Cameras flashed as six former Syracuse University basketball players sat at a table answering questions. But this was no post-game press conference, and basketball was rarely brought up during the two-hour conversation
Etan Thomas, Billy Owens, Derrick Coleman, John Wallace, Roosevelt Bouie and Lawrence Moten had not returned to discuss their careers on the hardwood, but rather to have a dialogue about their roles as fathers.
The audience shares a laugh at comments made about fatherhood by the panelists.
Their fatherhood panel, held at the Schine Underground on Saturday, was part of Coming Back Together (CBT) weekend, which celebrates the accomplishments of African-American and Latino alumni of SU.
Thomas, who wrote a book called, “Fatherhood: Rising to the Ultimate Challenge,” moderated the event with fellow Syracuse alumnus Rachel Vessel, the author of “Daughters of Men: Portraits of African-American Women and Their Father.”
Thomas said the panel was organized as a way to encouraging children growing up in single-parent households.
“Young people are getting bombarded with negativity,” Thomas said. “We want to use our celebrity to inspire, because youth listen to people they know”
“Lots of people are told they’re going to fail in life because they’re from a so-called broken home.”
Every member of the panel discussed the role of the father in a child’s life and some shared their own experiences.

Former SU basketball player and 2000 SU alumnus Etan Thomas headlined the “All-Star Fatherhood Panel” on Friday in the Schine Underground. The panel, moderated by SU alumna Rachel Vassel, featured Thomas, Derrick Coleman, Billy Owens, John Wallace, Lawrence Moten and Roosevelt Bouie. The panel discussed fatherhood, and Bouie, the only player without children, spoke about how his parents raised him as a child.
For Thomas, the inspiration for attending the panel and writing his book, “Fatherhood: Rising to the Ultimate Challenge,” was “to do something that was inspirational, especially to young
people.” Thomas said when kids don’t receive help at home or at school, they turn toward gangs.
“You see these kids dying over colors, dying for their brothers, but that’s our fault, we let that happen,” he said.

New I-81 Poll Says Rebuilding Elevated Highway is Favorite Option (PS; Weaver)
Slightly more Central New Yorkers want to replace the aging Interstate 81 viaduct in Syracuse with another elevated highway rather than a street-level boulevard, according to the first independent poll about the highway's future.
Very few area residents want a tunnel dug to replace I-81 in Syracuse, according to the poll by Syracuse.com/The Post-Standard/Siena College.
Of 598 people polled last week, 39 percent want another set of elevated bridges to carry I-81 traffic through the city. Another 34 percent want to tear down the viaduct and reroute highway traffic onto Interstates 481 or 690. Only 13 percent say a tunnel is the solution.
The poll shows how divided the community is over the massive project that is expected to cost more than $1 billion and dramatically change how downtown looks.
Overall, 42 percent polled say keeping highway traffic running on I-81's current path should be the most important goal of the project. Another 26 percent say keeping costs down should be the top priority. Only 18 percent say tearing down the viaduct should be the No. 1 goal.
