Andy Rautins After Andrew Nicholson Infamously Punched Him in the Groin
Bona to Play Syracuse in Non-Conference Game (oleantimesherald.com; Butler)
The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team is reportedly rekindling its rivalry with a former long-time foe.
Coach Mark Schmidt’s Bonnies will play a non-conference game against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome on Nov. 17, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. It will be the first matchup between the two teams, who played each other regularly in the 1970s and into the 1980s, since the 2009-10 campaign.
Many fans expressed their excitement on social media about the matchup, which Rothstein tweeted out Wednesday. Most have been clamoring to see the Orange back on Bona’s schedule and for their team to get another shot at polarizing coach Jim Boeheim. There’s been no word on if Bona will get a return game in a location such as Rochester or Buffalo the following season.
In their last meeting, on Dec. 19, 2009, the Bonnies lost to No. 5 Syracuse, 85-72, in the Dome. Schmidt’s team trailed by just four at halftime, but saw the Orange pull away over the final 15 minutes. Star forward Andrew Nicholson, then a sophomore, was ejected in the second half for committing a flagrant foul on Andy Rautins.
The Bonnies themselves are already eager to play the traditional Big East, and now ACC, power.
“Cuse this upcoming season at the dome that game is gonna be so live!!!” rising senior Dion Wright tweeted Wednesday.
According to syracuse.com, the Orange lead the all-time series 23-3.

Rakeem Christmas Keeps NBA Dream and Mother's Memory Alive (philly.com; Pompey)
Landra "Jenny" Hamid would have loved this process, her son believes. And Rakeem Christmas also has no doubt that his mother, who died of kidney failure, a complication of lupus, will be looking down in amazement during the NBA draft on June 25.
"She's proud of me," said Christmas, 23, whose mother died when he was 5. "That's all I'm trying to do is make her and my family proud."
So far, so good. The former Academy of the New Church standout is believed to be the first Syracuse basketball player to graduate in three years.
With another season of eligibility left, Christmas went on to excel for the Orange last season. Now the power forward/center is projected to be a late first-round or early second-round draft pick.
