World Series hero. Super Bowl hero. Olympic hero. But sometimes sports and hero can go together. As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, here is a remembrance of the former Syracuse University basketball players who lost their lives while serving in the United States military. [/I] [B][I]Gene Berger[/I][/B] [I] Gene Berger was a native of Syracuse and a graduate of Nottingham High School. He played basketball at Syracuse in the 1939-40, 1940-41 and 1941-42 seasons. He started 43 games in his three seasons on the SU varsity. He also lettered in both football and track while at Syracuse. After graduation, Berger became a pilot in the Navy. He remained in the service after World War II ended. According to a story that appeared in the Post-Standard on Sept. 16, 1961, Berger was serving on the USS Lexington, which was stationed in San Diego. He was leading three planes in maneuvers when his plane crashed into the ocean shortly after takeoff. Berger was 41 years old. [/I] [B][I]Joe Minsavage[/I][/B] [I] Joe Minsavage was a native of Nanticoke, Pa. He came to Syracuse University where he played both football and basketball. On the football field, Minsavage was a standout end. He was a three-year starter on the football team. He also spent two years on the SU basketball team, appearing in 12 games. Minsavage joined the Navy at the start of World War II. On June 19, 1943, he was on board the Henry Knox in the Indian Ocean when it was torpedoed by a Japanese ship. Fifty-one U.S. sailors, including Minsavage, died. ...
