Author Mary Karr Tells SU Grads to be Curious, Compassionate (PS; Breidenbach)
Poet and author Mary Karr encouraged Syracuse University graduates Sunday to leave the place more curious and open-hearted than when they showed up.
"Being smart and rich are lucky. But being curious and compassionate will save your ass," she said.
In her commencement address Sunday, Karr reached into her own history: the story of her "outlaw mother," her drug-using younger self and her own issues with fear and anxiety.
She told students to see their fears a different way.
"If you can get curious about what scares or infuriates you, especially if it's part of yourself, you can get way less scared," she said.
This watcher, noticer self, she said, is "who I think you really are. That's where your soul is."
Karr is professor of English in SU's College of Arts and Sciences, and divides her time between Syracuse and New York City.
