No conference has more teams in this year’s Sweet 16, as five squads from the ACC—Duke, Louisville, NC State, North Carolina and Notre Dame—have earned a spot in this year’s regional semifinals. One person who has a unique perspective on what this means is former Syracuse big man Rakeem Christmas. The Philadelphia native and All-ACC first-team selection tore up the five aforementioned squads, as he averaged 17 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3 blocks in six games against those teams. Christmas took a few minutes to talk with us about the Tournament, who he has winning it all (hint: it’s not an ACC team), Jim Boeheim’s legacy at Syracuse and his upcoming pro career. SLAM: Which team is going to win the NCAA Tournament? Rakeem Christmas: I think Kentucky is. SLAM: You’ve played against five of these teams, correct? I have it down as Duke, North Carolina, NC State, Notre Dame and Louisville. RC: Yeah. SLAM: If you had to power rank those five teams what would that look like? RC: Duke, Notre Dame, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State. ... Former SU Basketball Star Lazarus Sims to Run Syracuse City Parks (PS; Knauss) Former Syracuse University basketball star Lazarus Sims is the city's new parks commissioner, Mayor Stephanie Miner will announce today. Sims, 42, a Syracuse native, will take over the $72,000-a-year job from Baye Muhammad, who is leaving for a job with the city of Rochester. Sims, who grew up playing basketball in Kirk Park on the South Side, said he is eager to "preach the message of the park'' and get more kids to use the city's parks and playgrounds. "That's what I want to get these young kids to see, to get out of the house and stop playing the video games,'' Sims said. Muhammad, who had been parks commissioner since 2011, was appointed Friday to a$126,725-a-year job as commissioner of neighborhood and business development in Rochester. Miner and her police chief, Frank Fowler, recruited Sims to take Muhammad's place, Sims said Wednesday. Fowler has been a friend and a mentor to Sims for many years, Sims said. ... Syracuse Should Focus on Academic Strengths Rather Than Athletics (DO; Reader) Chancellor Kent Syverud responded to NCAA basketball sanctions by recognizing that “Syracuse University is a great institution with a proud history.” He stressed the importance of “academic integrity,” yet praised rather than disciplined Coach Jim Boeheim, and kept the athletic director on staff. First and foremost, S.U. admittedly is guilty of certain infractions. Dignity demands immediate resignations. The NCAA is a player in the blame game influenced by big money in professionalizing college sports. The Los Angeles Times reported that the Ed O’Bannon antitrust claim and books have been written about NCAA practices forcing major college sports programs being “fraudulent at its core.” A New York state investigation in 1951 found that football and basketball were “no longer amateur sports.” I attended Syracuse for other reasons, partly because of its semester in Guatemala — now expired in these times of immigration reform, drug trafficking and violence there. I played sports without scholarship. Syracuse has been a beacon of light for a struggling upstate New York region. Academics and athletics have brought an importance long before the legacy of the Jim Brown, or Dave Bing/Boeheim eras. Then SU entered a new arena metaphorically, producing some of the greatest athletes who excelled off the field, exemplifying Syracuse during the Civil Rights Movement of the ‘60s. Classmate Bing dedicated himself to manufacturing and as mayor in the toughest job in America. Jim Brown served as a role model for black business entrepreneurship. The late Ernie Davis carried a B average in economics and is a now honored in a physical arena, the Carrier Dome. The late John Mackey and attorney Billy Hunter were dormmates who served as the NFL players’ representative and head of the NBA players union respectively. ...
