Welcome to National Creamsicle Day!

National Creamsicle (Epsicle) Day History
National Creamsicle Day is not noted in any official legislation or designation as a holiday but is observed in the United States as an unofficial day of celebration. The frozen dessert has been in existence for many years. It was originally invented by Frank Epperson who discovered the possibility of a frozen treat on a stick in 1905 at age 11. Epperson left his drink in the freezer with a stirrer in it creating what he called the Epsicle. The Epsicle eventually was renamed as the Popsicle and Epperson eventually created the creamsicle and dreamsicle. 2

Michael Gbinije Will be Star for Syracuse Basketball This Season (thejuice; Goodman)

Good news Syracuse fans: Michel Gbinije is ready. The timid yet talented senior is ready to lead the Syracuse Orange this upcoming season, a far leap from where he was two season ago.

Gbinije has been a polarizing player since his arrival as a transfer from Duke. As the only other ball-handler on the roster, he was less than impressive backing up Tyler Ennis during the 2013-2014 campaign. He shot the ball poorly (38%) and didn’t do much in his 15 minutes per game, largely due to passiveness.
Still, even as he struggled, many people believed he could be special.

Let’s not forget, he came out of High School as a Top-30 recruit and landed at Duke. Not to toot Duke’s horn too much, but if you are recruited to Durham, you have some talent. Maybe it was Coach K’s style that stifled Gbinije, and maybe he needed a season under Boeheim to get comfortable, but he finally began to put it all together last year as he learned to be more aggressive and confident.

Still, thrust into the starting line-up (and asked to do a lot as Kaleb Joseph struggled), Gbinije started off slow. He put up three stinkers in a row against Iowa, Loyal and Holy Cross, before playing relatively well against Michigan. After that he went back and forth from playing like he did a season before, to showing why he was recruited so highly. It wasn’t until a 6 game stretch in late January/Early February that he put it all together to showcase the player he can be.

During that stretch (featuring the February 14th tilt against Duke in which he single-handedly kept the game close in the first half), Gbinije averaged 20.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 4.8 apg, 2.5 spg, only 1.8 turnovers per game, AND he shot 59% from the field overall, along with a staggering 51% from three. For 3 weeks during the meat of the regular season, Michael Gbinije just may have been the best player in College Basketball.

Andy Rautins Signs with Pro Team in Turkey (TNIAAM; Szuba)

After spending last season in Italy, former Syracuse Orange basketball playerAndy Rautins has agreed to play in Turkey this year. Rautins spent last season playing for Cimberio Varese where he averaged 12 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Now, Rautins will head further east to play for Royal Hali Gaziantep in Turkey.

The sharpshooter will join Jawad Williams on the Royal Hazi team. Williams averaged 13.1 points and 4 rebounds per game on North Carolina's 2005 National Championship team.

Rautins has been a world traveler since graduating from Syracuse. The former second-round pick of the New York Knicks has played in Spain, for the Tulsa 66ers of the D-League and in Frankfurt, Germany where he played for the Fraport Skylines.

The erstwhile Syracuse player could be with the Canadian National team next summer for the 2016 Olympics. But should he be available, he'd be a great addition to Boeheim's Army in next year's The Basketball Tournament. See some of Rautins' highlights from Italy below.

ACC Power Ratings: Evaluating Each School's Local Breweries (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Everyone ranks things. But we want to get to the things that really matter. No, not on-field results -- those are far too subjective, and also too depressing for Syracuse fans at times. No, we want to use our unquestionable* authority to rank the OFF-the-field issues that truly matter in the ACC. This will probably happen every week.

*Dispute this at your own risk.

This week's pressing topic:

Evaluating Each School's Local Breweries
You may remember when Aaron and I "drank our way" through the NCAA Tournament back in March, using each school's hyper-local craft brewery (and those respective brewery's best beers) as the evaluation point. It's only fair that now, with football, we use the same criteria and keep things as local as possible. Of course each of the ACC's 14 locations has access to other breweries, and you can and should enjoy those two on your next roadtrip. But if you just want a tasting room experience that requires minimal travel to/from the stadium, this is your list. Ranked one through 14, your top hyper-local beer scenes:

1. Boston College

"These breweries aren't in Chestnut Hill/Newton!" you scream when you see this. And you'd be correct. But you're not going to be staying in either of those places when you visit BC, and Boston is not THAT far off at all. Trust me, it's better this way. The Eagles get to enjoy all that Beantown's happenin' beer scene has to offer, and at the top of that list are the offerings from Trillium Brewing Co. The Double Dry Hopped Congress Street IPA is recommended when you head over, but there are plenty of other delicious (largely pale) ales to enjoy as well. Already been to Trillium? Then you should venture out to Cambridge Brewing Co. (yes, in Cambridge).

2. Syracuse

In the case of Syracuse, you can really stay right within the city to enjoy its best offerings -- even if that means leaving the cozy confines of the Hill and venturing downtown a bit. While the Syracuse Pale Ale is a go-to for local and visiting fans alike -- and why not? -- maybe go for something a little more daring the next time you stop by the brewpub.Middle Ages Brewing Co. also makes several more aggressive beers, including Dragonslayer, a Russian Imperial Stout that hangs out at 9.5 percent ABV. If you've tried out all of their varieties, Empire Brewing Co. can also take care of you just fine.

Which Racing President Stole the Show at the Chiefs Game? (PS; video; Kramer)

A slow and steady course paid off for Teddy Roosevelt at the Racing Presidents contest on Thursday night at NBT Bank Stadium.

Roosevelt won the six-mascot race from the left-field foul pole to just beyond home plate after the fifth inning of the Syracuse Chiefs-Lehigh Valley game, putting the crowd of 7,335 on the edge of its seats.

Onondaga County comptroller Bob Antonacci, the sponsor of the race and owner of his own bobblehead outfit, broke fast from the gate and claimed the quick lead.

But Abraham Lincoln caught Antonacci near third base and seemed headed for the win. Lincoln, however, inexplicably veered off course and failed to make the turn around home plate and curl toward the tape. That allowed Roosevelt to steal first place.

The Presidents also took part in a few between-innings promotions and posed for pictures with fans. A game in which fans tried to toss hula hoops over the mascots' heads proved to be a challenge because the noggins were too big for the hoops to fit around.
