Notre Dame Survives Late Push to Defeat UNC in Chapel Hill (espn.com; AP)

Mike Brey wants his Notre Dame players to establish a pattern of consistent success in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Winning at North Carolina in Year 2 is a big step toward that goal.
Zach Auguste's basket off an offensive rebound with 1:07 left helped the No. 13 Fighting Irish hold off the No. 18 Tar Heels 71-70 on Monday night.
Auguste's basket got the lead back for the Fighting Irish (15-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who blew an 11-point lead before surviving two late shots by preseason All-American
Marcus Paige to clinch this one.
Now Notre Dame is 3-0 in league play for the first time -- Big East or ACC -- and off to its best start in 15 seasons under Brey.
"I always said my goal was could we create an identity in this league like we had in the Big East," Brey said. "I was very proud of our consistency. We've not yet done that in this league. We're still earning our stripes every day."
Auguste scored 18 points while
Pat Connaughton had 16 for the Irish, who shot 46 percent and overcame their own cold shooting down the stretch.

ACC Basketball is Finally Real for Louisville (cardchronicle.com; Gehring)

When Louisville got the call to the ACC, it was a move - like all other conference realignment - motivated by football. But after years of playing in the Big East and seeing it crumble, the ACC still felt more like a challenge on the basketball court. Yes, it unquestionably raised the profile of the football team and the athletic program as a whole, but in Louisville, it's about the basketball. It always has been, it always will be.
So while this year's football schedule was one of the most exciting ones in recent memory, it still doesn't quite compare to the wild ride that will likely be the next few months of Louisville basketball. In those next three months, the Cards will meet at least six teams that are currently ranked before they reach the ACC Tournament, a place where they will all but certainly meet more.
Sunday night, Louisville finally got its first look at exactly what an ACC game looks like on the hardwood. If looking at the conference schedule seemed like a challenge before the season, it certainly doesn't feel any less so now that the first road trip is out of the way. Wake Forest isn't anywhere near the hardest test that the ACC has to offer, but they proved the general level of the conference, especially on the road.
Sure, it's probably fair to say that if Louisville visited Winston-Salem in a month and a half, things would probably lean heavier in the Cards' favor, but Sunday's matchup was valuable anyway. Rick Pitino is still experimenting with a little bit of everything (11 players saw the floor against Wake), and he usually has a way of figuring out the best way to utilize his roster. He'll have a different challenge in that regard this season with a larger group of newcomers that he will need to produce down the road, but the talent is there. And we trust the Hall of Famer's abilities to take it from there, yeah?

ACC Notebook: Elite Finding Little Comes Easy (fredicksburg.com; Coghill)

When Louisville joined the Atlantic Coast Conference this year, it was widely perceived the league would be top-heavy with a quartet of teams poised to contend on the national stage.

The Cardinals, along with Duke, North Carolina and Virginia were all ranked in the preseason top 10.
But this past weekend, the first full slate of league play, demonstrated there is perhaps more balance than originally thought.
Third-ranked Virginia needed double overtime to defeat Miami 89–80. It took No. 13 Notre Dame two extra periods to shake off Georgia Tech, while Wake Forest gave Louisville a tougher-than-expected challenge in an 85–76 defeat.
First-year Wake coach Danny Manning said the setback to the Cardinals whetted his appetite for more intense competition. Wake Forest will host No. 2 Duke Wednesday at 9 p.m.
