Chancellor Kent Syverud's statement today did not mention Hopkins, who played under Boeheim for four years, ending his athletic career after the 1992-93 season. Boeheim hired Hopkins as an assistant basketball coach in 1995.

"Today was about Jim," Gross said. "I wouldn't read that much into it. Jim announced what he's going to do and that's what it's all about.''

Gross was asked whether there was a contract in place that stipulates Hopkins' succession to Boeheim as SU's next head coach.

"I don't get into contract stuff," Gross said. "I don't want to breach that.''[/I]
