Memorial Day: Remembering the Former SU Basketball Players Who Died While in the Military (PS; Waters)
Sports has often seen the misuse of the word "hero.''
World Series hero. Super Bowl hero. Olympic hero.
But sometimes sports and hero can go together.
As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, here is a remembrance of the former Syracuse University basketball players who lost their lives while serving in the United States military.
Gene Berger
Gene Berger was a native of Syracuse and a graduate of Nottingham High School. He played basketball at Syracuse in the 1939-40, 1940-41 and 1941-42 seasons. He started 43 games in his three seasons on the SU varsity. He also lettered in both football and track while at Syracuse.
After graduation, Berger became a pilot in the Navy. He remained in the service after World War II ended.
According to a story that appeared in the Post-Standard on Sept. 16, 1961, Berger was serving on the USS Lexington, which was stationed in San Diego. He was leading three planes in maneuvers when his plane crashed into the ocean shortly after takeoff.
Berger was 41 years old.
Joe Minsavage
Joe Minsavage was a native of Nanticoke, Pa. He came to Syracuse University where he played both football and basketball. On the football field, Minsavage was a standout end. He was a three-year starter on the football team. He also spent two years on the SU basketball team, appearing in 12 games.
Minsavage joined the Navy at the start of World War II. On June 19, 1943, he was on board the Henry Knox in the Indian Ocean when it was torpedoed by a Japanese ship. Fifty-one U.S. sailors, including Minsavage, died.

Update on Syracuse in The Basketball Tournament: Two Injuries, a Practice Date and a Voting Deadline (PS; Ditota)
The Syracuse entry in The Basketball Tournament is searching for two replacement guards. And they have all but exhausted the available pool of Orange alumni.
Brandon Reese, the former SU guard, was injured in his professional basketball league in Kuwait and will be unable to participate in the $1 million sweepstakes in the winner-take-all single elimination tournament this summer. Reese sustained a kidney injury playing overseas.
And Demetris Nichols has decided to spend time with his family this summer and mend the bumps and bruises that accumulated over a long professional season in Russia.
"We've got to find someone to add to the roster to help Eric in the backcourt," said Kevin Belbey, the Syracuse team's general manager.
The Syracuse team consists of Devendorf, Josh Pace, Rick Jackson, Baye Moussa Keita, Donte Greene, Terrence Roberts and Hakim Warrick. Mookie Jones had originally signed on to sub for Nichols if the team advanced to the second weekend of the tournament. Nichols had a wedding conflict that weekend. Jones could be added as a full-time team member.
