2016 SU Verbal Matthew Moyer Ready for Upcoming Year at South Kent Prep (PS; Waters)
In going to South Kent (Conn.) Prep school next year, Syracuse basketball recruit Matthew Moyer hopes to follow in the footsteps of a former University of Louisville player.
Moyer, a 6-foot-8 forward from Columbus, Ohio, decided to spend his senior year at South Kent to help him prepare for Syracuse and beyond. And his primary example was Russ Smith.
Smith, a native of New York City, went to South Kent before getting a lot of offers from big-time college basketball programs. He got an offer from Louisville. He played a key role on Louisville's 2013 national championship team and was a consensus All-American in 2014.
"Coach (Kelvin) Jefferson knows what it takes to get players that didn't have the top offers like Russ Smith,'' Moyer said Saturday prior to playing in the 5th annual Mary Kline Classic at West Orange (N.J.) High School. "He goes to South Kent with not a lot of high major offers and he ends up going to Louisville and a few years later he goes off to the NBA. I feel like South Kent, they breed NBA players.''
On Saturday, Moyer scored 12 points as his Team Bravery squad beat Team Inspiration, 139-132, in the Mary Kline Classic. Moyer is the only player in the 2016 class that has committed to Syracuse at this point.

--Huntington Prep (W.Va.) 2016 G Curtis Jones took home MVP honors for Team Inspiration in the underclassman game, dropping 30 points in a losing effort, hitting four 3-pointers as part of his game-high effort. The 6-3 guard, who plays with Boo Williams (Va.) on the EYBL circuit, listed offers from Georgetown, Maryland, Indiana, Missouri, NC State, West Virginia, among others, and said he’s also been talking to Florida and Miami. The native of Richmond, Va., said the idea of staying in the D.C./Virginia area certainly appeals to him, but he’s open to going elsewhere; expect him to cut his list down in August before taking official visits, but he doesn’t have any specific plans beyond that.
--22 Feet Academy (S.C.) 2016 Sedee Keita scored just four points, but made a strong effort on the glass and the defensive end for Team Inspiration, which lost to Team Bravery, in the underclassmen game. The 6-foot-9, 225-pound center from Middleton, D.E. lists LSU, Kansas, Xavier and Mississippi State as the schools he’s hearing from the most right now. Kansas and LSU are interest-only at the moment, but Xavier and Mississippi State have offered, in addition to schools like Syracuse, Villanova, Iowa State and Memphis. Keita, who plays with Delaware-based WeR1 on the AAU circuit, notes that playing with the high-major backcourt of Quade Green (Neumann-Goretti, Pa.) and Trevon Duval (St. Benedicts, N.J.) has helped his game and recruitment flourish from the easy opportunities they create for him on offense. WeR1 (9-3) is currently ranked first overall in the Under Armour Association’s “Hungry” division.

Predicting the Biggest Risers and Fallers of the 2015 NBA Draft (BR; Toporek)
Prior to the combine, Syracuse center Rakeem Christmas barely qualified for Wasserman's big board, slotting in at No. 50 overall with a projected range of "second round/undrafted." It's likely safe to say Christmas no longer needs to worry about the latter half of that projection.
Christmas was one of the combine's breakout stars, measuring 6'9¾" with a 7'5¼" wingspan and a 9'2½" standing reach. He also dominated the five-on-five scrimmages, finishing with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, six rebounds and a block Thursday and 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting, six boards and two blocks Friday.
Wasserman wrote that Christmas "looked like a grown man Day 1," and he wasn't the only one impressed by the big man's performance. Following Thursday's scrimmage, one NBA general manager toldESPN.com's Chad Ford:
He had an advantage [over his combine competition] as a four-year senior. But that wasn't what set him apart. I felt he showed that he could disrupt shots, attack the rim and play bigger than I felt he did at Syracuse. There aren't many centers in this draft after the lottery, and I think he'll draw a lot of interest for teams in the late first and early second.
Christmas even showed flashes of some impressive shooting range at the combine, knocking down three of five NBA three-point tries from each of the corners during drills. Four-year seniors aren't typically sexy prospects at this time of year, but Christmas' dominance at the combine sent his draft stock soaring.
"Christmas was projected as a late second-rounder before the combine," Ford wrote. "I think he's going to be one of the first picks off the board in the second round now after talking with scouts."
