win the league. I wanted to get out there and see the world, and as a kid, I knew that Peter Jennings had a thirst and hunger to travel the world, too. . . . He was the James Bond of news [and] even at that young age, I knew he had this way of distilling these complicated foreign stories. ...
