Syracuse and A Case of Mistaken Identity (TNIAAM; Keeley)

In the grand scheme of things, presenting Roosevelt Bouie with a misspelled jersey and plaque during his jersey retirement ceremony at the Carrier Dome isn't a big deal. It's a mistake and a silly one at that. Syracuse Athletics' communications chief Joe Giansante said that SU "deeply regret that it happened" and I'm sure of that.

But as part of his discussion with Chris Carlson, he also added this:

"It was not something that — how can I say it — it wasn't something that you'd think would need to be looked at beforehand."

Now that's an interesting line of thought. I remember when I worked in an office and would outsource work to vendors or agencies to do on our behalf. I would entrust those vendors to do the job correctly with the distinct understanding that if they got anything wrong it was my butt on the line in the eyes of my boss or my client.

So when they returned their final work to me, you better be damn sure I checked to make sure they didn't make any errors.

Hell, when we created the Orange Eagle Trophy, a silly fan trophy, we all made sure to double-check the spelling as to avoid any dumb errors.

Jerry Carino's AP Top 25 Ballot (app.com; Carino)

Jerry Carino, longtime men’s college basketball beat writer for Gannett New Jersey, holds a vote in the Associated Press Top 25. Here is his ballot for this week, followed by a brief analysis:

1. Kentucky (27-0)

2. Virginia (25-1)

3. Gonzaga (28-1)

4. Duke (24-3)

5. Wisconsin (25-2)

6. Villanova (25-2)

7. Arizona (24-3)

8. Kansas (22-5)

9. Notre Dame (24-4)

10. Northern Iowa (26-2)

Analysis: Not much movement. The big loser is Louisville, which falls six spots after a 10-point loss to Syracuse . . . no huge risers, though Maryland and West Virginia each climbed three spots . . . you could make a very strong case for San Diego State to be ranked. It’s just hard to break in with the schedule they’re playing.

76ers MCW Trade Leads PSU Fan to Wish They Would Move Back to Syracuse (pennlive.com)

NBA

I'M NOT MUCH of a NBA fan but as a Philadelphia native, what are the 76s doing? How can you trade away a guy who was a rookie of the year last year for another draft pick? Draft picks are unknown quantities. A guy who has won an award and plays pretty well every night from what it appears, it just makes no sense at all. I think they are completely without direction. I wish they would move back to Syracuse, frankly they are an embarrassment to the city.

Brey: Notre Dame will ball-screen for Jerian Grant against the zone to get him into lane; Irish also needs to make shots over it.

Brey: Colson has offered Notre Dame a legitimate scoring option.

Brey on Jerian Grant as ACC POY: It's one of the great stories in college basketball; he is so involved with everything we do on offense.

chris carlson ‏@ccarlsononSU
Brey on lack of mid-range jumpers for Notre Dame: It's how we evolved and who we are. We're not coaching all or nothing.

Brey on Notre Dame: It has to do with Jerian Grant's return. A lot of our stuff in half-court is screen stuff where (players) roll for dunks

Brey: "I think #Syracuse would have made the tournament. I think they took a lot off the board by saying it wouldn't be a postseason team."

Brey on playing zone: We try not to over-analyze it. We try to cut and move just like we do in man-to-man.

Brey: We need to get Grant the ball in the middle, and Connaughton. And you've got to make shots over it.

Brey on Jerian Grant: He's the best story in college basketball. Guy returning from suspension to lead team to uncharted territory.

chris carlson ‏@ccarlsononSU
Dixon on Christmas: He had 29 the game before so we felt good to keep him in the 20s. He scores in a variety of ways.

Dixon on Christmas: Facing the basket he's improved, he makes free throws, does a great job posing up and sealing. We double-teamed him.

Boeheim on Cooney: It's sore. He practices yesterday but it's sore. He's struggling a little bit too move. It's day-to-day.

Boeheim on Cooney: He's the second-best 3-point shooter on our team so we don't really have a replacement for him.

Boeheim on Cooney: I don't see any reason he won't be able to practice.

Boeheim on ND: They're a tremendous team. They shoot the ball as well as any team in the country, they handle the ball.

Boeheim on freshman ineligibility: That will never happen. I don't know why people are talking about it.

Boeheim on freshman ineligibility: (Carmelo) wouldn't have come to college. Any good kid wouldn't have come to college.

Donna Ditota ‏@DonnaDitota1
Jim Boeheim on Trevor Cooney's back: Likely to play at Notre Dame. He's sore, but he practiced yesterday.

Jim Boeheim on consideration for Rakeem as POY: I hope he does. He's played great. His numbers, his leadership has been tremendous for us.

Jim Boeheim called Jerian Grant "one of the best all-around players I've seen since I've been coaching." He hurts you so many ways.

Since SU is playing next Monday night, this was JB's last ACC Teleconference for the year.
