4 Things You Need to Know About the Adrian Bulldogs (PS; Waters)
...
While Syracuse is a perennial power in the NCAA's Division I, Adrian College competes in Division III. The Bulldogs' coach is Mark White, a 1988 graduate of the school. White has guided Adrian to 68 wins and 62 losses in his five seasons. He's recorded a winning record in four of his five years since returning to his alma mater.
Here are some facts about Adrian College that Syracuse fans should know whether they plan on heading to the Dome tonight or stay at home and watch on TV.
The Syracuse-Adrian connections
Syracuse has never played Adrian, but there are several ties between the two schools.
White, a native of Detroit, played against Syracuse great Derrick Coleman in high school. White went to Detroit's Renaissance High School, while Coleman attended Northern High.
Coleman has actually shown up for Renaissance's summer league games at Detroit's famous St. Cecilia.
After White graduated from Adrian, he returned to Detroit and coached at the high school level for several years. He was an assistant at Pershing when SU coach Jim Boeheim recruited Todd Burgan and Winfred Walton. White also coached former SU guard James Theus' AAU team, The Family. White also coached against former SU assistant Rob Murphy, when the two were at opposing high schools in Detroit.
"Coach Boeheim has a lot of ties to our area,'' White said.

The Syracuse Zone Defense Demystified (bustingbrackets.com; Sherman)
There are an increasing number of college coaches using zone defenses. Some use zones as a changeup or to protect a player from foul trouble and others have made the change and now play zone exclusively.
Zone defense is not new to Syracuse and Jim Boeheim. The Orangemen play 2-3 zone exclusively and it has helped them reach Final Fours and win the National Championship in 2003.
Boeheim recruits players that would excel in any defense. So why have the Orangemen sold out to zone? We will look at reasons why Boeheim teaches zone over man-to-man and we will dive into the X’s and O’s of the Syracuse defense.

Will Another Year of Turnover Affect Syracuse Basketball? (sujuiceonline.com; Marcus)
Before any sports season, especially in the college ranks, people are always scouring the rosters to see who has gone and who remains. And in college basketball, there’s always going to be players who graduated and players who left early for the NBA. On the other end of the spectrum, you have teams with key guys returning and hyped freshmen coming in. Usually, a team will have a mix of both.
In the past few years, Syracuse has lost a decent amount of players early to the NBA. There have been seasons where I have been concerned at the start (2012-2013 comes to mind–the Orange lost Dion Waiters, Fab Melo, Kris Joseph and Scoop Jardine, but MCW was gold). That squad went to the Final Four. Because the Orange is consistently good, the team is used to losing big minutes and not missing a beat.
This year won’t be different in terms of players lost. SU lost Tyler Ennis, Jerami Grant, C.J. Fair and Baye Moussa Keita. But this year I question whether SU can continue the winning as it has in past years. A lot of talent has left the past few years.

Jeter Fans Offer Cash, SU Basketball Tickets to Hear Retired Yankee Star Speak at Hamilton College (PS; Doran)
When Michael Adamo, a lifelong Derek Jeter fan, found out tickets he'd purchased for the Sept. 20 Yankees game in New York City were fake, he was extremely upset.
He consoled himself knowing that he might have another opportunity to see Jeter when the just-retired Yankee superstar speaks at Hamilton College on Dec. 10.
"I scheduled a vacation day from work so I could go wait in line for tickets," said Adamo, who works at Mohawk Valley Community College.
Today was the day the college initially announced it would offer several hundred tickets to the public. But last week, the college announced all 5,286 tickets were gone, there would be no tickets for the public.
