Late Roster Move for Syracuse Team in 'The Basketball Tournament', DNic In, McCroskey Out (PS; Ditota)
Demetris Nichols is in. Louie McCroskey is out.
That's the latest roster move for Boeheim's Army, the Syracuse-centric team playing for $1 million in The Basketball Tournament that starts next month.
Nichols had originally been approached about playing for Boeheim's Army, but deferred citing exhaustion after a long professional season and the desire to spend time this summer with his family. But by Monday, the former Syracuse University forward had reconsidered; a day later he was added to Boeheim's Army. Nichols now appears on the team's TBT roster.
McCroskey had been on another TBT team that failed to qualify for the single-elimination tournament. He was scooped up Monday by Boeheim's Army in anticipation of a potential schedule conflict for one of the team's guards. But TBT rules, said Boeheim's Army general manager Kevin Belbey, permit just two roster additions after June 1. The team added Lawrence Moten Monday as a player-coach. Nichols completes the team's roster. So McCroskey became the odd man out.
"He was the last guy we talked to," Belbey said. "There was a lot of confusion for a couple hours yesterday."

Boeheim's Army Player-Coach Lawrence Moten: 'I Can't Give Away All My Secrets' (PS; Ditota)
In Boeheim's Army, player-coach Lawrence Moten inherits a squad steeped in the 2-3 zone.
Syracuse has branded its defensive reputation on the defense. The Orange has confounded opponents with its long, elastic reach. It has invited teams to attempt 3-point shots, a strategy that sometimes backfires.
Moten, enticed to coach the Orange-based entry as it attempts to win $1 million in The Basketball Tournament, understands the appeal of the 2-3. But Moten declined to reveal whether his team will employ the defense.
"We'll figure it out," he said. "I can't give away all my secrets as a player-coach."
Moten chuckled. He teaches physical education in four elementary schools across Maryland and trains young basketball players from Northern Virginia and Maryland on his own time. At 43, he is the oldest member of Boeheim's Army. He is also Syracuse's all-time leading scorer, a guy who mystified defenses with a unique blend of skills and smarts.
"I'm not worried about being in shape," he said. "I'm in pretty good shape. I'll do whatever I gotta do to bring home this million dollars."

Carli Lloyd Overcame a Rutgers Education to Become a Star Player on the US Women's Team
2015 Women's World Cup: US Advances To Final With 2-0 Win Over Germany (PS; AP)
Carli Lloyd buried a penalty kick, Hope Solo got another shutout and the United States beat top-ranked Germany 2-0 on Tuesday night to advance to the title match at the Women's World Cup.
Lloyd's penalty kick in the 69th minute went into the right side of the goal less than 10 minutes after Celia Sasic shot wide on a penalty kick for Germany.
"Just slotted it home. I knew what I had to do," Lloyd said.
Solo has posted five straight shutouts for the United States in the tournament. Kelley O'Hara came in off the bench and scored in the 85th minute, delighting the pro-American crowd.
The second-ranked United States will play the winner of Wednesday night's match in Edmonton between defending champion Japan, ranked No. 4, and sixth-ranked England. The final is set for Sunday at Vancouver's BC Place.
"It's a dream come true," Lloyd said. "This is what we trained for."
